All three of this year’s most punctual airlines are members of the SkyTeam alliance: Aeromexico, Saudia, and Delta Air Lines, in that order. In Latin America, Colombia-based Copa was the most punctual airline, winning that honor for the second year in a row. Riyadh King Khalid International Airport (RUH) took top honors in the large airport category as well as the overall title. For medium-size airports, the top three were Panama Tocumen International Airport (PTY), Osaka Itami International Airport (ITM) and Brasilia International Airport (BSB). In the small airport category, the most punctual ones were Guayaquil Jose Joaquin de Olmedo Intl Airport (GYE), Quito Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) and El Salvador International Airport (SAL).

Delta Air Lines had to suspend hot meal service on more than 200 flights out of its Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport hub over the past several days because of a "food safety issue." Delta said that operations from the facility were shut down and hot food will be managed by other kitchens. "During a recent inspection at a DTW kitchen, Delta's catering partner was notified of a food safety issue within the facility," Delta said in a statement on Sunday. "Delta and its catering partner immediately shut down hot food production and subsequently suspended all activity from the facility. Hot food and other onboard provisioning will be managed from other facilities."

The reality of the American air travel system is that powerful forces keep passengers flying the same carriers, even after service meltdowns like Delta just suffered. For passengers who live near one of the hubs where Delta controls most of the flights, such as Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis or Salt Lake City, choices are even more limited. But by Monday, the problems were mostly limited to Delta as other businesses were back to normal, adding to the frustration of its passengers. Delta canceled more than 4,400 flights from July 19 to 21, according to tracking service FlightAware.
