Israeli strikes killed 38 people in southern Gaza, according to local officials, and three journalists overnight in southern Lebanon, their networks and local officials said — an attack that drew accusations of war crimes Friday from the country's government. Israeli forces meanwhile besieged and stormed one of the few functioning hospitals in northern Gaza according to local health officials, as they continued an intense assault on that part of the Palestinian enclave. Lebanese Information Minister Ziad Makary accused Israel of intentionally targeting the journalists in an attack he said amounted to a "war crime." “The Israeli enemy waited for the journalists’ night break to betray them in their sleep," Makary said in a post on X. "This is an assassination, after monitoring and tracking, with prior planning and design, as there were 18 journalists present at the location representing seven media institutions.

An all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah — the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shia militant and political organization, called a terrorist group by the U.S. and U.K. — would be devastating for both sides. At least 150,000 residents of southern Lebanon and northern Israel have been evacuated from their homes and are internally displaced due to the regular cross-border fire. "A full-fledged war between Israel and Hizbullah would be a disastrous event for the region, including both Israel and Lebanon," Victor Tricaud, a senior analyst at consulting firm Control Risks, told CNBC. But the group has not referred to a dead fighter as a “commander” since January, when Wissam Hassan al-Tawil, a commander in the group’s Radwan unit, was killed in a strike. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strike. On Tuesday, the Israeli military said that Hezbollah had fired about 50 rockets into Israel from southern Lebanon. Opinion: What Iran wants — and fears

Iran has backed Hezbollah’s efforts to avoid an all-out war with Israel despite consistent Israeli escalation and threats. Hezbollah doesn’t want a war with Israel and Iran agrees. The potential for such US or Israeli airstrikes is among the most significant reasons Iran wants to avoid a broader conflict. Tehran has already restrained its Iraqi proxies, is working to help Hezbollah climb down and avoid a devastating Israeli attack. And Iran is probably urging the Houthis to take great care not to kill Americans or otherwise go too far.

July 31 (Reuters) - Memory chipmaker Western Digital Corp (WDC.O) forecast a bigger-than-expected loss in the first quarter and revenue below Wall Street targets on Monday as weak demand, mainly for its cloud business, forces it to cut production. Cloud companies will take another "couple of quarters" to clear out excess inventory, finance chief Wissam Jabre said in June. Western Digital forecast its adjusted loss per share to be in the range of $2.10 to $1.80, compared to an estimated loss of $1.40 per share. It also forecast revenue for the same period below estimates. Rival Seagate Technology (STX.O) also forecast downbeat revenue for its first quarter last week, on weakness in major market China and lower tech spending.

Mbappe targets Ligue 1 scoring record with PSG next season
  + stars: | 2023-06-04 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Mbappe scored his 29th league goal of the season in PSG's final game on Saturday, a 3-2 defeat by Clermont, to finish top of the Ligue 1 scoring charts yet again. The Frenchman was earlier named Ligue 1 player of the season for the fourth time in a row last week. "It's true that it was at the end of the season, when we'd won the title, that it was a personal goal and I've achieved it. After vowing to honour his PSG contract, Mbappe's words are another clear indication that he will stay amid rumours of interest from Real Madrid, a club that has courted him in the past but failed to land the French forward. Mbappe signed a contract extension with PSG until 2025 last year, but Sky Sports reported it was only a two-year deal with a player option for a third year - which means Mbappe will be entering the final year of his contract next season.

It was a cold, blustery morning in November 2019 when the city of Dresden, in eastern Germany, woke up to a shock. Overnight, robbers had stolen a hundred-million dollar royal jewelry collection from the city’s historic Green Vault, a set of basement suites in a castle that is now part of a museum. The robbers left the vault floor covered with shards of broken glass and blanketed it with powder to throw forensic investigators off their scent. On Tuesday, in a high-security Dresden courtroom, five men — all from the same notorious Berlin crime family — were convicted and sentenced for their role in the heist and the getaway. The sixth defendant was acquitted because he had an alibi.
Ben Yedder leads Monaco to 3-1 win over injury-hit PSG

The result moved Monaco up to second place with 47 points, a point above Olympique de Marseille who visit mid-table Clermont later on Saturday. PSG suffered their third league defeat this season but remain top with 54 points from 23 games. Aleksandr Golovin opened the scoring in the fourth minute when PSG failed to clear, with the midfielder side-footing home after Ben Yedder got past three defenders to set up the shot. Monaco doubled the lead 14 minutes later after fine work by Krepin Diatta, who pressed inexperienced 17-year-old defender El El Chadaille Bitshiabu into an error that allowed Ben Yedder to fire the ball past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. But Ben Yedder restored Monaco's two-goal advantage going into the break when he was released through the centre by Eliesse Ben Seghir, scoring his 14th Ligue 1 goal to move level with Reims' Folarin Balogun at the top of the scoring charts.
PSG suffer another defeat as Ligue 1 lead cut to three points

PARIS, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Paris St Germain suffered their second defeat of the season in a 1-0 loss to Stade Rennais on Sunday as their Ligue 1 lead was slashed to three points. Despite the win, Rennes slipped down to fifth on 37 points, behind Monaco on goal difference after the principality side destroyed AC Ajaccio 7-1 earlier on Sunday with a Wissam Ben Yedder hat-trick. If we find it again it will be fine," said PSG captain Marquinhos. Midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery, 16, became the youngest player to start a Ligue 1 game for PSG and was nowhere near the Italian's level. A homophobic banner was also displayed in the stands, which will likely trigger sanctions from the French league (LFP).
