In the four years since their unlikely bond was posted online, the odd couple has attracted almost two million followers on Instagram and Facebook. But in an emotional video posted online Tuesday, Peggy’s owners, Juliette Wells and Reece Mortensen, announced that the animals had been separated. Wildlife officials worried that others would follow their lead of domesticating wild animals in the hope of profiting online. Followers are being urged to write to their local member of parliament and the director general of the department. Bernard Ashcroft, CEO of Wildlife Rescue Australia, said the law prohibits people from taking wild animals as pets, for good reason.

Over 2,000 dead penguins have washed up on the shores of Uruguay. The birds have tested negative for the avian flu, leaving experts guessing at causes of death. According to the Times, Magellanic penguins can be found across the Pacific and the Atlantic, with concentrations in the Falkland Islands, Chile, and Argentina. The Times added that they move north in colder temperatures to find warmer water and food. Tesore added that he found other dead animals on the beach, like seagulls and sea turtles.

Confirmation of a likely genetic cause for the children’s deaths has implications far beyond Australia for parents who have been accused of killing or harming their babies. The advances in genetic testing used to free Folbigg are giving other families hope that science may explain why their children have died, but experts say sometimes even that can’t exonerate parents – often mothers – accused of harming them. How the science is helping othersOne of the lead authors of the study, Professor Carola Vinuesa, says that Folbigg’s case has encouraged other families and lawyers to come forward, seeking genetic evidence to clear mothers accused of harming their babies. Some mothers accused of injuring their children are seeking a genetic explanation for their symptoms to counter claims of child abuse, she said. “The majority of these mothers have not harmed their children, but the children have these very rare conditions.

REUTERS/Evan GarciaCORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, June 8 (Reuters) - Endangered sea turtles and other marine wildlife have found refuge in a new coastal rescue center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Like other reptiles, sea turtles are limited in how much they can regulate and control their core body temperatures. The Kemp's ridley sea turtle is the smallest species of sea turtle and most critically endangered in the world, according to the National Park Service. Ullmer explained how cold-stunning events cause sea turtles' heart and respiratory rates to drop dangerously low, along with a dramatic slowdown of their metabolisms. Ullmer readied one of the rescue turtles to check for recurrence of abnormalities on the CT scan.

It wasn’t long before Ukrainian veterinarians Valentina and Leonid Stoyanov learned that many pets were locked in nearby homes. “After one, two weeks … neighbors just start hear (sic) how a lot of different animals around them screaming,” Valentina told CNN. The Stoyanovs began working with local police to access homes to rescue dogs and cats. “Each animal for us, it’s like members of our family,” Valentina said. “All our family – mother, father – have to leave Ukraine,” Leonid said.

REUTERS/Stelios MisinasATHENS, March 17 (Reuters) - Greek veterinarians are fighting to save a white tiger cub abandoned in a rubbish bin at an Athens zoo, believed to be a victim of the illegal wildlife trade. The three-month old white tiger was found on Feb. 28 under a garbage bin in the parking lot of the Attica Zoological Park by a cleaner, who notified the zoo owner. "It is the first time ever we had such an animal dumped outside our zoo," said zoo founder Jean-Jacques Lesueur. Lesueur said if the tiger survives it will have to be relocated to a sanctuary, as the zoo has no other animals of its kind.
Pictures of rescued elephants show the toll of the tourist trade on the hard-working animals. Unlike horses, elephants were not bred to be ridden and tourist treks can cause irreversible damage. ‘Wildcat’ Review: Finding Peace With Predators

The documentary “Wildcat” is about wildlife conservation the way Ernest Hemingway ’s “Big Two-Hearted River” was about fly-fishing. Both are, instead, about the balm of nature on the wounds of war. Directed by Melissa Lesh and Trevor Beck Frost , “Wildcat” is not a short story. It’s not: The story of Ms. Zwicker and her abusive, alcoholic but lovable father is not just background. It establishes her in the not-uncommon position of being a woman who thinks she can save a tormented man.

WARSAW, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Four lion cubs and a black leopard cub from war-torn Ukraine have found safety in a Polish zoo, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) said, after surviving drone attacks and bombing in the first few months of their lives. The cubs were transferred to animal rescue organisations in Kyiv and Odessa after a crackdown on the exotic pet trade in Ukraine, and are now in Poznan zoo in western Poland awaiting onward travel. IFAW said it had partnered with a sanctuary in the United States and one in Europe to care for the cubs, who were bred in captivity and cannot be released into the wild. The Wildcat Sanctuary (TWS) in the United States will take care of the lion cubs.
