Midway into October, the vibrant fall colors have drawn thousands of visitors to New England’s trails eager to capture the beauty of autumn. But the influx of hikers has led to concerns about overcrowding and safety, especially in popular spots in New Hampshire. State park officials are excited to see so many people enjoying the outdoors, but they urge hikers — both new and experienced — to come prepared and be respectful of nature and others on the trails. Oliver Pierson, director of forestry for Vermont’s Agency of Natural Resources, highlighted the importance of common sense and communication on busy trails. “It’s really about being respectful and enjoying both the scenery and your fellow hikers,” Pierson said.

A Massachusetts man who was suspected of fatally stabbing a woman has died after telling authorities he ingested battery acid, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday. When police found Correia in an apartment, he “told investigators that he had ingested battery acid and suffered a medical episode,” the office said in a statement. Her nephew said Goncalves was a mother of two and grandmother of a 2-year-old child, NBC Boston reported. Brockton is a city of around 105,000 residents around 20 miles south of downtown Boston.
Brian Kemp to become the state’s first Black governor — she’d also be the first Black woman in the country’s history to hold a governor seat. In Maryland, Rep. Anthony Brown could be the state’s first Black attorney general if he defeats Republican Michael Peroutka. Smaller historic races include Rep. Karen Bass’ bid to become Los Angeles’ first Black woman mayor. Flowers would be the first Black woman to hold the office in Alabama, and she’s already made history as the first Black woman from either major party to win the nomination for governor. If successful, she would be the first Black woman elected to the chamber in the state’s history.
