MILWAUKEE (AP) — The attorney for a former Milwaukee elections official charged with fraudulently ordering three military absentee ballots under fake names and sending them to a Republican lawmaker who embraced election conspiracy theories argued Monday in opening statements that she was a whistleblower and not a criminal. Kimberly Zapata, the former deputy director of the Milwaukee Election Commission, is on trial for misconduct in public office, a felony, and three misdemeanor counts of making a false statement to obtain an absentee ballot. In Milwaukee County Circuit Court, Zapata's defense attorney Daniel Adams told the jury that she committed no crime, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Milwaukee, home to the largest number of Democrats in Wisconsin, has been a target for complaints from Trump and his backers. Brandtjen has advocated for decertifying Biden’s 2020 win in Wisconsin for the past two years and has espoused conspiracy theories supporting her position.

The letter affirms President Biden’s opposition to a cease-fire, challenging demands from hundreds of officials that Israel halt its military offensive in the Gaza Strip. Israel’s government and Mr. Biden have rejected such a step as incompatible with Israel’s goal of destroying Hamas. The newer letter was delivered to Mr. Biden on Tuesday with 115 names, but its organizers continued to collect signatures until Friday. The earlier letter of dissent was delivered to Mr. Biden with a signature count but without names, although the signatories are known to that letter’s organizers. She cited an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll conducted early this month that found that half of Democrats approved of Mr. Biden’s handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

REUTERS/Lisi Niesner Acquire Licensing RightsBERLIN, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Germany's wind power expansion is facing an unexpected roadblock: builders need permits to transport the heavy turbines down the country's roads, and they are waiting months to get them. "Assuming nothing changes, it could cost 115 million euros extra by the end of the year," Felix Rehwald, a spokesperson for wind turbine manufacturer Enercon, told Reuters. Transport permits are needed to drive heavy loads over bridges and highways. The cost of applications had jumped to more than 1,000 euros per permit in 2021 from 100 euros, Nordex said.

Taking up a specific role that the U.S. could not have fulfilled, this was Beijing's first foray into Middle East mediation, an area that for the past few decades was largely occupied by Washington. "I think China was a good partner to do this. I think they're the right people," he said, noting that China invests heavily in Saudi Arabia and is its top trading partner. Chinese President, Xi Jinping (L) is welcomed by Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud (R) at the Palace of Yamamah in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on December 8, 2022. And not just economically, as it already exports an immense amount of goods to the Middle East and is the largest importer of Saudi oil – but politically.

Alaska canceled the Bering Sea snow crab fishing season for the first time ever on Monday. The snow crab stock looked promising in recent years, sparking hope amid the steep decade-long decline of Alaskan king crab. Yereth Rosen/ReutersScientists need to conduct further research to determine what exactly caused this year's snow crab population crash. Snow crabs had a baby boom, then disappearedA fisherman holds a snow crab in Kjoellefjord, Norway, on November 1, 2017. "Management of Bering Sea snow crab must now focus on conservation and rebuilding given the condition of thestock.
For the first time, crews in Alaska won't be braving ice and sea spray to pluck snow crab from the Bering Sea. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game canceled the snow crab season earlier this week after a catastrophic population crash of the sizable crustaceans. "It's going to be life-changing, if not career-ending, for people," said Dean Gribble Sr., a 63-year-old crab boat captain who has fished for "opies" — snow crab — since the late 1970s. In summer, many small snow crab make their habitat in a cold pool that forms on the Bering seafloor. The newspaper was the first to report the snow crab season closure.
