It’s a mystery that took more than 47 years to solve: The true identity of a woman known as Jane Seneca Doe. Jane Seneca Doe artist rendering Courtesy of Carl KoppelmanOn October 2, 1976, the body of a young woman was found murdered and tossed in a ditch along Highway 6 in an unincorporated area of Grundy County, Illinois, near the village of Seneca. After nearly two months of unsuccessful attempts to identify the Jane Doe, she was buried in an unmarked grave at a cemetery in Braceville, Illinois, where she remained until 2018. Margaret Press, who founded the DNA Doe Project in 2017, said Jane Seneca Doe was at the top of her list of cases she wanted to see identified. According to a press release on the Grundy County website, Jane Seneca Doe was identified on June 27, 2024, as a woman named JoAnn 'Vickie' Smith.

Some Democrats bristle at Biden's pardon justificationBy Carol E. Lee, Sarah Fitzpatrick, Gary Grumbach and Dareh GregorianIt’s not just that President Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter. Dozens of people were killed on Sunday in clashes during a soccer match in Guinea, according to media reports. The violence occurred during a game between the Labe and Nzerekore soccer teams in the city of Nzerekore, the second-largest city in the West African nation. Agence France-Presse, citing local hospital sources, said there were “dozens dead,” with one doctor estimating the death toll was closer to “around 100” people. Prime Minister Bah Oury of Guinea condemned the violence in a statement on X on Sunday. “The government deplores the incidents that marred the football match between the Labe and Nzerekore teams this afternoon in Nzerekore,” Mr. Oury said.

It will also be the first time a US president has visited Angola, with which Biden has sought to shore up relations in recent years. As he hosted African leaders in Washington for a 2022 summit, Biden vowed to visit the continent the following year but ultimately missed that deadline. He scheduled a trip to Angola for this October, which was postponed due to a pair of devastating hurricanes hitting the US. The initiative is at the center of the Biden administration’s efforts to boost investment in Africa to blunt China’s growing influence in the region, which has outpaced that of the US. In an interview with The New York Times ahead of Biden’s visit to Angola, Lourenço said he is “ready to work” with Trump in the White House.

They stood on a concrete platform over a cobblestone plaza as slave traders cast their final judgment, gazing westward at a bend in the mighty Cuanza River, where unknown horrors lay ahead. For the ancestors of millions of African Americans, this slave market in Massangano, a village in Angola, was likely the place where they were sold into bondage. It was a point of no return. Historians believe that people from the southern African nation of Angola accounted for one of the largest numbers of enslaved Africans shipped to the United States, including the first to arrive at Point Comfort, Va., in 1619. That history has largely gone unnoticed in Angola and the United States, where many Black Americans often make pilgrimages to Ghana and Senegal in West Africa to trace their ancestors’ treacherous journeys but not to Angola.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump said he would require countries that are part of BRICS — a China- and Russia-backed group of emerging economies — to commit to not creating new currency or face 100% tariffs during his administration. “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER. BRICS had been made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa since 2011. The leader of one member country, Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in 2023 proposed creating a common currency in South America to reduce reliance on the US dollar. Voters in southern Africa this year have delivered blow after blow to parties that helped free their countries from colonialism. And on Wednesday, one of those parties, the South West Africa People’s Organization, or SWAPO, in Namibia is expected to face its toughest electoral test ever. In May, the African National Congress, the party that led the defeat of apartheid in South Africa, lost its absolute majority in Parliament for the first time since democracy took hold in that country 30 years ago. The party was forced to form a governing coalition with rivals. In neighboring Botswana, the Botswana Democratic Party, which had governed since the country became independent 58 years ago, suffered a stunning setback in last month’s national election: It lost the presidency, going from being the largest party in Parliament to the smallest.

Robert W. Dixon Sr., the last known survivor of the U.S. Army’s all-Black regiments known as Buffalo Soldiers, died on Nov. 15 near Albany, N.Y. His wife, Georgia Dixon, said he died at a rehabilitation center. Created after the Civil War, the Army’s all-Black cavalry and infantry regiments were nicknamed “Buffalo Soldiers” by Native Americans who encountered them in the nation’s Western expansion. The name may have been a reference to the soldiers’ curly black hair or to the fierceness that buffalo show in fighting. During the Spanish-American War, the experienced horsemen of the 10th Cavalry led the way for Col. Theodore Roosevelt’s novice Roughriders in fighting in Cuba.

His death was announced by his family, who did not state a cause. “To be an Afrikaner is a political definition,” he wrote in 1985. “It is a blight and a provocation to humanity.”His loathing of apartheid’s institutionalization of white supremacy began in personal experience. When COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev stepped to the podium at the closing meeting of the Baku climate summit on Sunday morning, hoping to clinch a hard-fought agreement on global climate finance, he carried with him two speeches. Expectations for a deal were depressed by worries of a looming U.S. withdrawal from global climate cooperation, geopolitical turmoil, and a rise of isolationist politics that had shunted climate change off much of the world’s top priorities list. An activist holds a globe balloon during a protest at the COP29 United Nations climate change conference, in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Nov. 21.
