A Nigerian TV broadcast from 2021 of settlements belonging to the Fulani ethnic group being torn down in Abuja is being falsely shared online as building demolitions ordered by a government minister in 2023. Speaking in August at the site of a deadly building collapse in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory minister Nyesom Wike said all structures in his constituency without adequate building approvals would be demolished (here). Some social media users then shared a broadcast report about Fulani settlements being torn down, suggesting it showed Wike’s order being carried out. “FCT Minister Nyesom Wike at work ooo, starting from Fulani settlement and some areas along Airport,Abuja, FCT, Nigeria,” said Facebook posts sharing the video (here), (here). But the report, from Independent Television/Radio Abuja, was first broadcast on May 31, 2021 (here).

On the overall list of the world’s Best Countries, Russia – where the survey was not fielded for the second year in a row – fell one spot to No. Among individuals in specific nations, the percentage of those agreeing this year that Russia is a “threat to the world” eclipsed 90% in several: Denmark, Finland, Japan and Poland. The only other countries with higher majorities agreeing that China is a global threat were Japan (91%) and South Korea (86%). Among respondents who do consider the U.S. a global threat, the highest share of agreement came from China at about 75%, while agreement eclipsed 60% among those from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and New Zealand. Still, the possibility of geoeconomic conflict is troubling, according to Ellissa Cavaciuti-Wishart, head of the Global Risks Initiative at the World Economic Forum.

An audio clip of two Nigerian officials being shared online is confusing people who believe it was recorded after Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election. The recording features Rivers State governor Nysesom Wike and former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose. They are overheard discussing an incident at a vote collation centre in Rivers State (here). It was uploaded to Sahara TV on Dec. 29, 2016, in relation to violence during a Rivers State election re-run (here). The audio is at least seven years old and is unrelated to the 2023 Nigerian presidential election.
