How the EV era is challenging leading engine maker Honda
  + stars: | 2024-11-22 | by ( Robert Ferris | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Honda is the world's largest engine manufacturer, powering about 27 million cars, motorcycles, generators, yard tools, airplanes, and other items. But it is struggling in some key regions, especially China, and it's challenged by the era of electric vehicles. Honda has been relatively slow to release models, and it has depended heavily on partners to keep up. Honda does have an in-house EV plan and its own platform. It's sinking $65 billion into EVs and software globally, including $11 billion in Canada and $3.5 billion for upgrades to facilities in the United States.

CNN —The U.S. government’s highway safety agency is investigating complaints that engines can fail on as many as 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles. The agency says in documents posted on its website Monday that connecting rod bearings on vehicles with 3.5-liter V6 engines can fail, leading to complete engine failure. Honda recalled about 250,000 vehicles in November of 2023 to fix the same problem. The agency said it’s opening a recall query to determine the severity of the problem in vehicles not included in the 2023 recall. In documents explaining the 2023 recall, the automaker said had 1,450 warranty claims due to the bearing problem but no reports of injuries.

Why Toyota and Honda vehicles have such high resale values

Toyota and Honda have at times been called boring: Honda by its own engineers, Toyota more famously by a chairman descended from the company's founder. But while they may not have the luster of, say, European sports cars, these two Japanese brands have enviably high resale values. Toyota has topped Kelley Blue Book's Best Resale Value list eight times since 2014, including the last four consecutive years. Another key for the automakers is that Toyota and Honda listen carefully to customers and try to build only what they think people will buy. "The market tends to have much greater demand than Toyota supplies up front, which keeps resale high, which keeps consumers happy, and the cycle continues on and on," said Tyson Jominy, vice president of data analytics at J.D.

But a combination of reliability, disciplined production and pricing help them hold their value better than any other brand. The same is true of their luxury divisions Lexus and Acura. CNBC looks at how they got this way and explores what could knock them off the podium.

Some analysts expect Tesla's third-quarter earnings to signal a turning point, while others see more pain ahead. AdvertisementTesla will report third-quarter earnings results after the market close on Wednesday, and Wall Street will be hyper-focused on the company's core auto business. However, some analysts on Wall Street expect the upcoming third-quarter earnings print will be a sign that the worst is behind Tesla. Here's what Wall Street expects from Tesla's upcoming earnings report. But perhaps more important than vehicle deliveries for Wall Street is Tesla's profit margins.

Post Memorial Day, “this presents increased opportunities for vehicle sales, service and, of course, revenue. “We are actively investigating a cyber incident,” CDK spokesperson Lisa Finney said in a statement shared with CNN. To protect customer privacy, customer’s details aren’t written out on a piece of paper that’s just sitting on the desk anymore. Instead, information about deals and customer appointments is kept in a server that’s now impossible for his salespeople to access. But it’s a major hassle in the meantime and could cost his dealerships some business. A statement shared by CDK later in the afternoon said some of the company’s system had been restored to operation but not all of them, yet.

While missing a host of brands, this year's edition of the Los Angeles Auto Show debuted a range of new models. But at least one automaker says it is ramping up its North American EV strategy in 2024: Honda Motor Company. Honda's EV moves come against the backdrop of EV pullbacks from other major auto manufacturers; and in some cases, shelved EV plans altogether. GM itself is playing a key role in the first mass-market EV Honda is introducing, the Prologue. The All-Electric Acura ZDX is displayed during the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show at the Los Angeles Convention Center on November 24, 2023 in Los Angeles, California.

DETROIT (AP) — Honda is recalling more than three quarters of a million vehicles in the U.S. because a faulty sensor may cause the front passenger air bags to inflate when they're not supposed to. Also included are the 2021 and 2022 Civic hatchback, the 2021 Civic Type R and Insight, and the 2020 and 2021 CR-V, CR-V Hybrid, Passport, Ridgeline and Accord Hybrid. Affected models from the Acura luxury brand include the 2020 and 2022 MDX, the 2020 through 2022 RDX and the 2020 and 2021 TLX. Documents posted Tuesday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say that the front passenger seat weight sensor may crack and short circuit, and fail to turn off the air bag as intended. Dealers will replace the seat sensors at no cost to owners.

This recall brings the number of Honda vehicles recalled in 2023 up to more than three million. Honda said owners will be notified by letter in early January, and that dealers will inspect, repair and replace the engines for free. Tesla is offering cars well below September's new car average transaction price of $47,899. Tesla's base Model 3 and Model Y are both less than that. Last month, new cars saw an average transaction price (ATP) of $47,899, according to Kelley Blue Book. New car prices have slowly but surely been improving as of late, but are still pretty costly. The auto research firm JD Power assessed dozens of vehicle brands for its latest quality study. The overall quality of new vehicles is deteriorating and nagging problems are on the rise, according to a new study from JD Power. "The basic touch point of door handles is now a percolating problem area as manufacturers attempt to redesign them," JD Power said. JD Power assigned a score to each auto brand based on problems per 100 vehicles, and calculated an industry average of 192 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), up from 180 in 2022. In terms of vehicles themselves, the Nissan Maxima had the highest initial quality overall, with 106 problems per 100 vehicles, according to the survey.

No one was killed or injured in the early hour blasts in Washington's Northeast neighborhood, but all three places were damaged, police said in a statement. In one of the blasts, someone threw "a Molotov cocktail style object" at a Safeway store before fleeing in a vehicle, police said. The suspect's back was turned to the surveillance camera in that image and the face was not visible. In an editorial column last year, the Washington Post said that the regularity of violence and crime in Washington was "alarming" and posed a "serious problem." Yet the average sticker for base models, adjusted for inflation, has actually gone down a little — even as consumers have shifted from sedans to more expensive SUVs. That’s good news for drivers willing to go no-frills: If you don’t want to pay lots of a new car, you don’t have to. It has a base price of $15,730. These base price models may not make much money, if any, for automakers. The average price of a GMC Sierra 2500 HD, as sold, is now double the base price.
The gap in reliability scores between luxury brands and those for mass market brands such as Kia were the widest in the 34 years that J.D. Power sets Tesla aside from other brands in the rankings because the electric vehicle maker doesn't provide it with full access to information about owners. Other luxury brands fared poorly, too. Infotainment systems complaints, such as problems with wireless Bluetooth phone connections, dragged down scores from vehicle owners of several luxury brands, according to the report. Even as luxury brands compete to offer more advanced digital content and dashboard features, luxury vehicle owners are finding fault with the infotainment systems at about double the rate as owners of mass-market brands, Hanley said.
