Gucci had a challenging third quarter partly due to its Asia Pacific slump, per Kering's latest earnings call. AdvertisementGucci just had a bad quarter, and Kering is attributing the lackluster performance to a slump in its Asia Pacific market. According to a third-quarter revenue infographic by Kering, sales in the Asia Pacific region were down 38% compared to the previous year. According to Kering, Gucci saw a 7% increase in sales in Japan in the third quarter compared to the start of 2024. Zara's website is often ridiculed for being confusing. This helps Zara target aspirational shoppers who can't afford to splurge on high fashion. Luxury giants such as LVMH and Kering have seen sales slow in recent months, in part because aspirational shoppers are being squeezed. Zara stores have a minimalist look. It's reminiscent of the experience of browsing luxury brands online, she says, where customers looking to add a ready-to-wear item to their basket often have to find a boutique where the product is available first.

Fashion designer Hedi Slimane leaves LVMH’s Celine

Paris, France Reuters —Fashion designer Hedi Slimane has left LVMH’s Celine brand, the company said on Wednesday, marking the latest high-profile departure from a fashion label as the industry grapples with a sales downturn. Rider, who will start his new job early next year, worked alongside former Celine designer Phoebe Philo at Celine for over a decade. Solca said Slimane had done well at the label, likely more than doubling brand revenue to around €2.5 billion ($2.76 billion). Slimane joined Celine in 2018, quickly making his mark at the historic fashion house with his distinctive rocker-chic aesthetic. In January, at LVMH’s annual results presentation, Arnault said that Celine was enjoying “great success” thanks to Slimane, and topping €2 billion in sales.

Chinese consumers are opting for affordable alternatives across various categories to save money. The trend, known as pingti, is driven by economic challenges and is popular among young people. Consumers are finding cheaper substitutes for luxury goods, everyday items, and even healthcare. It's now become a trend in China to save on nearly every consumer category, from luxury goods to everyday consumables to travel, with cheaper substitutes. A Bank of America survey of 1,052 adult Chinese consumers showed weakening consumer sentiment, with 30% of respondents planning to spend more — down from 45% in June.

Shares in Gucci-owner Kering fell on Thursday, after the luxury group announced a sharp decline in revenue in the first half of the year and issued a weak forecast for the remaining six months of the year. Kering shares dropped as much as 9% as markets opened, trading around levels last seen in August 2017. "There was a marked deceleration in China, while trends did not improve greatly in North America and Europe," Kering added. Gucci posted the worst first-half performance of these brands, with revenue shedding 18% on a comparable basis. Kering is the latest in a series of luxury brands to log declines, with the world's largest luxury group LVMH reporting lower-than-expected sales earlier this week.

It also reflects that there's money in the system — but Chinese consumers are just really not that keen on dropping their hard-earned cash at Starbucks or Gucci. China's demand for gold jewelry softened in the first quarter of this year due to the surge in gold prices but was still holding up well, according to the council. Gen Z Chinese consumers ditch luxury for goldUnlike the rush into gold assets, Chinese consumers are not running out to buy even more stuff, particularly foreign imports. China's savings rate was around 32% last year — compared to around 4% in the US, according to a McKinsey analysis of official data. On a recent trip to Sephora, 11-year-old Lincoln Rivera asked his mom for a $125 atomizer of Yves Saint Laurent eau de parfum. He also covets scents from Jean Paul Gaultier, which he learned about from the animated movie “Megamind,” and Paco Rabanne (some of its cologne bottles are shaped like robots). “I feel fine about how I smell,” said Lincoln, a fifth grader in Westchester County, N.Y., whose olfactory experimentation has so far been limited to deodorant. “But I could smell even better.”Abby Rivera, Lincoln’s mother, first thought the designer scents sounded like overkill for her son to wear to elementary school. She was surprised by his sudden interest until she heard that some of his hockey teammates had also been asking their parents for high-end cologne, too.

That’s all I could think when yet another Saint Laurent model appeared wearing what was essentially a nylon stocking transformed into a dress. Of the 48 looks teetering out on needle-sharp stilettos in the Saint Laurent show, only 12 didn’t have breasts front and center (and of those 12, three were minidresses with their own built-in garter belts to attach to the stockings below). Forget about the practicality of making a pantyhose dress, or the question of who would want to wear it in the first place. Maybe at one point, when Yves Saint Laurent was first pushing boundaries and making a sheer blouse back in 1966, so much visible skin was a shocking, subversive thing in public or on a fashion runway. Maybe in the beginning it was empowering: an escape from the prison of old mores and outdated gender rules.

Gucci staff strike over plans to relocate to Milan

CNN —Dozens of employees at Italian fashion house Gucci staged a strike on Monday to protest the company’s decision to move its design office from Rome to Milan. CGIL has argued that asking staff to move to Milan, approximately 300 miles north of the capital, in the first half of 2024 was tantamount to laying them off. Alessandro Garofalo/ReutersFollowing the departure of creative director Alessandro Michele in 2022, Gucci owner Kering shook up the label’s top management. While sales of luxury goods were on a tear earlier in the year, the market cooled in the second half of 2023. The designer gave the old Gucci codes a refresh sending babydoll dresses, tailored short suits, fringed skirts, hoodies and bejeweled knitwear down the runway.
