The latest one: Coffee badging. Better yet, take steps to make coffee badging unnecessary in the first place. My encouragement to any employer who notices coffee badging happening:Explore the purpose of the expectation. If you notice coffee badging happening in your business, talk to your people. Job postings that claim to offer a "competitive salary" are on the rise, putting more onus on job seekers to suss out how much money they can expect from a new role. If you're at the start of a hiring process without pay clarity, there may be early indications that the promise of a "competitive salary" is an empty one. Here are some red flags to watch out for in your conversations with recruiters and hiring managers. But if the company continues to evade the pay conversation after multiple interviews, that's a clear red flag, according to Hyman. Why don't you take some time to digest it and circle back once you have established [the compensation] level?'"

Pay transparency laws are on the rise nationwide, but so is the share of companies that use the ambiguous phrase "competitive salary" to describe what they'll pay. As of May, the phrase appeared in 3% of U.S. job postings on Indeed, up from 2.5% of postings at the same time last year, the employment website told CNBC Make It. It's a small but notable increase that reflects thousands of job posts with unclear pay ranges, according to Indeed. "But without further details in the job posting, the phrase puts the onus on the job seeker to know what a competitive pay range may look like." If you're applying to jobs without clear pay ranges, here are a few ways to discuss salary during the hiring process.

They can now add AI recruiting systems to that pile. It turns hiring into a depersonalized process, it inundates hiring managers, and it reinforces weaknesses in the system it's designed to improve. AI is supposed to fix this mess, saving companies time and money by outsourcing even more of the hiring process to machine-learning algorithms. Platforms like LinkedIn and ZipRecruiter have started using generative AI to offer candidates personalized job recommendations and let recruiters generate listings in seconds. Several seasoned recruiters told me they hadn't incorporated AI into their workflow beyond auto-generating job descriptions and summarizing candidate calls.

65% of startups on Kruze Consulting's platform are paying for OpenAI, up from just 3% when the chatbot launched in late 2022. At fintech unicorn CloudWalk, which is building a payments network, a few engineers started using ChatGPT Plus on their own and praising the application on company Slack channels. Indeed, the growing adoption of ChatGPT is creating demand for engineers who are especially savvy at using generative AI to get work done more quickly. "The feedback we got, which is indirectly related to our using AI, is that investors didn't understand how our team has so many clients and has built so much," Siegal said.

I've been in recruiting for nearly 10 years and a hiring manager for even longer, working in education, non-profits, and tech. When interviewing with a hiring manager as a candidate, my advice is always to be very discerning about what you share. Challenges in previous jobs or with your job searchIn an interview, the hiring manager is looking for someone who makes them confident they can deliver strong results for the company. Some things I've heard job seekers share before — like challenges in previous workplaces or how tough the market is — can distract the hiring manager from seeing them as the strongest candidate. Was their previous manager really difficult to work with, or are they the difficult one?

I’ll use Open AI’s ChatGPT for this example with web browsing turned on in the settings, since the book is fairly new. Then try this prompt, which I adapted from PromptHero, a database of ChatGPT prompts that have helped people:I want you to act as a life coach. On Month 1, for example, the chatbot might advise you to start with four 30-minute walks a week just to get accustomed to physical activity. On ChatGPT, using a plug-in automation tool called Zapier, you can connect the chatbot with your Google Calendar and ask it to automatically integrate these workout recommendations into your calendar for you. (Currently only subscribers who pay $20 a month for ChatGPT Plus can use plug-ins.

Don't seek out an investor, says billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban. Cuban — who is, notably, an investor on ABC's "Shark Tank" — launched his first tech company, a computer systems startup called MicroSolutions, using his own money. In 1994, Cuban and his friend Todd Wagner invested $10,000 in a small startup called Cameron Audio Networks. For college students looking to earn extra money — perhaps to offset rising costs during their undergraduate years — side hustles can provide an added source of income. College students, specifically, are turning to side hustles due to their general flexibility, M'Chelle Ryan, director of Upwork Academy, tells CNBC Make It. Ryan and Frana both shared their thoughts on the best side hustles for current college students. This side hustle option could be a fit for college students pursuing degrees in communications, English or journalism. Virtual assistant salaries vary, but the position is remote and may allow college students to work while enrolled in classes.
If you are considering starting a side hustle, along with figuring out how much time you'll be spending on it, you'll need to figure out when in the day you can squeeze it in. Here are four side hustles you can do any time of day. You can also look for contract marketing gigs on sites like Freelancer.com, MarketerHire, LinkedIn and Monster. You can also find gigs on job search sites like Indeed or create a profile on sites like ServiceScape. You could also make a profile on Upwork or try looking for open gigs on sites like Behance or the aforementioned job search engines.
Now, Gen Z is getting in on the action. Two thirds, 59% of Gen Zers say they currently have a side hustle, according to a May 2022 Zapier survey of 2,032 adults. You could try some affiliate marketing on your social media channels, for example, deliver food or do some secret shopping. "You've got more time, probably, you've got the ability to live unconventionally because you're probably by yourself." Here are four side hustles for Gen Z to consider. "Maybe you're really great at Excel, or you're great at Google Docs, or you're great at Photoshop or you're really, really good at organization," says Glantz. "Now, the big growth really is with professional platforms where people can earn six-figure incomes from home, doing everything from marketing to law." So is your hustle something you should disclose to your full-time employer? Side hustle expert Daniella Flores, who uses they/them pronouns, has seen bosses react in multiple ways. At first, their employer was fine with the hustle, but eventually, they gave Flores an ultimatum, asking them, "Would you rather paint or would you rather code?" Whatever you do, though, Flores says, remember not to use company equipment or company time for your hustle. Make sure "you're doing it on your own laptop, on your own time, not onsite at work," says Flores.
Side hustles continue to be a popular way for Americans to make some extra cash. Nearly half, 40% of Americans currently have a side hustle, according to a May 2022 Zapier survey of 2,032 U.S. adults. If you're considering picking one up yourself, and 2023 will be your year to start, some gigs may offer more opportunity than others, say experts. "I would classify an entire group of burgeoning side hustles as the 'pandemic hangover side hustles,'" says Angelique Rewers, founder of BoldHaus, a consulting firm that helps small businesses find corporate clients. "They post freelancing gigs for video editing, copywriting, writing, marketing, basically anything that's digital marketing related," they say.
Joshua Siegel cofounded Titan Casket, a direct-to-consumer casket seller. It sold a casket to a production company, which Taylor Swift used in her new video for "Anti-Hero." When Scott described the industry structure to me, I immediately saw the opportunity to create a direct-to-consumer business selling caskets. Liz and Scott ran the business full-time, and we brought on an intern from the University of North Carolina for the summer of 2020. Because funeral caskets don't constitute a highly competitive space, we could book Google Ads without much competition.
