Young Thug sat silently at the defense table Thursday, flanked by his two lawyers as he contemplated the paperwork in front of him. Sensing Young Thug’s struggle, the judge ordered a recess. At a news conference Thursday evening, Young Thug’s father, Jeffery Williams Sr., said he was upset with the travel prohibition and blamed Willis specifically.

The DOJ and FBI are preparing to combat election lies but have limited authority. Affordable Care Act coverage is available for DACA recipients for the first time. For the DOJ that means setting up an Election Threats Task force, focusing on the prosecutions of people who threaten election officials. To understand how that might play out, NBC News interviewed current and former Justice Department and FBI officials, as well as legal experts. For many DACA recipients who are unable to get job-based health insurance, a lack of access to government-funded programs meant their insurance options were limited or too expensive.

Atlanta rap star Young Thug agreed to change his plea to guilty Thursday in Georgia’s longest-running criminal trial, a stunning turn that, if approved by the judge, would bring his high-profile case to a close. The agreement comes after three of Young Thug's co-defendants took plea deals this week following mounting speculation that Whitaker could order a mistrial. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis used Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, or RICO, statute to claim Young Thug and his associates are a street gang with ties to the national Bloods gang. Whitaker this week approved plea deals for three of them: Quamarvious Nichols, 29; Marquavius Huey, 28; and Rodalius Ryan, 18. Young Thug first gained mainstream success with his 2014 drug anthem "Stoner."

A co-defendant in the racketeering and gun conspiracy case against Atlanta rapper Young Thug accepted a plea deal Tuesday after days of speculation over whether Georgia's longest-running criminal trial may end in a mistrial. Young Thug and the others have been jailed since 2022 on charges of conspiracy and criminal street gang activity and additional firearm- and drug-related charges. The indictment accuses Young Thug, 32, of leading a street gang, Young Slime Life, or YSL, with members committing illegal and violent acts, including murder, armed robbery, drug dealing and carjacking. Opening statements finally began last November after several defendants had already taken plea deals while others chose to be tried separately from Young Thug. The defendants have denied they are part of a street gang and critics contend the RICO law is being unfairly used against Black hip-hop artists.

These notorious groups dominated organized crime in Chicago and New York for decades –- until prosecutors brought them down with one sweeping charge: racketeering. Blakey has helped draft racketeering laws in at least 22 statesIt’s not a specific crimeSimply put, racketeering means engaging in an illegal scheme. Prosecutors must prove a pattern involving at least two instances of racketeering activity to convict someone under the law. "You are not to concern yourself with this change," Whitaker told the jury. Opening statements finally began in November 2023, after several defendants had already taken plea deals while others chose to be tried separately from Young Thug. She denied the various mistrial motions and a new request for Young Thug to be released on bond. Young Thug first gained mainstream success with his 2014 drug anthem “Stoner” and has worked with artists such as Travis Scott, Post Malone, Meek Mill and Drake. If found guilty, Young Thug and his co-defendants faced prison sentences of five to 20 years on the various charges.

A longtime Democratic stronghold and home to the city of Atlanta, Fulton County will present an uphill challenge for Kramer, a vocal Trump supporter. I’m very passionate about making sure the citizens of Fulton County feel confident in their DA,” he added. He lost the primary to Willis and former District Attorney Paul Howard, whom he later endorsed in a runoff. Asked if he believes that Willis has the support of Fulton County after her testimony, Dickens told CNN: “Yes. In that case, like she’s attempting to do with Trump and his allies, Willis used the racketeering statute as a tool to build a broad conspiracy case.

In her 14-page order, Brooklyn Federal Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall traced the evolution of hip-hop over five decades, referencing tracks from over a dozen artists before ultimately finding the lyrics inadmissible. “From the genre’s nascence as an oral tradition, rap artists have played the part of storytellers, providing a lens into their lives and those in their communities,” Hall wrote. The use of rap lyrics in criminal prosecutions has become a contentious subject in several high-profile cases, including the ongoing racketeering trial of Young Thug. Defense lawyers have claimed the government dragged its feet in indicting Washington and Jordan, making it harder for them to defend themselves. Both men have pleaded not guilty, as has a third defendant who was charged this past May and will be tried separately.

A defense lawyer for Young Thug told jurors his rapper name actually means "Truly Humble Under God." AdvertisementAn attorney defending Young Thug in his RICO trial said the Grammy winner's moniker actually stands for "Truly Humble Under God." Steel said Young Thug desired to break his community out of poverty and an "endless cycle of hopelessness," and that if he achieved his goal, he would be "Truly Humble Under God." "They call themselves YSL because the pants, tight-fitting pants, the women's pants that they're wearing it says YSL, Yves Saint Laurent. CNN —The prosecution began opening statements Monday morning in the racketeering trial of Grammy-winning rapper Young Thug, who is accused of leading a violent street gang in the Atlanta area affiliated with the national Bloods gang. Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, was charged alongside more than two dozen other people under the state’s expansive Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act – known as RICO. Young Thug is among six defendants who have pleaded not guilty to all charges and are standing trial in an Atlanta courtroom, the judge said Monday. Prosecutors say Young Thug is the cofounder of a criminal street gang – Young Slime Life – that’s responsible for violent acts dating back a decade. The trial is expected to last months and could feature a star-studded list of witnesses, including rappers Lil Wayne and Killer Mike.

When it comes to Swift and Kelce, it’s a coming together of two of America’s favorite obsessions – pop culture and sports. It wasn’t until this week that we actually heard from Kelce about Swift as his girlfriend, in the form of a new interview. “I’ve never dated anyone with that kind of aura about them,” Kelce said of Swift in a recent WSJ Magazine profile. ATLANTA (AP) — When rapper Young Thug goes to trial later this month on gang and racketeering charges, prosecutors will be allowed to use rap lyrics as evidence against him, a judge ruled Thursday. Young Thug, whose given name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, was indicted last year along with more than two dozen others. Young Thug has had enormous success as a rapper and has his own music label, Young Stoner Life. All of the defendants were accused of conspiring to violate the anti-racketeering law, and the indictment includes rap lyrics that prosecutors allege are overt acts “in furtherance of the conspiracy.”“The question is not rap lyrics. The question is gang lyrics,” prosecutor Mike Carlson told the judge during a hearing Wednesday, later adding.

A Fulton County DA's Office investigator "accidentally" shot herself at the courthouse. The woman shot herself in the leg on Friday, according to the Fulton County Sheriff's Office. "The shooting was an accidental discharge by a Fulton County District Attorney's Office investigator who wounded herself. "A Fulton County Sheriff's Office deputy responded and administered aid until EMS arrived," a press release from the sheriff's office also said, ABC News reported. The Fulton County courthouse was the site of Donald Trump and his co-defendants' arraignments after he was charged for his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Eve Hanan Courtesy Eve HananNot surprisingly, there are other criminal laws that are straightforward and appropriate to invoke against Trump. But Willis doesn’t stop there, and her invocation of RICO charges in particular raises concerns. To justify her RICO charges against Trump, Willis must point to particular acts by the former president that advanced the alleged criminal enterprise. But criminal law is designed to punish individual, not collective, guilt. By using RICO, Willis has given the defendants a potential prison sentence of five to 20 years.

Fulton County has spent eight months picking jurors for the trial of Young Thug and his associates. One involves the prolific Atlanta rapper Young Thug and his associates, who prosecutors allege are all part of a "criminal street gang" called Young Slime Life or YSL. Defendants, including Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, have maintained that YSL is just an artist label. In the past eight months, the Fulton County courthouse has been slogging through more than 2,000 potential jurors for the Young Thug trial. Similarly, jurors will be questioned about their political beliefs and if they will be able to put that aside in the Trump case.

On its face, the criminal case accusing former President Donald J. Trump and 18 of his allies of conspiring to overturn his 2020 election loss in Georgia has little in common with the other high-profile racketeering case now underway in the same Atlanta courthouse: that of the superstar rapper Young Thug and his associates. But the 15-month-old gang case against Young Thug — which, like the Trump case, is being prosecuted by Fani T. Willis, the Fulton County district attorney — offers glimpses of how State of Georgia v. Donald John Trump et al. may unfold: with a plodding pace, an avalanche of pretrial defense motions, extraordinary security measures, pressure on lower-level defendants to plead guilty, and a fracturing into separate trials, to name a few. Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, was indicted in May 2022 along with 27 others under Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statute, known as RICO. Like Mr. Trump’s RICO indictment, the charging papers described a corrupt “enterprise” whose members shared common illegal goals.

WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The indictment of Former President Donald Trump for interfering in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia will be the biggest case of prosecutor Fani Willis' career, but it will not be her first contentious prosecution. “She’s not afraid of big cases,” said Gerald Griggs, a criminal defense attorney and president of the Georgia state conference of the NAACP. Willis worked from 2001 to 2018 in the Fulton County prosecutor's office, then won election as county prosecutor in 2020, defeating her former boss, Paul Howard. Willis campaigned on building leniency programs for some low-level offenders, but also adopted a hard line on violent crime and gang activity. “Anybody that thinks they can unleash insults from a podium and that’s going to shake Fani Willis is sorely mistaken."

Aug 15 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump was indicted on Monday for his alleged efforts to illegally overturn the Georgia vote in the 2020 presidential election which put Joe Biden in the White House. After defendants in Georgia are indicted by a grand jury, they are arraigned, which is the formal reading in court of the charges. Trump will have his mugshot taken upon being taken into custody, Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat told local media this month. A jury of 12 people from Fulton County must all agree beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump is guilty for a conviction on any count. If Trump is convicted, he would likely seek a new trial by asserting the outcome was inconsistent with evidence or contrary to the law.

District Attorney Fani Willis brought charges against Trump and 18 other defendants under the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. The charges include forgery in the first degree, false statements and writing, and violating the RICO Act. If found guilty under the RICO Act, Trump could face a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum sentence of 20 years and a fine. She has also used the statute against local gangs and in an ongoing 56-count RICO case against rapper Young Thug and others. The RICO charge would also carry up to a 20-year prison sentence on its own, making it one of the more severe charges.
