CNN —Ex-President Donald Trump responded to a second apparent assassination attempt that he blames on incendiary political rhetoric by inflaming the situation even more. He accused President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris of inviting assassins to target him when they warn that he is a threat to democracy. But Trump’s claims that Biden and Harris bear direct culpability underscore the extreme nature of his own political instincts. Biden and Trump had a telephone conversation, and the president conveyed his relief that his erstwhile rival was safe. And when he refused to concede that he lost the 2020 election, Trump called supporters to Washington, DC, and told them to “fight like hell” or they wouldn’t have a country anymore.

Instead, Haitian residents and advocates were confronted by a small group of frustrated Springfield residents and at least one right-wing provocateur Saturday evening outside the local Haitian Community Help & Support Center. They questioned why so many immigrants had moved into Springfield “illegally,” a claim that city officials have repeatedly said is not true. Haitian residents and people who had gathered to support them deescalated the confrontation shortly before police arrived. Thrust into the national spotlight by baseless — and to many, racist — rumors of Haitian residents killing and eating wildlife and pets, its economic comeback has been dramatically overshadowed by tensions that once rarely reached beyond city council meetings.

Mike DeWine of Ohio on Sunday rebuked the false conspiracy theories that have been amplified by former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, about Haitian immigrants stealing and eating people's pets in Springfield, Ohio. Trump and Vance have both tripled down on spreading the false rumors, despite growing pleas from Ohio governing officials for them to stop the misinformation. "This discussion just has to stop," DeWine said. Following the comments from Trump and Vance, Springfield schools have faced bomb threats, forcing evacuations and temporary closures. "He's going to do well in Ohio," DeWine said.
