New York CNN —At any Tesla event, you have to go in expecting a good amount of smoke and mirrors. This is the company run by Elon Musk, after all — its self-anointed Technoking who’s made overpromising and underdelivering a theme of his career. ICYMI: The robotaxis, Tesla’s fully driverless vehicles that it hopes to put into service next year, were the main event. But Musk’s reality distortion field is something else entirely — hardly limited to overly optimistic timetables or pie-in-the-sky projections for Tesla’s delivery schedule. In a twist, though, X dropped Unilever from the lawsuit on Friday.

CNBC flagged posts with the false information to Meta. A company spokesperson said, “Meta has sent them to third-party fact-checkers for further review.”Across the U.S., with 40 days until the Nov. 5 election, state and local officials say they are puzzled by what to expect from Facebook. In 2016, Facebook was hammered by Russian operatives, pushing out false posts about Hillary Clinton to bolster Trump. Given Maricopa County’s high profile during the election season, the state often attracts attention from Facebook users across the country. During a Senate hearing last week on election threats, Meta’s head of global affairs, Nick Clegg, fielded questions about the company’s election preparedness.

New York CNN —Elon Musk is using his social media platform to promote misinformation about the presidential candidates in the lead up to the November election, amplifying false claims Wednesday about a Trump rally bomb threat and immigrants eating pets in Ohio. Then on Wednesday, Musk reshared a bogus claim that a bomb had been discovered near the site of a planned Trump rally in Long Island. Musk’s own post has been earmarked with a crowd-sourced “community notes” fact-check that makes clear the claim was false. X did not respond to a CNN request for comment Wednesday on Musk’s posts. Musk is far from the only figure spreading false information on the platform, though he is easily one of its biggest voices.

A former Twitter board member, Omid Kordestani, sued the social media company owned by Elon Musk on Friday, claiming that the billionaire refused to cash out more than $20 million worth of shares. Mr. Kordestani, who joined Twitter’s board in 2015 and helped oversee the sale of the company to Mr. Musk in 2022, received most of his compensation in stock. But after Mr. Musk bought the company, now called X, he refused to pay Mr. Kordestani for those shares, the lawsuit said. A representative for X did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Such a public battle between a former board member and the company he once helped manage is rare — most boardroom disputes are settled quietly behind the scenes.

The complaint, filed in San Francisco County Superior Court, alleges fraud, breach of contract and misappropriation of Lemon’s name and likeness. Musk and X enticed Lemon with “false promises and representations,” the complaint alleges. In May 2023, shortly after CNN terminated Lemon, Musk posted on X: “Have you considered doing your show on this platform? Within a day of the interview, Musk sent Lemon’s agent a text message saying the partnership and contract were canceled. “To this day, Defendants have not compensated Lemon pursuant to the exclusive partnership deal that Defendants induced Lemon to enter into,” the filing says.

New York CNN —Vivian Jenna Wilson, Elon Musk’s estranged daughter, publicly refuted several recent anti-trans statements her Tesla CEO and X owner father has made about her. After her transition, the billionaire said, he “vowed to destroy the woke mind virus.”Musk has previously been criticized for his anti-trans comments. Musk has previously spoken about his daughter, including in the authorized biography written by journalist Walter Isaacson and published last year. In the book, the billionaire blamed his daughter’s transition in part on her time at a progressive, Los Angeles school. In the Peterson interview, Musk said he considers his child “dead” following her transition.

CNN —An unnamed woman was denied a top-secret security clearance this year due to being a “close” relative of an authoritarian dictator of an unnamed country, according to a publicly available document from the Defense Department’s Office of Hearings and Appeals. The judge said that Country X “supports international terrorism, and it conducts cyberattacks and espionage against the United States.”“Applicant was born a citizen of Country X,” the record says. “A close family member (cousin, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew) is the dictator of Country X. Applicant’s parents and their children, including Applicant, immigrated to the United States in the 1990s when she was young. Administrative decisions on security clearance eligibility are regularly posted publicly by the Defense Office of Hearings and Appeals. “One thing people forget is it’s not like you get the keys to the kingdom,” Posard said of a secret clearance, which is the second lowest level security clearance available.

New York CNN —Elon Musk has given up, restoring the “lords and peasants” blue checkmark system he once admonished and assailed as elitism. “Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bullshit,” Musk wrote in November 2022. But most journalists and other notable users who once sported the checkmark declined to fork over the cash. Even worse, trolls impersonating the identities of others were granted blue checkmarks, stripping the symbol of its core value: identity verification. A representative for X did not respond to a request for comment on Musk’s move to restore the blue checkmarks.

CNN —A federal judge on Monday threw out a lawsuit by Elon Musk’s X that had targeted a watchdog group for its critical reports about hate speech on the social media platform. In a blistering 52-page order, the judge blasted X’s case as plainly punitive rather than about protecting the platform’s security and legal rights. X has blamed CCDH’s reports, which showcase the prevalence of hate speech on the platform, for amplifying brand safety concerns and driving advertisers away from the site. In the suit, X claimed that it had suffered tens of millions of dollars in damages from CCDH’s publications. “If CCDH’s publications were defamatory, that would be one thing, but X Corp. has carefully avoided saying that they are,” Breyer wrote.

Apple said it reached the decision “following conversations with Epic” in which Epic committed to following Apple’s new EU-focused policies. “Epic Sweden AB has been permitted to re-sign the developer agreement and accepted into the Apple Developer Program,” Apple said in a statement. New Delhi CNN —Netflix has removed an Indian film from its platform after it sparked backlash and protest from right wing Hindu groups – the latest in several recent controversies where India’s entertainment industry has caved to religious pressure campaigns. The movie was released on Netflix on December 29, where it quickly became the streaming platform’s top trending movie in India, according to production studio Zee Entertainment. “We removed this film at the request of the licensor,” a Netflix spokesperson confirmed to CNN in a statement Tuesday. CNN reached out to Zee Entertainment and the film’s director, but did not receive a response by the time of publication. That incident, like the ongoing controversy over ‘Annapoorani,’ prompted a police complaint against Netflix executives.

Circuit Court of Appeals threw out a 3-2 decision issued last year by the National Labor Relations Board, which had said Tesla couldn’t prohibit union attire. The court opinion noted that Tesla allowed workers to affix “any number or size” of pro-union stickers to company-issued clothing. “We may have concluded differently had Tesla prohibited union insignia," read the opinion issued Tuesday by a unanimous panel of three 5th Circuit judges. The opinion comes as the 5th Circuit prepares for arguments in another union-related matter involving Tesla, NLRB and the assembly plant in Fremont, California. But that order was vacated after the full 5th Circuit, currently with 16 full-time judges, voted to hear the matter.

CNN —A smaller share of Gen Z is thriving compared to millennials at the same age, and members of Gen Z are far less likely to describe their mental health as “excellent,” according to a new study. The study, released Thursday, aims to reflect the voices of Gen Z on key issues the generation faces. According to the study, both millennials and members of Gen X “report far lower mental health ratings” today than they did a decade ago. “This generation may be more tuned in to recognizing issues with their mental health than older generations,” psychologist Walter Evans said. Another characteristic of Gen Z: optimismThe picture members of Gen Z paint of their lives is far from bleak.
