Lower Social Security COLA forecast for 2025Unlike most other sources of retirement income, Social Security benefits are automatically adjusted for inflation each year. As current retirees continue to feel the pinch of higher costs, slowing inflation points to a lower Social Security cost-of-living adjustment next year. The Social Security cost-of-living adjustment may be 3% in 2025, estimates Mary Johnson, an independent Social Security and Medicare analyst. In contrast, beneficiaries saw a 3.2% Social Security cost-of-living adjustment this year — resulting in an average retirement benefit increase of just over $50 per month. That followed record high Social Security cost-of-living adjustments of 8.7% in 2023 and 5.9% in 2022.

Out west, Denes hopes to plant seeds of community with the help of the project’s host, Tinworks, an arts organization in the rapidly developing city of Bozeman. “Wheat is wonderful — it sustains humanity and is probably the most planted food next to rice. Jenny Moore/TinworksSome 200 packets of wheat were also distributed among Bozeman residents to grow concurrently with Denes' field. “Can you imagine if I could have realized 20 or 30?”Sowing seeds for changeAs with “Wheatfield,” seeds have often served as potent symbols for Denes. The day after Hamas’s brazen Oct. 7 attack on military and civilian targets in Israel, the S.J.P. chapters co-signed an open letter declaring “full solidarity with Palestinian resistance.” The letter described the attacks as “an unprecedented historic moment for the Palestinians of Gaza” and a “counteroffensive against their settler-colonial oppressor.” It would be tantamount to “asking for quiet submission to systemic violence” for anyone to call for peace now, after years of Israeli violence and military campaigns against Palestinians. The groups issued a list of demands to the university — divestment from companies doing business with the Israeli government, the end of Columbia’s affiliation with Tel Aviv University and a recognition of Palestinian “existence and humanity” — and announced a demonstration on Oct. 12 on the steps of Low Library. “We got some pushback from the university,” recalled Cameron Jones, an organizer of the J.V.P. chapter, “but not insane pushback.”

On a nearly 90-degree September morning, Verena Adelsberger held her first pumpkin spice latte in a downtown Manhattan Starbucks. It wasn’t just her first of the season. Ms. Adelsberger, 25, who was visiting the United States from Zell am See, Austria, was moved to try the pumpkin spice latte, often called the P.S.L., after seeing it celebrated online for years. She took a sip of it, which she ordered as a Frappuccino, and grinned. “It’s very sweet.”She rated it a seven out of 10, and then she left to catch the ferry to an equally classic piece of American culture: the Statue of Liberty.

It would have seemed inconceivable then, but the atomic bomb did fade out of mind. And it’s precisely at this moment that Christopher Nolan is asking audiences to look it soberly in the eye. As the name suggests, Nolan has taken on the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientific genius and conflicted godfather of the atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy as godfather of the atomic bomb J. Robert Oppenheimer in "Oppenheimer." But even if a war involving a nuclear power hadn’t erupted in Europe in 2022, Nolan believes “Oppenheimer” contains crossover anxieties.
