More Chinese companies are becoming global players. In all, BYD, state-owned SAIC and other Chinese companies gained 9% of the global electric car market in the second quarter, up from 5% in the second quarter, Counterpoint Research said. That's on top of the companies' share in the domestic Chinese market — the largest globally for autos. For the full year, XCMG has an export sales growth target of 50% growth, UBS stock analyst Phyllis Wang and a team said in a Sept. 4 note. Chinese companies have been trying to "go global" for years, with tacit encouragement from Beijing.

Global News Changing Tides The first international agreement to protect the world's oceans aims to create “international parks” in the high seas. The high seas represent 95% of the world’s total habitat by volume, but the nautical world remains largely unexplored. “A sentiment we often encountered was that there’s not much in terms of biodiversity out there in the high seas,” he said. MPAs that already exist mostly occupy exclusive economic zones and only make up about 3% of the high seas. A 2016 Pew study on mapping governance in the high seas showed 19 governing bodies with a high seas mandate.

China’s economy has kicked off the year of the rabbit with a bounce worthy of its sprightly zodiac avatar. The January and February Chinese purchasing managers indexes are always worth watching because they are one of the few pieces of concrete data to emerge from China in late winter and early spring. Both the official and privately compiled Caixin manufacturing indexes jumped, with the former reaching 52.6, its highest since 2012.

Taiwan-based Foxconn, which has about 300,000 workers in Zhengzhou, has not disclosed the number of infected workers. On Oct. 19, Foxconn banned all dining-in at canteens and required workers to take their meals in their dormitories, but assured that production was normal. Photographs and videos circulating widely on Chinese social media since Saturday showed Foxconn workers trekking across fields in the day and along roads at night. "They were Foxconn employees who escaped from the factory and were walking home," wrote a user of WeChat in a post about the social media images. Returning workers are to travel "point-to-point" in pre-arranged vehicles en route, and are to be quarantined on arrival, they said in separate letters on their respective social media accounts addressed to Zhengzhou Foxconn workers.
