A district judge in Kentucky was fatally shot in his chambers Thursday afternoon, Gov. "Sadly, I have been informed that a district judge in Letcher County was shot and killed in his chambers this afternoon," the governor wrote on X. Letcher County coroner Perry Fowler told NBC News that Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, was shot and killed. The Letcher County courthouse is in Whitesburg, about 200 miles southeast of Louisville. "Following the deadly shooting in Letcher County, our Office will collaborate with Commonwealth’s Attorney for the 27th Judicial Circuit Jackie Steele as special prosecutors in this case.

CNN —A district court judge in Kentucky was fatally shot in his chambers Thursday afternoon, Gov. The shooting took place at the Letcher County courthouse in Whitesburg, Kentucky, County Coroner Perry Fowler told CNN. The Kentucky Court of Justice is aware of the “tragic” incident in Letcher County, the court said in a statement on Facebook. “We are currently in contact with law enforcement agencies, including Kentucky State Police, and are offering our full support during this difficult time,” the statement read. CNN has reached out to the Kentucky State Police and the county’s executive judge for comment.

Reducing the red tapeIn the weeks and months after the flood, FEMA received more than 16,700 applications for disaster assistance. More than 60% of Kentucky flood victims who applied for assistance have been approved, it said. To assist with the process of getting aid, FEMA said its specialists have contacted Kentucky flood survivors directly, requesting any missing information and scheduling inspections. Beshear’s office also sent $500 grants to residents who qualified for FEMA assistance. The checks were a part of more than $12.2 million donated to the Team Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund.
