A tropical disturbance in the Caribbean is likely to become a hurricane as it passes over Cuba and into the Gulf of Mexico by midweek, federal forecasters said Sunday. The Air's Force 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, using Super Hercules fixed-wing aircraft, got a close look Sunday, the hurricane center said in an afternoon forecast discussion. Still, the upward movement of warm air and precipitation wasn't intense enough to call the disturbance a tropical depression, the hurricane center said. At 39 mph it becomes a tropical storm, which could happen early Tuesday, according to hurricane center forecasts. Storm threatsIn the meantime, the hurricane center said, hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours on the Cayman Islands.

Aug 27 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Idalia has formed near the Yucatan Channel about 80 miles (130 km) east-northeast of Cozumel in Mexico and is heading toward Florida, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Sunday. The storm, which strengthened from a tropical depression, has sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph) and could become a hurricane over the eastern Gulf of Mexico by Tuesday, NHC said. "Observations from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that Tropical Depression Ten has strengthened into Tropical Storm Idalia," the Miami-based weather forecaster said. Aug 27 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Idalia could strengthen into a hurricane on Monday, bringing high winds and storm surges to Cuba and Florida later this week. The storm has sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph) and could reach Category 2 strength with sustained winds of 96 to 110 mph when it is forecast to make landfall in Florida on Wednesday, according to Governor Ron DeSantis. The governor said the hurricane could make landfall in northern Florida's Big Bend area - where the panhandle transitions into the peninsula. CNN —A hurricane watch has been issued for portions of Florida’s Gulf Coast as the state braces for Tropical Storm Idalia, which is expected to strengthen to a hurricane and make landfall this week. The hurricane watch stretches from Englewood to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay, according to the National Hurricane Center’s Sunday afternoon update. In addition to the hurricane watch, a tropical storm watch has been issued for the Gulf Coast of Florida from Englewood to Chokoloskee and the Dry Tortugas. Idalia is forecast to drop 3 to 6 inches of rain on western Cuba, Florida’s west coast, the Panhandle and southern Georgia, with isolated totals of 10 inches, the hurricane center said. Anyone living in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Cuba, and the northern Gulf and Florida coast should monitor the forecast in the coming days.
