AdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Jen Lew, a 44-year-old business operations director based in San Francisco, about her career journey. I didn't know what to major in, so I figured I'd start with a more cost-effective community college and transfer to a state college in two years. Now, I'm a business operations director at LinkedIn without an MBA or Ivy League education. I didn't know what I wanted to do and was willing to take any job. After about two years in product management, LinkedIn contacted me directly about their global ad operations job.

This month, he'll start building a long-short equity division called Longaeva Partners inside Balyasny and exclusively managing the multistrategy hedge fund's capital, according to people familiar with the matter. "He was very coachable and progressed at a much faster rate than a lot of other, newer portfolio managers," Boyle said. "Peter was good at keeping his emotions out of his portfolio," Boyle said. At Balyasny, Goodwin will effectively have his own unit, though he'll be under the flagship Atlas Enhanced umbrella and operate on BAM's platform, including access to its technology, risk management, hiring, and human resources capabilities. The allure of such a setup is more time to spend on investing, which Longaeva will do exclusively with Balyasny money for now.

Mr. Shah led a buyout of Ziff Davis, a century-old magazine publisher whose titles chronicled the early tech boom, in 2010. The company was then acquired by J2 Global, which Mr. Shah eventually split into two pieces. One company, Ziff Davis, kept well-known publishing brands like Mashable, and the other kept a fax provider called eFax. But Mr. Shah said that he believed additional deals like the one for CNET would increase its profits. Mr. Shah said he decided to acquire CNET partly because it is well-known industry brand, and its sizable audience will give Ziff Davis greater clout with advertisers looking to reach tech consumers.

Montaque cofounded Group Black in 2021 with the goal of directing $500 million in advertising money to Black-owned media in its first 18 months. With the pledge, Group Black laid out a plan to steer money to Black media owners and acquire media companies. Bough, Group Black's chief strategy officer, was a former Mondelēz and PepsiCo marketer who presented the CNBC reality show "Cleveland Hustles." Various outlets reported that Group Black mounted bids for media companies including the Sports Illustrated publisher Arena Group, the Paramount-owned BET, Vice Media, and Vox Media. Seven former employees described Montaque as an energetic leader but said he was ultimately ineffective in executing Group Black's mission.

Daniel C. Lynch, a computer network engineer whose exhibitions on networking equipment helped accelerate the commercialization of the internet in the 1980s and ’90s, died on Saturday at his home in St. Helena, Calif. His death was confirmed by his daughter Julie Lynch-Sasson, who said he had been suffering from kidney failure. In the mid-1980s, when the internet was still the domain of academia and the government, Mr. Lynch was a computer facility manager who played a key role in the early years of data networking. Although the internet was very small and restricted to noncommercial use, Mr. Lynch was convinced of its ultimate commercial potential. Image Daniel C. Lynch in an undated photograph.

Small-cap stocks could finally break out above their large-cap peers in 2024, according to Goldman Sachs portfolio strategists. Small caps lagged large caps by a wide margin in 2023, with the Russell 2000 climbing about 15% compared to a 24% gain for the S & P 500. Snider ties the optimistic outlook for small-cap stocks to Goldman's macroeconomic outlook for the coming year, which anticipates 2% growth in U.S. gross domestic product. The forecast 15% return for the Russell 2000 this year also matches the index's historical median return of 16% during presidential election years going back to 1984, Goldman argued. A coterie of high-profile investors, including Bill Ackman of Pershing Square, Boaz Weinstein of Saba Capital Management and Marc Lasry of Avenue Capital Group, is pushing to buy Sculptor Capital, the successor to the storied hedge fund Och-Ziff — even though the fund has already agreed to sell itself to another investment firm. On Thursday, they gained an important supporter. That deal would value the firm’s class A shares at $11.15, around 18 percent more than they were worth the day it was announced. But shares of the hedge fund have fallen significantly over a longer period, dropping 60 percent over the past two years. The consortium’s most recent offer for Sculptor, disclosed on Wednesday, would value it at about $12.76 for each of its class A shares.

Havana, Cuba CNN —As a series of welcoming cannon blasts rang out from a nearby colonial fort, the Russian navy’s training class ship Perekop sailed into Havana on Tuesday. “We are condemning, we are rejecting, the expansion of NATO towards Russia’s borders,” Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel told Russian-controlled network, RT, in a rare interview in May. He also blasted US economic sanctions on Russia, while heralding Russian “projects of cooperation and collaboration” under development in Cuba. But following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba lost its main trading partner and entered a deep economic depression. Despite the high cost of the war in Ukraine and economic sanctions, Russian officials say they are committed to Cuba.

HAVANA, June 10 (Reuters) - When the U.S. embassy in Havana reopened last May to Cubans seeking visas after a nearly five-year hiatus, the once proud 1950s vintage building was in shambles. The State Department imported high-grade stainless steel for its fencing, and granite from a quarry in Vermont for the building's new facade. A view of the U.S. Embassy beside the Anti-Imperialist stage in Havana, Cuba, May 24, 2023. CASTRO THREATENED TO SEIZE BUILDINGUnder former leader Fidel Castro, the jabs and antagonism often went both ways between Cuba and the embassy. U.S. intelligence investigations have since determined it "very unlikely" a foreign adversary was responsible for the illness, and a more robust staff and agenda have returned to Havana, Ziff said.

Miramax at the time was owned by Walt Disney Co (DIS.N), which sold the movie studio to an investment group in 2010. The lawsuit names Weinstein, Miramax and Disney as defendants, claiming they were aware that Lombardo was a "danger to women whom he encountered at work," but did nothing to prevent him from victimizing her. According to Ziff's lawsuit, Lombardo and Weinstein were "very close" and Weinstein was best man at Lombardo's 2003 wedding. Imran Ansari, a lawyer for Weinstein, said in an email on Friday that Weinstein had no knowledge of or control over Lombardo's conduct. Ziff is accusing Lombardo of sexual battery and gender-motivated violence, and accuses Weinstein and the companies of negligent supervision.
[1/3] Cuban entrepreneurs Maria Puga and Ana Torres pose for a photo at their atelier in Havana, Cuba, April 3, 2023. "Cuba's state-run economy has traditionally not delivered, and recently has delivered even less," Ziff said in an interview. The United States, which says it operates "transparently" in Cuba, is not alone in seeking to promote Cuba's fledgling private sector. Diplomat Ziff said the United States was seeking ways to ease the burden of U.S. sanctions on private business but in a way that would not inadvertently benefit the Cuban government. "The biggest impediment to doing business in Cuba is the Cuban government," Ziff said.

HONG KONG, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Asia's hedge funds are heading for their worst showing in a dozen years, with long-short stockpickers wrongfooted by volatility in China, while macro strategy funds riding big global shifts in interest rates shine. On average, Asian hedge funds fared better than the indexes, losing 9.1% through to end-November, Eurekahedge data showed. By strategy, Asia equity long-short funds lost 12% and Greater China long-short funds lost 14%, while Asia macro funds rose 12% and Asia multi-strategy rose 1%. Big picture macro funds, which trade on economic and political shifts, also performed well, as U.S.-China tension and rising interest rates roiled financial markets. Long positions in U.S. government debt and the Singapore dollar also helped through November when many macro managers were caught out by a sudden drop in the U.S. dollar.
