The Belgian Grand Prix adds an estimated $248 million to the national economy each year. Abu Dhabi, which held its first Grand Prix in 2009, spent $40 billion constructing an artificial island to do it. "It didn't have anything before the plans for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix."

Former Formula One drivers believe Lewis Hamilton's blockbuster move to one of the most iconic teams in motorsport represents a major coup for the auto racing league. Mercedes on Thursday confirmed that the seven-time world champion will join Ferrari in 2025 after activating a release option in his contract. An extraordinary run of success has since dried up, however, and Hamilton has not won a race since the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix in Dec. 2021. Ferrari , meanwhile, released a short statement saying the team was "pleased" to announce Hamilton would join on a multi-year contract. The news sent shockwaves through F1, with 2009 world champion Jenson Button saying he'd also been taken by surprise.

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton is on the cusp of a surprise move from Mercedes to Ferrari for the 2025 season, according to multiple media reports. Hamilton first signed with Mercedes in 2013 and went on to win six of his seven world titles with the team between 2014 and 2020. If Hamilton were to leave Mercedes for Ferrari, it is reported he would likely replace Ferrari's Carlos Sainz given that his teammate, Charles Leclerc, recently signed a fresh contract extension. The start of the next Formula 1 season gets underway in Bahrain from Feb. 29.

CNN —And so the curtain falls on a Formula One season dominated by Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team, with the Dutchman securing a record-extending 19th victory of the year at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Never before has the sport seen a driver win with such regularity and ease, the three-time world champion again comfortably crossing the finishing line first at the season-ending race at the Yas Marina Circuit. Verstappen led from start to finish to secure his fourth win on the trot in Abu Dhabi. “It was an incredible season,” Verstappen told reporters. At one point, it seemed probable rather than possible that the team would win every race of the season, an outcome that faded away when Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz won the Singapore Grand Prix.

Scuffles broke out on Friday between U.N. peacekeepers and Turkish Cypriot security personnel when peacekeepers tried to prevent roadworks starting in an area the U.N. says is part of a buffer zone under its jurisdiction. Erdogan also said Turkey will continue to side with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a breakaway state recognised only by Ankara. Turkish Cypriot authorities want to build a road that would give residents of Pyla/Pile, a village in the U.N.-administered buffer zone, direct access to territory under Turkish Cypriot control. Turkish Cypriot authorities say the peacekeeping force, known as UNFICYP, overstepped its boundaries. Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar characterised the road project as essential.

The choice is theirs," Masi told News Corp media. "I've always had an open door policy and will always have an open door policy, since the moment that I arrived in this F1 paddock and that continues." Hamilton said on Thursday he had no plans to meet Masi and was only focussed on his future. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff echoed Hamilton, saying he wanted to leave the past behind. "No," he said when asked if he would meet Masi.

Jan 24 (Reuters) - Gulf stock markets closed higher on Tuesday on expectations of economic recovery in the world's second largest economy, China, and smaller interest rate hikes from the U.S. Federal Reserve. Most Gulf currencies are pegged to the U.S. dollar, while Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar usually mirror U.S. monetary policy changes. The world's largest Islamic bank by market capitalization, Al Rajhi Bank (1120.SE), rose 0.8%. Qatar Islamic Bank (QISB.QA) continued its gains with a 2.3% rise and Qatar International Islamic Bank (QIIB.QA) rose 1.7%. Egypt has signed a $1.5 billion financing agreement with the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation to fund its trading, including imports of energy products and essential commodities.
That's just how F1 is, says Hulkenberg on Schumacher's exit

Nov 21 (Reuters) - Germany's Nico Hulkenberg showed little sympathy on Monday for Mick Schumacher after replacing his younger compatriot at the Haas Formula One team next season. "That’s just how F1 is and ultimately the driver, when he’s racing, he has to convince the team with performance. Le Mans 24 Hours winner Hulkenberg has started 181 races but last raced full-time in Formula One in 2019 with Renault, now Alpine. Hulkenberg said the desire to get back on the grid had returned this season and he contacted Haas team boss Guenther Steiner. Times have moved on, both drivers now have young daughters and Hulkenberg said he expected a good relationship.
ABU DHABI, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton said on Thursday that he expected his old rival Sebastian Vettel to make a Formula One comeback. The 35-year-old four-times champion is bowing out of the sport after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday but Hamilton believes the 53-time grand prix race winner will find the lure of F1 hard to resist. "Obviously after the change from Ferrari to Aston Martin at that time it was the first time I really thought it might be the time to stop...," he added. Vettel jokingly suggested he could agree some sort of a swap with Hamilton, who turns 38 in January but is keen on extending his Mercedes deal. "We can make a deal ... when you want to get away, maybe then (I want to come back)," he said.
Nov 16 (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton has one more chance to avoid his first Formula One season without a win and it comes on Sunday in the place where last year he suffered one of the biggest blows of his career. The prospects look a lot brighter with Mercedes ending their season-long blank in Brazil last weekend with George Russell's breakthrough win. "I think he mentioned before that this race record of winning a race in every single season is less of a priority for him. Hamilton took only six races in his debut 2007 season to become a winner and has won at least once in every campaign since then. "I'm not focused on the record but of course, I'm trying to get that win this year," Hamilton said in September.

SAO PAULO, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Australian Oscar Piastri will drive for McLaren in Formula One's Abu Dhabi post-season test after the team reached an agreement with Renault-owned Alpine to release him, both sides said on Saturday. French driver Pierre Gasly will also be freed by Red Bull-owned AlphaTauri to test with Alpine, the team he is joining for 2023. McLaren announced in September that 21-year-old Piastri, Alpine's reserve this year, had signed for 2023 as a replacement for compatriot Daniel Ricciardo after winning a contract dispute. He said Piastri would start working officially with McLaren on Nov. 21 and test the current car at Yas Marina. Seidl said getting Piastri in the car for the Abu Dhabi test was important.
An ancient Christian monastery possibly dating as far back as the years before Islam spread across the Arabian Peninsula has been discovered on an island off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, officials announced Thursday. The monastery on Siniyah Island, part of the sand-dune sheikhdom of Umm al-Quwain, sheds new light on the history of early Christianity along the shores of the Persian Gulf. On one, to the island’s northeast, archaeologists discovered the monastery. Viewed from above, the monastery on Siniyah Island’s floor plan suggests early Christian worshippers prayed within a single-aisle church at the monastery. Power said that development spurred the archaeological work that discovered the monastery.
