South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Thursday lashed out at his political opponents as "anti-state forces," said North Korea has hacked the country's elections and defended his short-lived martial law order as a legal move to protect democracy. "I will fight to the end," he said near the end of a lengthy address broadcast on television. Yoon is under criminal investigation for alleged insurrection over the botched Dec. 3 martial law declaration, which sparked the biggest political crisis in South Korea in decades. Lawmakers broke through a police cordon, some by scaling the fence, to enter parliament and demand Yoon to rescind martial law within hours of the declaration. Even so, the opposition needs eight members of the PPP to vote with them for the president to be impeached.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been banned from leaving the country over a failed attempt at imposing martial law, a justice ministry official said on Monday, amid growing calls for him to step down and a deepening leadership crisis. Prosecutors on Sunday arrested ex-defense minister Kim Yong-hyun over his alleged role in the declaration of martial law on Dec. 3, Yonhap reported. Amid the backlash, multiple military officials, including the acting defense minister, have said they would not follow any new order to impose martial law again. The DP has also demanded the arrest of Yoon and any military officials implicated in the martial law fiasco. "Also, unlike a U.S. vice president, a South Korean prime minister is not elected, which means democratic legitimacy is weak.

Woo proposed a meeting of rival parties to discuss ways to suspend Yoon's presidential power immediately. The DP called for the arrest of Yoon and related military officials implicated in the martial law fiasco.

SEOUL, March 16 (Reuters) - As South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol landed in Tokyo on Thursday his plan to patch up relations with Japan faces lingering scepticism at home. Sixty-four percent of the respondents said South Korea did not need to rush to improve ties with Japan if there were no change in Tokyo's attitude, according to the poll. Yoon is the latest of many South Korean conservatives who embrace the argument that Seoul must heal divides with Japan to confront security challenges. Boycotts of Japanese products and vacations have largely faded in South Korea, and a growing number of South Koreans are travelling to Japan as COVID restrictions ease. Three Japanese animated films are among the top five at box office in South Korea.
