On paper, Vice President Kamala Harris should be feeling hopeful about Wisconsin. The last 40 public polls included in The New York Times polling average of the vital battleground state show her leading in 28, tied in four and trailing former President Donald J. Trump in eight. Ms. Harris, who is set to hold a rally in Madison on Friday evening, was up by four percentage points in the latest survey from Marquette Law School, widely considered the gold standard of Wisconsin polling. The Times polling average has shown her leading every day, albeit narrowly, since Aug. 6. And yet, in what has appeared to be Democrats’ strongest battleground state even when President Biden was still in the race, Democrats, Republicans and even the state’s pollsters can agree on one thing: They don’t fully trust the polling and don’t believe Ms. Harris is ahead by as much as some of the surveys say.

Businessman Eric Hovde won the Wisconsin Republican primary for Senate, NBC News projects, setting up a critical battleground state race against Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin. Baldwin’s seat is a top priority for both parties in the battle for control of the closely divided Senate. Baldwin has also fared better than the top of the Democratic ticket in some recent Wisconsin polling. An independently wealthy businessman, Hovde, who ran unsuccessfully for Senate in 2012, has already loaned his campaign $13 million. With Hovde long viewed as the favorite to win the GOP nomination, the two candidates have already been trading barbs.

A man armed with a knife demanded election workers in Wisconsin "stop the voting," police said. Workers at a polling station in West Bend called police, who said arrested a 38-year-old man. No one was hurt and there isn't any other threat against the polling place, police added. The library is a polling location for West Bend, a city of over 30,000 people north of Milwaukee in the southeast part of the state. "All library staff, election officials, and citizens are safe and the polling site is re-opened," West Bend police said, adding that they "would like to thank the library staff for taking quick action and voters who waited patiently to vote."
