“There’s huge investments going into (AI) in the Middle East,” said Stephen Anderson, Middle East strategy and markets leader at PwC, speaking to CNN at last week’s Global AI Summit (GAIN) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Energy demand from AI, data centers and cryptocurrencies could double by 2026, according to the International Energy Agency. Gulf states are investing heavily in AI as they look to diversify their economies. Last year, the UAE unveiled a tool called Jais and Saudi Arabia has developed the Arabic chatbot ALLaM. Challenge of governanceOne of the major hurdles with the development of AI is public perception and governance: how should AI and data be regulated safely, securely, ethically and fairly?

That's because Augusta National, undeniably beautiful and impeccably maintained, is deceivingly difficult, with subtle defenses not always obvious to the casual observer. To get fans closer to the Masters than ever before, IBM worked with the Masters digital team to infuse generative AI into the 2024 Masters app. First, these models need to be fueled by an organization's trusted data. In tech industry circles, there's a tendency to count parameters or tokens to quantify the power of an AI model. We can manage the lifecycle of their AI models, from curating their trusted data, to training open-source foundation models, and managing and monitoring the results.

IBM aims to be "client zero" of the AI products it sells to clients, marketing chief Jonathan Adashek said. He said AI has augmented the work IBM staffers do and even made its ads more effective. In April 2020, our CEO Arvind Krishna said IBM is going to be the leading hybrid cloud and AI company. That means acquisitions, that means divestitures, that means prioritizing some areas of work over others. Dropping 'hybrid work' from the return-to-office vernacularI think a lot of what drives productivity in the wrong direction is when you get people not focused on the must-haves and spending more time on the nice-to-dos.

The criticality of trust is even clearer today as generative AI is changing the landscape of what's possible with AI. For example, generative AI models can produce highly believable, well-structured responses so it can be hard to identify an incorrect response without the right subject matter expertise. Generative AI does not have test-retest reliability, meaning you can ask the same question many times to an LLM and get different answers each time. Many business leaders are feeling pressure from investors, clients, employees, and others to accelerate their adoption of AI, including generative AI, but they're weighing the urgency to act against the potential risks. AI governance is how you define policies and establish accountability throughout the AI lifecycle.

IBM reported second-quarter earnings on Wednesday that topped analysts' estimates as the company expanded its gross margin. Revenue: $15.48 billion, versus $15.58 billion expected, according to Refinitiv. Net income for the quarter rose 13% to $1.6 billion from $1.4 billion, or $1.72 per share, a year earlier. IBM reiterated on Wednesday that it expects between 3% and 5% revenue growth through the end of the year in constant currency. The company's infrastructure division, which includes its mainframe sales, declined 14.6% to $3.6 billion in revenue.

July 19 (Reuters) - Enterprise software provider IBM's (IBM.N) second-quarter revenue fell short of Wall Street expectations on Wednesday, bogged down by tepid spending from businesses. Revenue growth in the U.S. and Western Europe was "muted" as the company wrapped up the cycle for its mainframe computers it launched last year, Chief Financial Officer James Kavanaugh said in an interview. Total revenue for the quarter ended June 30 fell 0.4% to $15.48 billion compared with analysts' average estimate of $15.58 billion, according to Refinitiv data. Analysts expect watsonx to aid the software business, which grew 7.2% to $6.6 billion during the reported quarter, thanks to enterprise digitization projects. Net income rose to $1.58 billion, or $1.72 per share, compared with $1.39 billion, or $1.53 per share, a year earlier.

IBM is hoping to take advantage of the boom in generative AI technologies that can write human-like text more than a decade after Watson, its first major AI system, failed to gain market traction. One of the barriers the old Watson system faced was high costs, which IBM is hoping to address this time. Khare said using its own chips could lower cloud service costs because they are very power efficient. IBM has joined other tech giants such as Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google and Amazon.com (AMZN.O) in designing its own AI chips. Instead, IBM's chip aims to be cost-efficient at what AI industry insiders call inference, which is the process of putting an already trained AI system to use making real-world decisions.

About 15 months ago, IBM sold its Watson Health unit for an undisclosed amount to private equity firm Francisco Partners. Now, Watson has given way to WatsonX, and IBM is trying to ride the latest boom in AI. The platform includes a feature for AI-generated code, an AI governance toolkit, and a library of thousands of large-scale AI models, trained on language, geospatial data, IT events and code, according to a release. IBM is partnering with HuggingFace, the buzzy AI startup and open source platform that reached a $2 billion valuation last year. "We allow an enterprise to use their own code to adapt the model to how they want to run their playbooks and their code," Krishna said.
OAKLAND, California, May 9 (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N) on Tuesday launched watsonx, a new artificial intelligence and data platform to help companies integrate AI in their business. The new AI platform launch comes over a decade after IBM's software called Watson got attention for winning the game show Jeopardy. Fast forward a decade, chatbot ChatGPT's overnight success is making AI adoption at companies a focus, and IBM is looking to grab new business. This time, the lower cost of implementing the large language AI models means the chances of success are high, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna told Reuters ahead of the company's annual Think conference. IBM said companies can use the watsonx platform to train and deploy AI models, automatically generate code using natural language and use various large language models built for different purposes such as chemical creation or climate change modeling.
