SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras — Tropical Storm Sara made landfall in northern Honduras late Thursday and threatened to dump torrential rains across parts of Central America and southern Mexico. Sara hit land about 105 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Gracias a Dios on the Honduras-Nicaragua border, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. The center said that along the way Sara was forecast to drop 10 to 20 inches of rain, even up to 30 inches in isolated areas. Sara was forecast to pass over or very near the tourist destination of Roatan off Honduras’ coast on Sunday. The storm was then expected to turn northwesterly toward Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula.

CNN —Tropical Storm Sara is here and closing in on Central America where it will unleash disastrous flooding rain in the region. The storm will bring “life-threatening” flooding rainfall up to 30 inches to Honduras and double-digit rainfall totals to other parts of Central America, the NHC warned. This scenario would bring strong winds and torrential rain to Central America, but could keep the storm away from the US entirely or have it approach as a very weak storm. It would still unleash life-threatening flooding rainfall in Central America and head for dangerous strike on Belize and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. This would bring more substantial impacts to Central America, the Yucatán and Belize and a much more troubling forecast for the US.

CNN —Halloween may be over, but hurricane season still has a few unsettling tricks left in its final month. Three tropical trouble spots bear watching in the Atlantic basin in the coming days as a strange hurricane season continues to defy expectations. CNN WeatherThe US Gulf Coast could finally have some atmospheric protection on its side after multiple devastating hurricane strikes this season. This season is above average in terms of named storms, hurricanes and major – Category 3 or stronger – hurricanes. Hurricane season officially ends on November 30, but tropical systems aren’t bound by that date.

The Summary Hurricane Milton intensified at one of the fastest rates in recorded history. At nearly every turn, Hurricane Milton has offered surprises. Milton is the strongest Gulf of Mexico hurricane since Hurricane Rita in 2005. However, Lin said, “that doesn’t make it any less dangerous.”Even with slower winds, Milton is expected to remain a major hurricane until landfall Wednesday night. “That would tie 2024 with 2005 and 2020 for 2nd most Gulf hurricane landfalls on record, trailing only 1886,” meteorologist Philip Klotzbach wrote on X.

Tropical Storm Milton rapidly intensified into a Category 1 hurricane Sunday with its path aimed at Florida, less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene made landfall in the state. The storm debuted as a hurricane Monday afternoon after producing sustained winds of 80 mph and continued to strengthen by drawing fuel from the Gulf of Mexico's sultry waters. Forecasters said Milton was likely to reach major hurricane status, denoting a Category 3, 4, or 5 storm Monday. It was pushing out maximum sustained winds estimated to be 80 mph, with some higher gusts, the hurricane center said, and moving east at 6 mph. Researchers have now used DNA analysis to uncover just how long ants have been farming fungi, now described in a study published Thursday in the journal Science. To trace the evolution of this relationship between ants and fungi, Schultz and his colleagues built complex family trees. Using the DNA from 475 species of fungi, including 288 species known to be cultivated by ants, the researchers pieced together how all these organisms are related. The study team did the same thing for 276 species of ants, including 208 species of fungus farmers. Ants began farming fungi 66 million years ago after an asteroid hit Earth, according to a new study.

Hurricane Helene’s massive wind field was wide enough to stretch from Indianapolis to Washington, DC, and its huge size will result in higher storm surge and dangerous winds that stretch well inland. The storm is already lashing Florida as it continues to intensify and track north toward the Florida’s Big Bend. The hurricane unleashed its fury on parts of Mexico’s Yucátan Peninsula and Cuba Wednesday. Flooding rainfall plunged cars underwater in parts of Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo while powerful ocean waves pounded the coastline. Helene’s strong winds also knocked out power to more than 50,000 people in western Cuba’s province of Pinar del Río.

Hurricane warnings were issued Tuesday for a wide stretch of Florida’s Gulf Coast ahead of Tropical Storm Helene’s anticipated landfall as a major hurricane later this week, forecasters said. Officials in Mexico also issued hurricane warnings for a large section of the Yucatan Peninsula, stretching from the tourist hotspot of Tulum to Cabo Catoche, on the peninsula’s northern tip, the National Hurricane Center said in an afternoon advisory. The storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane on Wednesday as it moves across the eastern Gulf of Mexico before becoming a major storm Thursday, according to the advisory. Helene's storm surge is expected to raise water levels in Tampa Bay by as much as 8 feet. Helene's large size will likely mean the storm's hazards will hit an extensive area, the advisory says.
