The Biden administration is taking executive action to protect undocumented spouses of American citizens — a move that would shield about 500,000 immigrants from deportation. The White House announced the election-year policy Tuesday, framing it as "new action to keep families together." Lawmakers have been briefed on the plan and at least some have been invited to the White House for the announcement, sources said. The program would also make it easier for some undocumented immigrants to get a green card and a path to U.S. citizenship. Sources also say that the undocumented spouses would be allowed to obtain work permits on a case-by-case basis.

Ron Edmonds, a photographer for The Associated Press who won a Pulitzer Prize for a dramatic series of pictures of the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan and the takedown of the gunman outside a Washington hotel in 1981, died on Friday in Falls Church, Va. His wife, Grace Feliciano Edmonds, said he died in a hospital from pneumonia linked to a bacterial infection. It was only Mr. Edmonds’s second day on the White House beat when he was assigned to cover a speech by President Reagan to an A.F.L.-C.I.O. group at the Washington Hilton on March 30, 1981. After rushing to leave the hotel ahead of the president, Mr. Edmonds positioned himself on the other side of the presidential limousine, expecting that Reagan would do little more than wave to onlookers before returning to the White House.

Four years ago, he was able to assail Trump’s time in office from his position as a challenger. CNN —Joe Biden landed a major union endorsement Wednesday from North America’s Building Trades Unions, whose leaders say the president has his infrastructure bill largely to thank for it. The backing from NABTU, which has 3 million members nationwide, is more enthusiastic than its 2020 backing of Biden. That’s raised questions about the political future of the next generation of union members. A group of news organizations asked a federal court Monday to reveal the special counsel's list of 84 witnesses who are prohibited from speaking with former President Donald Trump about the facts of his criminal classified documents case. The request came three days after special counsel Jack Smith, who led the probe into Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents, moved to file the witness list under seal with the court. Smith noted in a court filing Friday that the Department of Justice has shared a list of those witnesses with the lawyers for Trump and Nauta. The coalition pointed to the First Amendment, common law and the principles of an open judicial system in their appeal to see the witness list. "The filing of the list of potential witnesses in this case is a highly significant initial step in this extraordinary prosecution," they wrote.
