In Watertown, New, York, a former Red Lobster is being converted to a Northern Credit Union bank. And Chick-fil-A is taking over a shuttered Red Lobster in Naples, Florida. Chains like Red Lobster and TGI Fridays filed for bankruptcy this year and closed more than 175 restaurants combined. Red Lobster was driven into bankruptcy by mismanagement under a previous owner, global shrimp supplier Thai Union, while TGI Fridays fell under private equity owner TriArtisan Capital Advisors. Empty booths fill the interior of a Red Lobster restaurant on May 20, 2024 in Austin, Texas.

Some Texas residents used Whataburger's app to track power outages in the wake of Hurricane Beryl. They used its restaurant map to see which areas appeared to have regained power. 2.26 million customers lost access to power, said CenterPoint Energy, Houston's main energy provider. AdvertisementPeople in Texas have been using Whataburger's app to follow power outages in the wake of Hurricane Beryl because of a lack of information from Houston's main energy provider. Want to find a working gas station, an open restaurant or someplace with air-conditioning in East Texas after Hurricane Beryl knocked out power to millions on Monday? Users on Houston-area Facebook pages and group chats have suggested checking Whataburger’s online map to see which locations of the homegrown fast-food chain are operating. She looked at the map and headed where “there was a pretty decent concentration of Whataburgers” open. Craig Fugate, a head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency under President Barack Obama, once said: “If you get there and the Waffle House is closed? That’s where you go to work.” The concept is known as the “Waffle House index,” and has even been studied by academics — really.

CNN —The Supreme Court upheld a federal law Friday that bars guns for domestic abusers, rejecting an argument pressed by gun rights groups that the prohibition violated the Second Amendment. The 8-1 decision lands as the nation continues to grapple with gun violence and mass shootings. A roiling political debate over firearms has left Washington unable to pass new gun laws. The decision could help shore up similar federal gun regulations that have been challenged since the Supreme Court vastly expanded gun rights in 2022. Rahimi’s lawyers claimed that the Supreme Court’s blockbuster decision two years ago meant that the law on domestic violence orders could not be squared with the Constitution.

I tried chicken tenders from Popeyes, Chick-fil-A, Whataburger, Raising Cane's, KFC, Bojangles, Zaxby's, and Cook Out. Popeyes' and KFC's chicken tenders were similar in their crispy texture and flavor. Raising Cane's impressed me with its crispy-yet-juicy tenders and delicious signature sauce. AdvertisementI compared chicken tenders from eight different fast-food chains from across the country, and a lesser-known — but quickly expanding — chain took the top spot. Chicken is a hugely popular item at many fast-food chains, and some chains have built their entire business off this one menu item.

CNN —The Supreme Court is turning toward the final, frenzied weeks of its term, readying potential blockbuster decisions on abortion, guns and former President Donald Trump’s claims of absolute immunity. Trump claims ‘absolute’ immunityTrump’s appeal for immunity from special counsel Jack Smith’s election subversion charges landed at the Supreme Court late in the term and instantly overshadowed most of the docket. The Supreme Court then put that ruling on hold last year, maintaining the status quo while it decided the case. Government regulation of FacebookThe Supreme Court is confronting a series of cases at the intersection of the First Amendment and social media. The Republican governors who signed the laws said they were needed to keep the social media platforms from discriminating against conservatives.

CNN —The Supreme Court seemed poised Tuesday after oral arguments to rule in favor of a federal law that bars individuals subject to certain domestic violence restraining orders from possessing firearms. Barrett noted that domestic violence is “dangerous.” But looking to the next case she asked about “more marginal cases” that might not offend the constitution. Thomas referred to the “thin record” in the case and wondered about the fact that the domestic violence allegations had been made in a civil – not a criminal – proceeding. Due process was central to a friend of the court brief filed by the NRA in the case. “I’m just trying to understand how the Bruen test works in a situation in which there is at least some evidence that domestic violence was not considered to be subject to the kinds of regulation that it is today,” she said.

The Supreme Court is considering a section of federal law that bars an individual subject to a domestic violence restraining order from possessing a firearm. But then the Supreme Court issued its Second Amendment decision in Bruen. The 6-3 Bruen decision broke along familiar conservative-liberal ideological lines. But Justice Brett Kavanaugh, joined by Chief Justice John Roberts, wrote separately to stress that the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. The Second Amendment is “neither a regulatory straitjacket nor a regulatory blank check,” Kavanaugh said.

The Supreme Court will consider a federal law that an appeals court struck down for violating the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Photo: shawn thew/ShutterstockWASHINGTON— Zackey Rahimi pulled a gun on his ex-girlfriend in a parking lot and shot at a witness who saw them arguing, prompting a Texas family court to issue a protective order in 2020 temporarily forbidding him from possessing firearms. Rahimi ignored the order, authorities say, going on to threaten another woman with a gun, fire an AR-15 into the house of one of his narcotics customers, and shoot into the air at a Whataburger drive-through after his friend’s credit card was declined. That led to his conviction under a 1994 federal law prohibiting people under domestic-violence orders from possessing guns—and set up the latest chapter in the modern history of the Second Amendment.

CNN —Zackey Rahimi, the Texas criminal defendant challenging a federal gun law before the Supreme Court on Tuesday, said this summer that he no longer wanted to own firearms and expressed remorse for his actions that got him in trouble with the law. Rahimi, a drug dealer, was issued a restraining order in 2020 after a violent altercation with his girlfriend in Arlington, Texas. A federal grand jury indicted him, and Rahimi moved to dismiss the indictment, arguing that the law was unconstitutional. He lost his court effort, but then the Supreme Court issued the landmark Second Amendment decision. The Supreme Court will now hear the government’s appeal Tuesday.

Though its roots might be attributed to the Mexican flauta, the taquito’s origins are varyingly tied to early-20th-century California. On the Whataburger menu, a less traditional form of the taquito holds a place of distinction. What makes taquitos especially dreamy is how they weave into the rhythms of daily life. I’ve scarfed them while jogging from Terminals B — the only terminal with a Whataburger — to E through George Bush Intercontinental Airport. But what makes taquitos especially dreamy is how they weave themselves into the rhythms of daily life: I’ve picked up sacks of Whataburger taquitos en route to help paint friends’ houses.

A Texas Whataburger didn't provide reasonable break time for an employee to express breast milk, the DOL said. When the nursing mother left the premises to express milk, the company fired her, the DOL said. Employers have to give staff reasonable break time to express milk for a year after the child's birth. The corporate-owned restaurant in Lubbock, northwest Texas, failed to provide reasonable break time for the employee to express breast milk, the DOL said. And when she did leave the premises to express milk, the company terminated her, the DOL said.
