There's a common belief that lower borrowing costs benefit so-called growth stocks, as they're often capital-intensive. "History also suggests value should outperform growth, at least over the six months following the first rate cut," he said. If the economic situation becomes a "hard-landing," however, he said that growth stocks could outperform. If it normalizes (i.e., becomes more upward sloping), value should outperform growth," he said, referring to a situation where short-term rates are lower than long-term rates. "Lower multiple value stocks have greater upside and less risk than the pricier 'glamor growth' group for the foreseeable future," Ball said.

U.S. interest rate cuts are unlikely to move at an aggressive pace, say market watchers. The Fed kicked off its easing cycle with a jumbo 50 basis-point rate cut in September — but subsequent ones will be milder, they said. They highlighted the better-than-expected September jobs report, renewed worries around inflation, rising yields and an economy that's still relatively strong. How to position In that scenario — and with inflation expected to continue being sticky, it's important that investors still have exposure to commodities, said Landsberg. Christopher of Wells Fargo said if interest rates moderate and earnings are stronger than expected, market performance will broaden out further.

Buying shares of Nvidia or other semiconductor and Big Tech stocks is just one way to play the artificial intelligence theme. There's a cheaper way to play it, Sean Peche of Ranmore Fund Management told CNBC Pro Talks last week. "Most investors over the last couple of years have thought that the only way to play AI is to own Nvidia and a few of the other peers," the portfolio manager said. AI is going to help these banks, but investors are "not paying for" the AI factor given that these stocks are trading at only six times earnings, he pointed out. Shares of Nvidia are trading at around 57 times earnings.

Markets just keep rallying this year, with the S & P 500 up nearly 22% year-to-date and the Nasdaq jumping around 21%. In global stocks, the MSCI World index is around 16% higher. Meanwhile, recent data indicates that the U.S. Federal Reserve could be close to pulling off the much-discussed economic soft landing . With markets already running high, CNBC Pro screened for global stocks that have outperformed the MSCI World index, but still look cheap based on their forward price-to-earnings ratios. Goldman Sachs is the latest in a flurry of calls to upgrade China stocks after the Asian giant's recent wave of stimulus measures. Goldman predicts that Chinese stocks could even jump a further 15% to 20%, given the powerful comeback rally that has already occurred. It says the MSCI China index could have another 15% upside, and the CSI 300 index could enjoy a further 18% upside. In a Monday note, Citi also increased its price target for Chinese stocks. Following that, Wall Street started getting bullish on those stocks again, with Morgan Stanley predicting Chinese stocks are set to rally 10% and more.

Trade tensions, too, have resulted in tariffs and affected world trade in certain goods. The market for companies in this space is driven by the volume of global trade, and this so-called supply chain "complexity," Goldman noted. It sees some stocks as being able to benefit from higher supply chain "complexity." Freight-forwarding firms such as DSV , DHL Forwarding and Kuehne+Nagel are "well-placed to help their clients navigate higher complexity and shocks," Goldman said. Container lines such as Cosco, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are less directly exposed to the higher supply chain complexity, said Goldman.

Over time, riskier assets have outperformed cash and cash alternatives, said Brian Rehling, its head of global fixed income strategy. Different types of fixed income Investors can benefit from different types of fixed income in their portfolios, Citi said. But since then, both stocks and high-yield fixed income have increased in price. "Investors should consider taking advantage of any pullbacks in these asset classes to reposition overallocations to short-term fixed income," it said. Morgan Stanley says that Chinese stocks could enjoy a more "sustained rally" in the next phase — beyond a near-term jump — as they ride on the wave of stimulus measures and signals announced last week. They predict at least a 10% rally in the near term , and even more ahead. Against that backdrop, the bank indicated its preference for certain stocks that are set to benefit from easing measures. Stock screens Morgan Stanley did a few stock screens to sieve out those set to benefit. Morgan Stanley says it expected a supplementary budget to be announced in late October, supporting consumption and local government financing.

Of all Chinese internet stocks, one company has the "best risk-reward" for investors, Morgan Stanley says. Morgan Stanley raised its price target for Tencent from 450 Hong Kong dollars to 480 Hong Kong dollars ($57.80 to $61.70). Its shares have jumped since mid September, from about around 374 Hong Kong dollars to the current 424 Hong Kong dollars. As for its games unit, Morgan Stanley says the firm will enjoy "near-term catalysts," adding that there will be a "robust" pipeline, with its evergreen games set to continue netting growth. It estimates Tencent's games revenue growth could rise 13% and 10% year on year in the second half this year and in 2025, respectively.

September is a historically weak month for stocks, but the first U.S. Federal Reserve rate cut in four years meant that markets have mostly bucked the trend so far. The S & P 500 has risen around 1% month-to-date, and jumped about 8% since the end of June when stocks went through much volatility. But risks such as the U.S. election, inflation and geopolitical conditions raise the question of what the path ahead will be like for stocks. "In my view, the banking sector could win ... as should solid growth stocks – at reasonable valuations – in the healthcare and software sectors," he added. Valuations in the U.S. market look "less demanding" — if you exclude Big Tech, mega-growth stocks, which are dragging up the overall price-to-earnings multiple of the S & P 500, Webber added.

That's liquid cooling, a cooling technology used in data centers which helps to improve power and cost efficiency. "As air cooling is approaching the limit of its cooling capacity, the importance of liquid cooling is getting increasingly more pronounced … liquid cooling [is] becoming a must-have for GB200," said the bank. Nomura estimates the liquid cooling penetration rate in Nvidia's AI servers is set to rise from 8% in 2024 to 43% in 2025, and 47% in 2026. Liquid cooling systems are the solution to "power shortage pressures" in data centers, Morgan Stanley said in a previous report . Against that backdrop, Jefferies is bullish on four Asian stocks it says will be "key beneficiaries" of the liquid cooling trend.

If you had as much as a spare $1 million to invest right now, what should you buy? Balanced-to-medium risk profile With as much as $1 million to invest with, investors can buy individual securities instead of being restricted to funds, said David Dietze, managing principal and senior portfolio strategist at Peapack Private Wealth Management. "A much smaller amount leaves an investor forced to invest in funds to get adequate diversification. With one million, one could say invest $20K in fifty different stocks and be well diversified," he said. More aggressive risk profile Gambles says that taking on a more aggressive stance would mean an "all in commitment" on the themes he expects will perform, and removing any hedges against those trades.

HSBC in a Sept. 17 report examined the relationship between Fed rate cuts and copper and aluminum prices over the past 30 years. In its base case, Citi sees copper prices averaging $9,000 per ton for the rest of this year, citing U.S. election uncertainty and weak manufacturing sentiment. Energy Citi anticipates that oil will suffer renewed price weakness in 2025, with Brent falling to around $60 a barrel. Based on what happened in 2019, trade tariffs lowered global oil demand growth by 0.2 million barrels a day. A slowdown in China, among the world's largest importer and consumer of oil, has been blamed on slowing global oil demand.

One global stock stands out as a "unique play" in the Nvidia and artificial intelligence supply chain, according to Jefferies. It's German semiconductor firm SUSS MicroTec , Jefferies said in a Sept. 17 report, calling it a "hidden gem" among European semiconductor firms. The investment bank initiated coverage of the stock at a buy rating and a target price of 76 euros ($84). The firm has "multi-layered exposure" to an advanced packaging technology called Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate, said Jefferies, explaining that it's used to make AI chips. SUSS sells its products to two major high bandwidth memory suppliers and TSMC, to be used in the production of that advanced packaging.

Worries about whether artificial intelligence investments will pay off may have rocked markets recently, but Wedbush Securities tech analyst Dan Ives says the tech boom is set to continue. Nvidia shares in particular were hit in recent weeks , before rebounding last week and lifting other tech names as well. Nvidia is set to continue driving tech higher, Ives told CNBC's " Street Signs Asia " on Monday. "Everything we're seeing from … Nvidia … this party is going to continue … for the next six to eight quarters, because we're actually seeing demand accelerating," he said. Ives estimated that AI capital expenditure is set to reach around $1 trillion.

That also means that AI data centers are growing fast — as is the demand for them. That in turn is set to drive up the demand for cooling systems for data centers. We believe the demand for liquid cooling for AI data centers should sustain for the following 5-10 years, driven by continuous iteration of AI chips and rising heat dissipation requirements," Jefferies said in a Sept. 10 report. Cooling services have been said to improve power efficiency in data centers and, by extension, cost efficiency. Investors are ignoring two major risks to the market, according to Vahan Janjigian, chief investment officer at Greenwich Wealth Management. Geopolitical tensions and weak oil prices are the second risk, Janjigian said. He has been "surprised" that the Russia-Ukraine war, the Israel-Hamas conflict and weak oil prices haven't elicited a bigger reaction from the market. The International Energy Agency said in its recently monthly reports that global oil demand has been decelerating , adding that oil consumption in China — long the "engine of global oil demand growth" — contracted in April and May this year. In June, it added that Chinese oil demand contracted for a third consecutive month , driven by a slump in industrial activity.

Get out of cash — that's what many on Wall Street have been saying since expectations of rate cuts started rising earlier this year. They're now doubling down on that call, with the U.S. Federal Reserve signaling that it would finally cut rates in September. That would make cash rates less attractive than other parts of fixed income. "An easier tack from the central bank is likely to buoy risk markets like high yield fixed income and other spread product, including structured products, investment grade corporates and emerging market debt," said Robert Tipp, chief investment strategist and head of global bonds at PGIM Fixed Income. It's commonly believed that assets related to real estate, such as REITs, benefit from lower interest rates. A lower interest rate environment also increases the attractiveness of this investment in terms of the higher rental income yield offered by real estate. The rate of office use is set to increase over time , which will in turn lead to a recovery in office real estate demand, he said. "A focus on technology and life sciences market clusters should benefit Kilroy in the long run as we expect buoyant growth in these areas.
