Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday left the door open to adjourning Congress so President-elect Donald Trump can appoint his Cabinet nominees outside of the usual Senate confirmation process if necessary. Both chambers usually gavel in for pro forma sessions even during times of recess specifically to prevent the president from making recess appointments and bypassing congressional approval. President Barack Obama once tried to use recess appointments and was rebuked by the Supreme Court, which said in 2014 that recesses needed to be 10 days or longer for recess appointments to be legal. Johnson isn’t the only Trump ally who has left the door open to using a recess appointment to confirm Trump’s Cabinet picks. “I have literally not discussed one word about the ethics report, not once, and I’ve been with him quite a bit this week,” Johnson said.

March 1 (Reuters) - Closing arguments are set to start on Wednesday in the trial of Richard "Alex" Murdaugh, the now-disbarred South Carolina lawyer charged with gunning down his wife and son in a complex and grisly case that has garnered international attention. Newman said he expected the jury would be back in court for closing arguments around 11 a.m. Murdaugh, who has said he had nothing to do with the murders, faces 30 years to life in prison if he is found guilty. In addition to the murders, Murdaugh has been charged with dozens of financial crimes, including an alleged scheme to have himself killed so that his older son, Buster, could collect a $10 million insurance payout. Obviously, this is not a story about Washington, D.C., where Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s unsuccessful — and still ongoing — attempt to become speaker will go down in history. Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is struggling to secure the 218 votes he needs to be elected speaker of the House in January. In this game of chicken, if the conservatives don’t blink and McCarthy refuses to back down, it could result in a chaotic floor fight with House members taking multiple votes for speaker — something that has not happened in a century. The House was called to order at noon and the chamber moved to the first order of business: electing the speaker. The House held three more unsuccessful votes for speaker that day before adjourning just after 2 p.m. The date was Feb. 2, 1856, two months after the first speaker vote.

WASHINGTON — A video filmed by a man charged in connection with the Jan. 6 attack shows rioters inside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office during the insurrection. It was released to the media following a request by NBC News. In the video, rioters can be heard chanting, “Naaaancy, Naaaancy, Naaaancy" as they enter the speaker's suite, where staffers were huddled in a conference room, barricading themselves from the mob. The laptop was already gone by the time Lyons entered the conference room, the video shows. About 900 defendants have been charged in connection with the Capitol attack and more than 440 have pleaded guilty to various charges.
