The success of so many 2020 election deniers in Republican primaries this year demonstrates that Trump’s ongoing campaign of election lies continues to have a strong hold on his party. Even four years later, candidates’ views on the 2020 election are relevant in important practical ways. Lake also baselessly advocated the imprisonment of Katie Hobbs, who was Arizona’s election chief during the 2020 election and went on to defeat Lake in the 2022 race for governor. Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, speaks during an interview at an Economic Club of Washington event in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2021. Manchin's move was first reported by longtime West Virginia radio host Hoppy Kercheval. The deadline for an independent to register to run for office in West Virginia this year is Aug. 1, according to the secretary of state's office. Manchin won a full Senate term in 2012 and a second term in 2018. In 2020, Trump captured nearly 70% of the vote in West Virginia.

CNN —West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice will win the state’s Republican US Senate primary, CNN projects, positioning the two-term governor as the clear favorite to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin in the deep-red state. The West Virginia Senate seat has long been seen as the most likely to flip this cycle and will be key to GOP hopes of winning the Senate this November. National Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, largely coalesced in the West Virginia Republican primary around Justice, who was barred by term limits from seeking reelection as governor. Still, in the closing weeks, the Senate contest turned bitter as Justice and Mooney traded sharp jabs on air.

All 11 House Democrats spoke during a lengthy debate Wednesday and voted against the bill. His stance on fossil fuels put him at odds with his party and he was frequently blamed for single-handedly quashing some of the Biden administration's most ambitious climate policy goals. Even as West Virginia overwhelmingly voted for former President Donald Trump in the 2016 and 2020 elections, Manchin easily won reelection in 2018. With Manchin gone, his successor will almost certainly be a Republican — most likely West Virginia Gov. Thanks to his GOP credentials and embrace of Trump, he's even less likely to be a climate ally than Manchin. Democrats, whose Senate majority is already slim, could lose that Senate seat for the foreseeable future — making any climate bills that much harder to pass.

The moderate West Virginia Democrat said Wednesday that he would never want to be a “spoiler” who contributed to getting any other candidate elected. Manchin said it would be “dangerous” to give Trump another term. “Because I Endorsed Big Jim Justice of West Virginia for the U.S. Senate, and he has taken a commanding lead, Democrat Joe Manchin has decided not to seek re-election. Manchin would have had a difficult path to reelection as the only remaining Democratic statewide officeholder in West Virginia, likely running against either GOP U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney or Gov. Manchin has long been friendly with No Labels, which has already begun holding private conversations with potential presidential nominees, Manchin among them.

The idea that either party could pick up six Senate seats in a single election seems crazy today, when only a handful of seats are viewed as truly competitive. The country and West Virginia changed around ManchinJust before Manchin arrived in the Senate, there were two Democrats representing West Virginia and two Republicans representing Arizona. One person who is running to replace Manchin, West Virginia Gov. While they are on defense in key races across the country, Democrats’ two remotely plausible pickup opportunities, in Florida and Texas, are also states that went for Trump. Meanwhile, now that he’s not running for reelection, Manchin wants to take his brand on the road.

But the West Virginia senator’s Thursday announcement that he won’t seek reelection next year only refreshed a perennial question arising from his savvy instinct for accumulating power: What exactly is he up to? Second, the announcement immediately stoked speculation that Manchin is mulling a third-party presidential bid. Manchin’s decision to quit Washington comes as a formidable potential Republican challenger, West Virginia Gov. And if Manchin can’t win in the MAGA stronghold of West Virginia, it’s impossible to believe any other Democrat can. West Virginia was once a Democratic bastion, however.

Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) speaks at the 2023 Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California, U.S., May 1, 2023. Senator Joe Manchin, a maverick Democrat who has often bucked party leadership, told a radio station in his home state of West Virginia on Thursday that he is "thinking seriously" about leaving the party. "I'm not a Washington Democrat," Manchin said in the interview on Talkline with Hoppy Kercheval, a West Virginia Metro News show. Manchin and Democratic-turned-independent colleague Senator Kyrsten Sinema have been thorns in top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer's side since the party won its majority in 2020. West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, a former Democrat-turned Republican, began his campaign in April for the Republican nomination to seek Manchin's seat.

Should Manchin seek another term, he would likely face a serious challenge from Governor Jim Justice who is seeking the Republican Party nomination in the Senate race. Meanwhile, Manchin has not swatted away reporters' questions over whether he might consider what would be a long-shot run for the White House as an independent candidate. Trump, a 77-year-old former president, leads a crowded field of Republican presidential aspirants and many voters express worries about 80-year-old President Joe Biden seeking a second term. With more than a decade in Congress, Manchin at times has complicated legislative initiatives being pushed by his party leaders. But Democratic leaders have treaded softly as Manchin also has been key to the party holding onto its Senate majority.

They have reason to be hopeful: Democrats face a daunting 2024 Senate map that puts them on defense in 23 of the cycle's 34 races, including multiple seats considered ripe for GOP challenges. The grim outlook has some Senate Democrats considering retirement, even after the caucus expanded to a 51-49 majority following a better-than-expected showing in the midterms. Jim Justice, reportedly the state's richest man and one of its favored contenders for the Senate race. But the 2024 Senate race in Ohio is currently considered a toss-up, as Republicans have made significant gains in the state in the last two election cycles. Sabato's Crystal Ball and the Cook Political Report both say the Michigan Senate race leans Democratic.

Jim Justice has filed paperwork to run for the U.S. Senate in 2024, challenging for the seat currently held by centrist Democrat Joe Manchin, with a formal announcement expected later Thursday. Mr. Justice, 72 years old, will be competing against Rep. Alex Mooney for the GOP nomination and is seen as the early favorite in that contest.
WASHINGTON, April 27 (Reuters) - West Virginia Governor Jim Justice launched his campaign on Thursday for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, a moderate who has been a constant thorn in his party's side. Justice, 72, has repeatedly changed parties, most recently in 2017 when he switched his registration to Republican after being elected as a Democrat in 2016. Manchin has been a key vote on every major piece of legislation of Biden's tenure, as a moderate representing an increasingly conservative state. Justice, a coal-mining billionaire, would first need to win a Republican primary against U.S. Representative Alex Mooney to become his party's nominee to challenge Manchin in 2024.
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice (R) and US Senator Joe Manchin (L), Democrat of West Virginia, attend a roundtable discussion on the opioid epidemic with local and state officials at the Cabell-Huntington Health Department in Huntington, West Virginia, July 8, 2019. West Virginia's Republican governor, Jim Justice, filed official paperwork to kick off a 2024 campaign for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by incumbent Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin. If Manchin decides not to run for a third term, Democrats are widely expected to lose the seat to whichever Republican nominee emerges from West Virginia's Senate primary. A Trump campaign spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. With his seat under threat, Manchin has appeared increasingly critical of President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats.

West Virginia offers the GOP perhaps its best chance to flip a Democratic seat next year. Justice's team believes a Senate bid by the governor could make Manchin less likely to seek reelection, the GOP source told CNBC last month. Former President Donald Trump, who is deeply popular in West Virginia, backed Mooney in his most recent House election. Justice is set to announce his Senate bid at his own resort, furthering intermingling the governor's business and politics.
GOP leaders are seeking out wealthy Senate candidates to counter Democratic fundraising successes. In recent cycles, some GOP candidates have used outside spending to mitigate spending disparities. Last year, Democratic Senate nominees in the six most competitive races outraised their GOP counterparts by $288 million, per Politico. The well-known doctor poured $26.8 million of his own funds into his unsuccessful Senate campaign, according to OpenSecrets. Dolan, who put more than $10.5 million into his 2022 Senate bid, could face Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown.
Jim Justice and his family members took out $850 million in personally backed loans from the now-collapsed firm Greensill Capital. West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice wants to sell his family’s coal business, according to his lawyer and other people familiar with the matter, a move that would help resolve substantial debts in advance of a possible challenge for the U.S. Senate seat held by centrist Democrat Joe Manchin . Mr. Justice, a Republican in his second term as governor, owns a sprawling empire of coal mines, processing facilities, agricultural interests and the landmark Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. But he has endured financial difficulties in recent years, made worse after he and his family members took out $850 million in personally backed loans from the now-collapsed firm Greensill Capital.
‘We’ll be announcing the biggest tax cuts in the history of this state, hands down,’ said Gov. Jim Justice of West Virginia earlier this week. Pointing to a record budget surplus, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice said he plans to announce a major tax cut next week, joining a number of governors from both parties entering the New Year with state surpluses and big plans for tax cuts or new spending. West Virginia ended the fiscal year in June with $1.3 billion more in revenues than expected.
WASHINGTON, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Form Energy Inc, a startup hoping to make long-duration storage batteries from materials including iron to store power from renewable energy, will partner with West Virginia to build a manufacturing plant in the state, the company and politicians said on Thursday. West Virginia Governor Jim Justice and Form Energy, backed by supporters including Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures, said the plant will be built with a total investment of up to $760 million. Form Energy aims to build batteries using iron, air and water. Form says the batteries can store power for days, much longer than ones based on lithium-ion, and using less expensive materials. "The path forward is innovation, not elimination, and with this announcement West Virginia and Form Energy are doing just that," Manchin said in a statement.
