Greek organizations tend to be the domain of colleges, with students pledging and developing life-long connections in fraternities and sororities. But Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign is thrusting Black Greek organizations into the political sphere. She is the first presidential nominee to come from a Divine Nine Greek organization, so would be the first president from the Black Greek system if elected. That means Harris has ready access to the Divine Nine’s more than 2 million members — including activists, community leaders, philanthropists and more — and what could be a potentially powerful voting and mobilization bloc. Last week, Kiahna W. Davis, a regional director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc., formed an AKA political action committee to support Harris.

I have not been the biggest fan of Kamala Harris, but to my surprise, the candidate who underwhelmed in 2020 is gone. What I took away: Kamala Harris is a different candidate than we saw four years ago. That is hard for any candidate but it is an almost impossible tightrope for a Black female candidate to walk. Americans crave the performance of authenticity as a sign that our values are in safe hands — hands just like ours. Political candidates have to negotiate ideas about identity with an audience’s expectations of who should be in power.

Thousands of Black women organizers across the country are mapping out voter registration efforts and planning conference calls, campaign events and fundraisers. Harris herself has been working to reach Black women voters with stops at Black sorority conventions in recent weeks. “These are Black women values.”Harris is an alumna of Howard University, a historically Black institution. Eaddy said Black women are expecting this form of “dog whistle politics” and are prepared to defend Harris. She said she expects Black women will have a significant impact on voter turnout in November.

Here’s where Harris stands on key issues

CNN —A week after announcing her run for president, Kamala Harris has yet to tell voters how she will address the key issues facing the nation. Harris has also touted the Biden administration’s efforts to lower drug costs, reduce child poverty, forgive student loan debt and remove medical debt from credit reports. Hefty student debt loads are also an area of interest to Harris. Experts credit Harris’ ability to secure private-sector investments as her most visible action in the region to date but have cautioned about the long-term durability of those investments. For President Biden and me, our sacred commitment to NATO remains ironclad.

CNN —The five days since Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign launched at warp speed have remade the 2024 race – and given Democrats new hope of preventing a second Donald Trump presidency. Fundraising exploded, with Harris’ campaign saying she raised $126 million between Sunday afternoon and Tuesday evening. And Democrats were more eager to devote their own time to working to elect Harris: More than 100,000 people signed up to volunteer for her bid, and more than 2,000 applied for campaign jobs, Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a Wednesday memo. The strength of Harris’ launch has at times surprised even the former Biden campaign staffers who on Sunday suddenly found themselves working for what was converted into the Harris campaign. Biden’s campaign believed his path to 270 Electoral College votes ran through the “blue wall” states – Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

That is a strategic political calculation, because she knew — and her people knew — that you will not reach the White House if you frolic with war criminals." Kent Nishimura/Getty ImagesThe California Democrat argued that Harris should look toward the example of Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Advertisement'A very tenuous feeling'If Netanyahu's speech on Wednesday was any indication, there's plenty of wiggle room for Harris to pursue a less deferential approach to Israel than Biden. Dozens of progressives issued statements affirming that they were boycotting the speech, engaged in other events, or like Harris, simply came up with convenient scheduling conflicts. He's literally the Trump of Israel," Rep. Maxwell Frost of Florida told me.

She is scheduled to speak at a convention of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., one of the nation’s oldest Black sororities, and would meet with Mr. Netanyahu this week at the White House, the aide said. Senator Patty Murray, Democrat of Washington and the president pro tempore, who is third in line to the presidency, also was asked to preside in Ms. Harris’s stead but declined. Ms. Murray is not planning to attend the speech at all, a spokesman said. Other Democrats have said they plan to boycott the speech in protest of Mr. Netanyahu’s policies and Israel’s conduct of the war. Mr. Netanyahu was invited to address Congress by leaders from both parties.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris declined to preside over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress on Wednesday, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. Harris’ aide cited a previously scheduled event as the reason for missing the speech Wednesday. A date for the Netanyahu-Harris meeting has not been announced, but it will be separate from President Joe Biden’s planned meeting with the Israeli prime minister. The closely watched bilateral will mark Harris’ first meeting with a world leader since Biden stepped aside from his reelection campaign and endorsed Harris’ candidacy. Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray, a Washington state Democrat, also declined to preside, according to a spokesperson.
