Of course, these basic rules of political decorum are ones Donald Trump has rarely followed. He’s been accumulating political capital, and his victory only gives him an opening to accumulate more ... if he chooses to. On some level, I accept the notion that one person’s revenge is another person’s “reform,” so I’m sure Trump could argue he’s appointing reformists. What will ultimately matter is whether these folks can govern like reformers or end up simply as conduits for Trump’s revenge. Here’s the political problem Trump is creating for himself: He’s taking full ownership of the entire bureaucracy now.

CNN —Donald Trump’s increasingly provocative Cabinet picks have left some Republican senators aghast and Washington in shock. The dismay engulfing establishment elites contrasted with the euphoria rocketing through conservative networks and social media among Trump fans. News that Hegseth had been picked to lead the Pentagon rocked Washington the night before the Gaetz pick and sparked similar questions about Trump’s motives. And she was accused of “parroting” false propaganda from America’s premier espionage adversary, Russia, by no less than Utah GOP Sen. Mitt Romney. Not all Trump’s picks are contentious.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been hit with five federal charges – including wire fraud, bribery and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national – according to a sprawling 57-page federal indictment unsealed Thursday. Although the Bentley Suite for two nights would have cost approximately $7,000, Adams paid less than $600, the indictment says. And so, the building opened as requested by a Turkish official who had plied Adams with travel benefits and other gifts, the indictment says. In addition to the free travel and hotel rooms, Adams received illegal campaign contributions from foreign donors, including the Turkish government official, the indictment says. Adams has repeatedly said that his administration is cooperating in the investigations and he's focused on his work as mayor.

This digital ad posted by Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania, about a week before Biden eventually dropped his bid, was the blueprint. Almost immediately, Democrats saw a surge of support — mostly from disillusioned Democratic voters. As of this writing, it’s now Republicans in battleground states and districts who are begging their nominee to change course. As for the GOP, Trump and his allies have done everything they can to mold the GOP in Trump’s image, and anyone who doesn’t share that view has essentially been purged. Of course, the real challenge for both Republicans will be figuring out how to navigate Trump’s appearances in their respective states.

When you think of advocating for yourself in the workplace, you probably imagine asking for a promotion. Part of self-advocacy, though, is learning how to say "no" to tasks you don't have the bandwidth for. In her new book "Smart, Not Loud," Jessica Chen outlines how you can push back against accepting more work, even if you're uncomfortable saying "no." "In the process of always saying yes, we sacrifice our time and take on work that does not really help us," she writes. In her book, she offers up a formula that can help you turn down work in a way that doesn't ruin your workplace relationships.

Student demonstrators occupy the pro-Palestinian "Gaza Solidarity Encampment" on the West Lawn of Columbia University on April 24, 2024 in New York City. The Columbia protesters are also calling for the university to “disclose and sever all ties” with the New York Police Department. For example, Columbia protesters want the university to sever ties with the school’s center in Tel Aviv and a dual degree program with Tel Aviv University. New York University protesters use the school’s Tel Aviv center as a rallying cry as well.

I’ve watched U.S. warplanes attack Afghanistan; barely escaped a direct strike from a Russian MiG in Georgia, and lived for weeks under relentless Israeli bombardment in Lebanon. Israel has so far killed more than 8,000 people, the Gaza Health Ministry said, more than 40 percent of them children. But having spent time under bombardment, and having reported in Gaza, I have no time for these explanations. If we are to believe the Israeli political and military leadership’s own words — and I think we should — the assault on Gaza was driven, first, by straightforward vengeance. We could find out with a cease-fire, but they say we can’t ask for a cease-fire.

Why Did Hamas Attack Israel?
  + stars: | 2023-10-09 | by ( The Conversation | Oct. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +8 min
By Ian ParmeterIn hindsight, the drivers of Hamas’s startlingly well-planned, land-sea-air attack on Israel on Saturday were in plain sight. The operation reflects a pattern of four wars and regular outbreaks of violence between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza since 2005, when Israel withdrew its military posts and forcibly removed 9,000 Israeli settlers from the territory. Each time Hamas has launched rockets at Israel or engaged in similar provocations, it has drawn heavy retaliation from Israel in the form of major bombings on the Gaza Strip. Hamas does not recognize Israel, but has said it would observe a truce if Israel withdrew to its 1967 borders. The significance of a Palestinian entity being able to surprise Israel in the same way would not be lost on Hamas.

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares mostly rose Friday in cautious trading ahead of an update on the U.S. jobs market. U.S. futures and oil prices were little changed. “The sentiment of unease prevails as the market awaits the release of the U.S. employment report later today,” said Anderson Alves at ActivTrades. Market attention also remains on oil prices, which have fluctuated recently and will have major effects on how central banks act on interest rates. On Thursday, Wall Street drifted to a quiet close on worries over inflation and interest rates.

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares mostly rose in cautious trading Friday after Wall Street drifted to a quiet close on worries about a too-hot U.S. job market. Government shutdown would leave the Fed flying blind
  + stars: | 2023-09-18 | by ( Bryan Mena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Washington, DC CNN —In the event of a US government shutdown, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says it will stop releasing data, including key figures on inflation and unemployment. A lack of crucial government data would make it difficult for investors and the Federal Reserve to interpret the US economy. “By the time the Fed discovered its mistake, the effects of excessive monetary tightening could be difficult to reverse,” she said. It’s unclear whether the Fed would hold rates steady in the absence of government data or how it would navigate a government shutdown when deliberating monetary policy. The effects of a government shutdown also depend on how long it lasts, which also isn’t clear at this point.

That estimate from Michigan-based Anderson Economic Group (AEG) includes UPS customer losses of $4 billion and lost direct wages of more than $1 billion. A 15-day UPS strike in 1997 disrupted the supply of goods, cost the world's biggest parcel delivery firm $850 million and sent some customers to rivals like FedEx (FDX.N). Roughly 340,000 union-represented UPS workers handle about a quarter of U.S. parcel deliveries and serve virtually every city and town in the nation. A strike could delay millions of daily deliveries, including Amazon.com (AMZN.O) orders, electronic components and lifesaving prescription drugs, shipping experts warned. The market isn't buying the Fed's tough talk on interest rates
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( Jeff Cox | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
Try as the Federal Reserve did Wednesday to send the message that multiple interest rate hikes are ahead, the market wasn't buying it. Indeed, market pricing reflected a high level of skepticism that the Fed is going to do much more in terms of policy tightening. That came even though 12 of the 18 FOMC members said they envision rate hikes totaling 50 basis points, or 0.5 percentage point, by the end of 2023. "Fed Funds Futures aren't buying to [Wednesday's] FOMC SEP guidance of 2 more rate hikes this year," wrote Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research. The Russian general, however, does not appear to be living up to those expectations. Alexander DvornikovWhen Russia first launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in late-February 2022, it relied on district commanders rather than overall commander of the war effort. Sergey SurovikinIn early October, Putin appointed Army Gen. Sergey Surovikin, nicknamed "General Armageddon," to be the overall theater commander. "Putin likely viewed Surovikin as the last untarnished high-ranking commander in Ukraine he could appoint to overall theater command," the think tank said. As 2023 rolled around, and Russian forces continued to suffer heavy losses in eastern Ukraine, Putin seemingly gave in to Gerasimov's campaigning.
