CNN —“Reservation Dogs” star D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai made a powerful statement on the red carpet at Sunday’s Emmy Awards ceremony, pairing a black tuxedo with what looked like a bloody red handprint smeared across his mouth. The murder rate for women on reservations in the United States is 10 times higher than the national average, and murder is the third leading cause of death for Native women, according to the Urban Indian Health Institute. In Canada, the number of Indigenous women and girls who have been killed or vanished is in the thousands. In 2016, the government launched a national inquiry into missing and murdered women and girls. Actresses Kali Reis and Lily Gladstone also made history at this year’s Emmys, becoming the first Indigenous women to be nominated in the acting category, according to Variety.

SINGAPORE, June 12 (Reuters) - Singapore lender DBS Group (DBSM.SI) is stepping up its focus on the business of family offices, where its assets have surged in the last two years. Southeast Asia's largest bank by assets is introducing a new investment platform tailored towards the needs of family offices, which are one-stop firms that manage the portfolios of the wealthy. DBS said in a statement it is currently in talks with more than 20 clients and prospective clients across Asia to provide the new investment solution. "It is also an attractive option for some families who are not looking to immediately relocate to Singapore, but would like to consolidate their assets here," said Lee Woon Shiu, DBS' Group Head of Wealth Planning, Family Office and Insurance Solutions. Seoul, South Korea CNN —Ukraine’s first lady Olena Zelenska asked South Korea to provide non-lethal military hardware when she met with President Yoon Suk Yeol in Seoul on Tuesday, both countries have reported. But an official from Yoon’s office said Zelenska stopped short of asking for lethal weapons, acknowledging that South Korea would have found it difficult to oblige had any such request been made. Since the war broke out in Ukraine, South Korea has maintained its stance of not providing lethal weapons to a warring country, although Yoon has hinted at a possible major policy shift. The Ukrainian first lady handed Yoon “a personal letter and an invitation from the president of Ukraine” to visit her country, the Ukrainian side said. Last year, she met US first lady Jill Biden privately at the White House to discuss American support for Ukraine.

Operating profit likely fell to 1.08 trillion won in the quarter ended March 31, according to a Refinitiv SmartEstimate from 27 analysts, weighted toward those who are more consistently accurate. That is lowest since a 590 billion won profit in the first quarter of 2009, according to company data, and compares with an operating profit of 14.12 trillion won last year. In February, Samsung Electronics said it planned to borrow 20 trillion won from unit Samsung Display to use as operational funds until August 2025. Operating profit at Samsung's mobile business likely fell by 9% to 3.46 trillion won in the March quarter, an average of seven analyst estimates showed.

Samsung said it will make a 300 trillion Korean won investment in a new semiconductor facility in South Korea over the next two decades. It is part of a broader tech investment plan by the South Korean government. The South Korean government is looking to join together its biggest technology companies to spur development in key areas. The new 300 trillion won chip complex Samsung is building will be just outside of the South Korean capital of Seoul. The South Korean government said that companies will build five chip manufacturing facilities in the cluster.

A fire destroyed about 60 makeshift homes in a densely packed neighborhood surrounded by some of the wealthiest streets of South Korea’s ultramodern capital Friday. Firefighters extinguished the flames in Seoul’s Guryong village within about five hours, and no injuries or deaths were reported. Shin Yong-ho, an official at the fire department of Seoul’s Gangnam district, said rescue workers have searched areas affected by the fire but all residents were believed to have safely evacuated. Photos showed firefighters fighting the flames under thick, white smoke covering the village as helicopters sprayed water from above. Kim Ah-reum, an official at the Gangnam district office, said around 500 residents evacuated to nearby facilities including a school gym.
