With his jolting unexpected statement that sending Western troops to Ukraine “should not be ruled out,” President Emmanuel Macron of France has shattered a taboo, ignited debate, spread dismay among allies and forced a reckoning on Europe’s future. For an embattled leader who loathes lazy thinking, longs for a Europe of military strength and loves the limelight, this was typical enough. BIIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The mother of a woman killed near the University of Alabama has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in federal court against current Charlotte Hornets rookie Brandon Miller and two other men. Decarla Raietta Heard filed the suit Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama Western Division against Miller, former Crimson Tide player Darius Miles and another man, Michael Davis. Both Miles and Davis are charged with capital murder while Miller was described as a cooperating witness. Miller and fellow freshman Jaden Bradley, who has since transferred to Arizona, were also placed at the scene. According to police testimony, Miller brought Miles his gun.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Criminal charges were dropped Thursday against Las Vegas Aces player Riquna Williams after the alleged victim in a July domestic violence incident at their home stopped cooperating with prosecutors ahead of a preliminary hearing to determine if the case should go to trial. Williams’ attorney, Brandon Albright, told reporters that Williams hopes to rejoin the team for WNBA playoffs that begin next week. “It’s our hope that in short order she’ll be able to join her team,” Albright said. Sliding lumber prices and softer consumer demand hit sales at Home Depot in the first quarter. Framing lumber prices dropped 64% in a year, while sales for patio furniture and grills softened. Shares of Home Depot fell as much as 3.9% to an intraday low of $277.10, the weakest price since late October. Lumber prices have also dramatically come off highs hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. Comparable sales fell by 4.5% in the quarter ended April 30 and declined by 4.6% at US stores.

Ultra-high net worth families are moving from northern to southern states and are settling in multiple locations, and some financial advisers have followed suit by splitting their time across multiple offices, UBS said. The bank's top markets for wealth management include Atlanta, Colorado, Florida and Texas, alongside traditional hubs in the Northeast like New York and Boston.
