Regenvanu said there was an urgent need for a response to climate change that was rooted in international law rather than politics. Mario Tama / Getty Images filesWhile advisory opinions from the International Court of Justice or World Court are not binding, they are legally and politically significant. Experts say the court’s eventual opinion on climate change will probably be cited in climate change-driven lawsuits in courts from Europe to Latin America and beyond. “As judges of the World Court, you possess the power ... to help us course correct and renew hope in humanity’s ability to address the greatest challenge of our time,” she said. Earlier on Monday, Germany also argued that the obligations of states with regard to climate change were established in the Paris climate agreement.

The case could have wide-reaching implications for transgender youth living in states that have passed similar laws. After the first gender-affirming care ban for minors became law in 2021, a flurry of states passed similar measures. While 19 states passed laws banning gender-affirming care for minors last year, 11 states and the District of Columbia passed “shield” laws protecting access to care. So far this year, Ohio, Wyoming, South Carolina and New Hampshire joined the list of states banning gender-affirming care for transgender youth. Not all laws banning gender-affirming care are currently being enforced.

“Y.M.C.A.” singer and co-writer Victor Willis of the band Village People defended President-elect Donald Trump’s use of the song Monday on Facebook. Willis denied that the disco tune was intended as a “gay anthem,” saying he “knew nothing about the Y being a hang out for gays” when he wrote the lyrics. Willis said he wrote “Y.M.C.A.” based on what he knew about the worldwide youth organization at the time, particularly the YMCA branches in the urban areas of San Francisco. Willis said he has received more than 1,000 complaints about the use of “Y.M.C.A” at Trump’s campaign rallies. Data suggests the staple campaign moment drove the song up the charts, with search interest and listenership soaring on Election Day.

Oxford University Press announced Monday that “brain rot” — the catch-all term for bizarre and semi-unintelligible extremely online language — is its 2024 word of the year. "These communities have amplified the expression through social media channels, the very place said to cause 'brain rot,'" Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl said in a statement. Between 2023 and 2024, the term “brain rot” increased in usage frequency by 230%, according to Oxford University Press. The term is often used in "a humorous or self-deprecating manner by online communities," Oxford University Press said. Just as it has in years past, Oxford University Press said it again enlisted the public’s help in choosing its word.

Lonely deaths in South Korea increased from 3,378 in 2021 to 3,661 in 2023, per the South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare's data. "'Seoul Without Loneliness' is a bold challenge for the city and not an easy path to take," the representative said. TikTok is defending itself in federal court over legislation President Joe Biden signed in April that would ban TikTok if it doesn’t sell itself to an American owner by the time Trump takes office. Most Trump allies who oppose TikTok have cited claims of Chinese government influence over American users, which TikTok denies. They have both publicly criticized the legislation that would force a sale of TikTok or lead to a U.S. ban. “Don’t be fooled — the TikTok ban is not about China harvesting your data. The Supreme Court will consider a law restricting transition-related health care for minors for the first time Wednesday, and legal experts say the court’s decision could affect access to transition-related care nationwide for both minors and adults for decades to come. The Supreme Court granted the Biden administration’s appeal of a 6th U.S. The court won’t consider the part of the law that bans surgery, which wasn’t covered by the lower court’s injunction. The ACLU and Lambda Legal noted in their petition to the Supreme Court that circuit courts have become split on the restrictions. Many families with trans kids have had to work around care restrictions to continue care for their children.

In 2018, the state raised the legal age to buy tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, and e-cigarettes, to 21. Nearby Massachusetts towns, such as Malden, Melrose, Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield, and Winchester, followed Brookline's playbook and also placed generational bans on tobacco products. In the US, California is trying to ban the purchase of tobacco products by 2073. New Zealand was the first country to impose a generational ban, but the country repealed that ban this year. "This bill will not take away the right to purchase nicotine and tobacco products from anyone who is already legally able to do so," he said.

Indigenous researchers are up against a ticking clock: Of the 4,000 Indigenous languages worldwide, one dies every two weeks with its last speaker. He leads First Languages AI Reality, an initiative of the Mila-Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, where researchers are building speech recognition models for over 200 endangered Indigenous languages in North America. However, first, he must overcome a major roadblock: There aren’t enough Indigenous computer scientist graduates — people who know the language and culture — to tackle these language preservation projects. “We only graduate one or two Indigenous Ph.D.s in AI and computer science every year,” he said. That’s where the handful of Indigenous engineers who do exist come in: They are leading organizations like First Languages AI Reality, IndigiGenius, Tech Natives and the Wihanble S’a Center for Indigenous AI to train Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian computer science students to preserve Indigenous culture and language.

5 big questions about how tech will look under Trump

He sought to swat down legal protections for tech platforms. Many Republicans are eager to see the Trump administration address what they see as “censorship” of right-leaning voices by many mainstream social media platforms. That could mean reforming or reinterpreting Section 230, which shields tech platforms from liability for their users’ posts and allows the platforms to moderate content as they see fit. In essence, Carr could attempt to pass a rule that would make it possible to sue tech platforms under that new interpretation. Ultimately, that could mean hamstringing tech companies’ efforts to reduce hateful or false content on their platforms.

Mike DeWine signed a bill Wednesday banning transgender students from using school restrooms that align with their gender identities. The bill also mandates that Ohio schools cannot have restrooms or locker rooms that are open to all genders, excluding family facilities or single-occupancy facilities. Instead, it will make trans people less safe and fail to increase the safety of all students,” Antonio wrote. Ohio House Republicans attached the legislation about restrooms to proposals regarding report card data for Ohio’s college credit program for high school students. “Extremist politicians are panicking because transgender students exist," Willingham-Jaggers said.

The planned law would force social media platforms to take reasonable steps to ensure age-verification protections are in place. The ban was first announced during an emotionally charged parliamentary inquiry into social media, which included testimony from parents of children who had self-harmed due to cyberbullying. “I understand that using social media a lot is not a good thing and I’m working on it,” said Sydney high school student Enie Lam, 16. But the Supreme Court’s upcoming and potentially explosive transgender care case is dividing conservatives, with many of those same groups backing Tennessee’s ban on puberty blockers and hormone treatments, which critics say injects the state into family medical decisions and overrides parental rights. Tennessee, and many conservatives who support the state’s position, argues parental rights aren’t a factor in the case. Conservative groups have lined up in federal courts to make nearly identical parental rights arguments in other cases. That separate lawsuit specifically asked whether the state law violates the “fundamental right of parents” to make decisions about the medical care of their children. In allowing the Tennessee ban to take effect last year, a divided 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals brushed aside the parental rights arguments.

To get on the wrong side of transgender activists is often to endure their unsparing criticism. When J.K.
