United Airlines is testing a "Touchless ID" plan at O'Hare which doesn't require a physical ID. The new meetings with the FAA, airlines, pilots, airport vehicle drivers and others will take place by Dec. 31. On Thursday, a U.S. Senate Commerce subcommittee will hold a hearing on recent incidents that raised questions about FAA air traffic control operations. The hearing will include FAA Air Traffic Organization head Tim Arel, National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy, National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) President Rich Santa, Air Lines Pilots Association President Jason Ambrosi and former FAA administrator Randy Babbitt. The FAA said in September it was seeking recommendations on making it compulsory for airports to include cockpit-alerting technologies that could improve runway safety.

REUTERS/Elizabeth FrantzWASHINGTON, Aug 7 (Reuters) - U.S. government offices in the Washington area closed early on Monday due to a severe storm threat and tornado watch that was disrupting air travel. The National Weather Service said the Washington, D.C., area was under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. Libraries, museums, the National Zoo, pools and other municipal and federal services in the Washington area were also closing early. The tornado watch covers Maryland, Washington and much of Pennsylvania and Virginia. FlightAware, a flight tracking site, said more than 1,100 U.S. flights had been canceled, including 75 at Washington Reagan National Airport, or 17% of flights.

The White House said this week it opposed a House bill provision that would rescind a 2012 Transportation Department regulation requiring airlines to advertise full fares including government fees and taxes. The House measure would bar airlines from charging fees to allow families to sit together on flights. The House opted to retain pilot training rules that were adopted after a 2009 fatal passenger airplane crash near Buffalo.

WASHINGTON, July 18 (Reuters) - Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) said on Tuesday it will support legislation to add seven new round trip flights a day at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, an issue that has been fiercely contested by major U.S. airlines. American Airlines (AAL.O), United Airlines (UAL.O) and Alaska Airlines (ALK.N) have strongly opposed adding flights to airport arguing to it would boost congestion and lead to more delays, while Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) strongly supports adding more flights to boost competition. In the 1960s, the federal government restricted flights at Reagan National to manage congestion and delays at the airport and direct longer flights to Dulles. The so-called “perimeter rule” limits most non-stop flights serving Reagan National to a distance of 1,250 miles. Congress previously exempted 20 round-trip flights to airports more than 1,250 miles from Reagan National (DCA).

The Justice Department on Tuesday sued to block JetBlue Airways ' $3.8 billion proposed takeover of budget carrier Spirit Airlines , the Biden administration's latest attempt to prevent industry consolidation. Spirit Airlines agreed to sell itself to JetBlue last summer after a long battle for the carrier between JetBlue and Frontier Airlines . A JetBlue-Spirit combination would be the first major U.S. airline merger since Alaska Airlines' takeover of Virgin America in 2016. The Justice Department at the time required Alaska to scale back its code share with American Airlines to clear the deal. Separately, JetBlue is awaiting a ruling on its Northeast partnership with American Airlines, which the Justice Department sued to undo in 2021.

At the start of a three-week trial in Boston, Justice Department attorney William Jones said the Northeast Alliance, unveiled in July 2020, is a "de facto merger" of American and JetBlue's operations in Boston and New York. Hayes acknowledged that he had been critical of previous joint ventures similar to the Northeast Alliance. The trial started after a week in which U.S. judges ruled against the government in two antitrust fights: sugar and insurance. JetBlue is pursuing a $3.8 billion acquisition of low-cost rival Spirit Airlines (SAVE.N), subject to antitrust review. Hayes has said that no matter how the fight over the Northeast Alliance ends, it would be good for JetBlue's effort to buy Spirit.
