Multiple landslides triggered by torrential rains in southern India have killed 49 people, and many others are feared trapped under the debris, officials said Tuesday, with rescue operations being hampered by bad weather. PM Manoj, press secretary to the Kerala chief minister, said the landslides had killed at least 49 people so far. "We are trying every way to rescue our people," state Health Minister Veena George said. Kerala is prone to heavy rains, flooding and landslides. India regularly has severe floods during the monsoon season, which runs between June and September and brings most of South Asia's annual rainfall.

Whitaker would go on to earn the nickname “Snakeman of India,” and spend more than six decades dedicated to reptile research and conservation. His field work with snakes and crocodiles ultimately led his conservation efforts to help save India’s rainforests. We tell people when they’re working in the field, when they’re doing agriculture, use a stick. Romulus Whitaker teaches the next generation about reptiles at his conservation organization, Agumbe Rainforest Research Station, in southern India. And it’s wonderful to realize that dozens, if not hundreds, of young people have continued to do wonderful work with reptiles.

My family and I spent two days in the mountain town of Munnar during a trip through southern India. We visited tea plantations and a national park and spent the night at a boutique hotel. The scenery and relaxing atmosphere made Munnar one of the most beautiful places I've visited. We spent a week by the beach in Kovalam, Christmas Day aboard a private houseboat, and two days seeking refuge from the blistering heat in the mountain town of Munnar. Renowned for its rolling miles of geometric tea plantations shadowed by impressive mountain ranges, Munnar is one of the greenest and most peaceful places I've ever visited.

A tiny frog baffled scientists by growing a mushroom on its side. Whether the frog continued to live with the mushroom on its side will remain a mystery. Rao's intermediate golden-backed frog is a small frog that is endemic to India. "When I first observed the frog with the mushroom, I was amazed and intrigued by the sight," Lohit told CNN. "To the best of our knowledge, never has a mushroom sprouting from the flank of a live frog been documented," the authors said in their paper.

Read Your Way Through Kerala, India

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books. If you arrive in Kerala from elsewhere in India, you’ll feel as though you’ve landed in a different country — “God’s own country,” as Keralites like to say. Not surprisingly, the Gulf has shaped Kerala’s culture and literature. The territory sits between the Indian Ocean and the Western Ghats, the mountain range that runs parallel to the coast. I think it’s responsible for the fluid facial movements that allow Malayalis to convey volumes without uttering a word.
