CNN —A gold watch gifted to the captain of a ship which rescued more than 700 passengers and crew from the Titanic has sold for a record-breaking £1.56 million ($1.97 million). The gold pocket watch was inscribed with a message from the three surviving widows to mark their "heartfelt gratitude and appreciation" for Captain Rostron. The previous record for a Titanic-related object sold at auction was also a pocket watch, which sold for £1.175 million ($1.485 million) earlier this year. For auctioneer Andrew Aldridge, the latest sale is a sign that interest in the story of the Titanic shows no sign of slowing down. The watch was sold to a private collector in the US and the sale figure includes fees and taxes paid by the buyer, according to PA media.

Mr. Ford kept their daughter at home to ensure Ms. Ford wouldn’t tell anyone in the emergency room how Robert’s injury happened. Ms. Ford, now 65, is serving a sentence of life without parole at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla. Leigh Goodmark, the author of the book “Imperfect Victims,” said that self-defense law imagines two parties of equal strength, size, weight and physical capability. But where self-defense law really fails to capture a woman’s experience is around the question of imminence. For women like Ms. Ford, Ms. Ayobi and many others, killing their way out of a relationship was an act of salvation — for themselves, for their children.

The Hunter Biden case is an unexpected career turn for David C. Weiss, a tough, workmanlike prosecutor and commercial lawyer whose stubborn competitiveness earned him a reputation as a hard man to strike out in local softball leagues. Appointed by President Donald J. Trump, the low-key U.S. attorney for Delaware was held over in his job by the Biden administration to shield the Justice Department from accusations of political meddling. Mr. Weiss grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs, attending Cheltenham High School, whose graduates include Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, the Hall of Fame slugger Reggie Jackson and the conservative commentator Mark Levin. After completing law school at Widener University in Wilmington, Del., he worked two long stints as a prosecutor in the Delaware U.S. attorney’s office on an array of cases. Those included an investigation of a businessman who pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations after illegally bundling contributions for President Biden’s failed 2008 bid for the White House.

LISBON, May 2 (Reuters) - Portugal's infrastructure minister submitted his resignation on Tuesday as a scandal around state-owned airline TAP widened, just four months after his predecessor resigned over the same issue, but the prime minister said he would keep him in the job. Galamba's predecessor, Pedro Nuno Santos, resigned in December in the wake of a scandal involving an irregular severance payment to a former executive board member of TAP. Ourmières-Widener has since been fired after an official inspection found that the severance was illegal. On Sunday, Costa said that neither he nor any member of the government had given orders to SIS to recover the laptop. LISBON, April 21 (Reuters) - Portugal's government fired the chief executive of flag carrier TAP last month without a legal assessment of the move, Finance Minister Fernando Medina has acknowledged, deepening a high-profile scandal around the state-owned airline. His remarks in parliament late on Thursday contradicted claims by two fellow ministers a day earlier that the government had obtained a legal opinion backing the decision. This heightens chances of the state losing a potential lawsuit by the sacked executives worth millions of euros. After Ourmières-Widener called her sacking "illegal", the main opposition Social Democrats warned that unless the decision had proper legal backing, the state could lose an eventual court dispute. In a tweet, Liberal Initiative party leader Rui Rocha called the situation a "festival of incoherence and total disrespect for parliament".
But it's home to more than 60% of Fortune 500 companies, the state says, including Google parent company Alphabet, Amazon, CVS Health, and CNBC parent company Comcast. One of Delaware's major advantages is its Court of Chancery, which is a separate court system specifically for handling corporate cases. "It's a misnomer that Delaware is a tax haven for corporations," said Gigi Tewari, assistant professor at Widener University Delaware Law School. "So many people believe that, I should incorporate my business in Delaware because I'm going to save so much on corporate tax. Actually, Delaware is on the higher end for corporate tax."

Jay Martino, a barber who moved to Atlanta from Charleston, South Carolina. Blu's paternal grandmother, Karen Rolland, 57, told NBC News the boy would have been turning six last week. The body of Blu Rolland was discovered on what would have been his fifth birthday in his house in Moro, Ark. Karen told NBC News that the girl "could barely even walk" and that her clothes were soiled in urine. Ashley initially told Karen that Blu “was not at the residence,” according to Karen and the affidavit. Ashley appeared to give conflicting accounts of who buried the boy's body, according to the affidavit.
Stocks plunged earlier this month after the closely watched November jobs report showed a resilient labor market. They fell again on Thursday when weekly numbers showed the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell, indicating a still-tight labor market. “There’s an imbalance in the labor market between supply and demand,” he said, adding that it will take a “substantial period” to fix that imbalance. That path to the Fed’s 2% inflation target is through the jobs market. “There will be some softening in labor market conditions,” Powell said.
Super Saturday, the last Saturday before Christmas, could draw a record 158 million shoppers. But shoppers who take advantage of that extra time to buy are in for another treat: major discounts. "Retailers staring down time-limited inventory surpluses will do whatever they can to liquidate before the holiday season has expired." Shoppers could see major discounts on Super SaturdayBrandon Bell/Getty ImagesMajor retailers have been lamenting their inventory positions throughout 2022. The supply chain challenges that squeezed retail brands last holiday season have subsided, leaving a pandemic-induced hangover in their wake.
New York CNN —Stores are drowning in a glut of merchandise this holiday season, keeping the discounts fast and furious in the runup to Christmas. With Christmas Day falling on a Sunday, and Christmas Eve falling on the preceding Saturday, Super Saturday this year is on Dec. 17th. With eight days to go until Christmas Day, and drop-dead shipping deadlines approaching, people have a lot more buying to do. Well ahead of the final full weekend before Christmas, stores this year were already offering discounts of 50% to 60% off, and tacking on free shipping for online orders. “Retailers want to start selling for the next big holiday, which is Valentine’s Day,” said Davis.
LISBON, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Portuguese flag carrier TAP is running a reduced service as its cabin crew stage a two-day strike to demand higher salaries and better working conditions. The strike, called by the national SNPVAC union representing cabin crew staff for Dec. 8-9, had already forced TAP to cancel 360 flights. The airline said it was only operating the "minimum services" decreed by a court. SNPVAC president, Ricardo Penarroias, told Lusa news agency the majority of TAP cabin crew had decided to walk out but said they were still available to negotiate with the airline to avoid further strikes until the end of January. The ailing airline, 72.5% controlled by the Portuguese state, was saved by a 3.2 billion euro rescue plan approved by Brussels.
LISBON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Portugal's flag carrier TAP told customers on Thursday that hackers had stolen some of their personal data and published it on the dark web, although the state-owed airline said all payment details appeared to be safe. "The release of the personal data via open sources could increase the risk of their illegal use, namely aimed at obtaining other data that could compromise the digital systems in fraudulent attempts such as phishing," TAP said. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Register"There are no signs that any payments data have been retrieved from TAP systems," it said. The airline also said it had taken immediate containment measures to keep its systems working and to protect other data. TAP CEO Christine Ourmieres-Widener told reporters the airline was "very serious about client data" and said the incident was upsetting.
