A former Israeli defense minister has accused his country of committing war crimes and ethnic cleansing in the Gaza Strip, in rare criticism from Israel’s own security community about military operations in the Palestinian enclave. The Israel Defense Forces and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. He also served as defense minister from 2013 to 2016, including during a 2014 war in Gaza that lasted more than six weeks and had been the longest conflict between Israel and Hamas until the current one. Netanyahu’s Likud party, of which Yaalon is a former member, said Yaalon was spreading “slanderous lies.”Yaalon’s comments came after the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant last month over alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Gaza Strip. The Biden administration also rejects the arrest warrants but has warned of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israel has allowed little aid to enter in recent months.

A former Israeli defense minister has accused Israel of committing war crimes and ethnic cleansing in the Gaza Strip, a rare critique from a member of the security establishment at a time of war. Mr. Yaalon served as the Israeli military’s chief of staff during the second intifada and as Mr. Netanyahu’s defense minister during the 2014 war in Gaza, the longest conflict between Israel and Hamas before the current war. But he broke with Mr. Netanyahu in 2016 and has since become a critic of the Israeli leader. At an event on Saturday, Mr. Yaalon denounced Mr. Netanyahu’s government for its actions in Gaza. He also said Israel was being pulled in the direction of building settlements in the territory, a notion that is supported by far-right politicians in Mr. Netanyahu’s government.

Netanyahu's office made the announcement as Israel faces widespread street protests over Netanyahu's contentious judicial overhaul plan. Levin is the mastermind of the overhaul plan. The signatories included Ehud Barak, a former Israeli prime minister, and Moshe Yaalon, a former army chief and defense minister. In a speech Thursday, Netanyahu doubled down on the overhaul and dismissed as absurd the accusations that the plan would destroy Israel's democratic foundations.
