CNN —Barbra Streisand is paying tribute to her “A Star Is Born” costar Kris Kristofferson, who died over the weekend at age 88. In a post on Instagram, Streisand reflected on their creative time together. “The first time I saw Kris performing at the Troubadour club in L.A. I knew he was something special,” Streisand wrote. The film’s song “Evergreen,” performed by Streisand and Kristofferson, won the Academy Award for best original song.

Los Angeles AP —Kris Kristofferson, a Rhodes scholar with a deft writing style and rough charisma who became a country music superstar and A-list Hollywood actor, has died. Kristofferson died at his home in Maui, Hawaii, on Saturday, family spokesperson Ebie McFarland said in an email. Kristofferson, who could recite William Blake from memory, wove intricate folk music lyrics about loneliness and tender romance into popular country music. “There’s no better songwriter alive than Kris Kristofferson,” Nelson said during a November 2009 award ceremony for Kristofferson held by BMI. Hank Thompson, another country music star who grew up in Waco in the 30s, said border radio stations were the only stations where one could listen to country music most of the time. But the legacy of border radio stations continued to live on in the country music they helped popularize, as well as its cousin genres. According to American honky-tonk star Webb Pierce, country music "might not have survived if it hadn't been for border radio."

Dear listeners,Over the weekend, I spent some time at the WFMU Record and CD Fair — a New York institution returning in person for the first time since 2019. A fund-raiser for the great, listener-supported radio station, this year’s Record Fair featured over 100 dealers hawking vinyl and other musical sundries at the Knockdown Center in Queens. That lingering pang in my shoulder, though, meant I left with a pretty decent record haul — which I used to create today’s playlist. Some people go to record fairs ready to drop big bucks on rare finds and coveted collectibles. When I added a $3 copy of Waylon Jennings’s “Greatest Hits” to my pile, I thought I’d checked the condition of the LP.

The bear who does cocaine in ‘Cocaine Bear’Like “Snakes on a Plane” and “Sharknado,” “Cocaine Bear” seeks to entice an audience with an amusingly trashy title. But the title is by far the most noteworthy element of this lumpy horror-comedy. One of those “inspired by true events”—i.e., almost wholly fictitious—stories, “Cocaine Bear” takes place in 1985, when (as a news clip of that era featuring Tom Brokaw tells us) a cocaine trafficker fell to his death from a plane in Tennessee while ditching duffel bags full of the stuff. In real life, some of the bags landed in the woods of Georgia, where a black bear ingested the drugs and died. In legend, the animal was stuffed, put on display, at one point owned by country superstar Waylon Jennings , and wound up entertaining shoppers in a Kentucky mall.

CNN —If you’ve seen the astonishing trailer for “Cocaine Bear” making the rounds on Twitter, you might have questions about the film’s claim that it is “inspired by true events.” But the story is indeed based on the true story of a bear who overdosed on cocaine in the 1980s. In the film, the bear goes on a cocaine-fueled killing spree after its drug binge. The black bear was found dead near a duffel bag and 40 packages of cocaine, ripped open and scattered over the hillside. It’s unclear from the AP report exactly how much cocaine the bear consumed – but the duffel bag would have originally contained around 88 pounds of the powerful drug. The Kentucky for Kentucky Fun Mall in Lexington claims to have the stuffed remains of the "Cocaine Bear" on display.
