Republicans have averted a potential disaster in Nebraska, with NBC News projecting that Sen. Deb Fischer has won re-election to a third term. Fischer faced a surprisingly competitive challenge from independent Dan Osborn, a mechanic and union leader who cast her as a creature of Washington. Fischer's win gives the Republicans 51 Senate seats, putting them over the threshold needed for control of the chamber, NBC News projects. But it has been nearly 20 years since the state elected a Democrat to the Senate, and Republicans typically carry statewide races with ease. Fischer was elected to the Senate in 2012 in a resounding victory over Democratic former Sen. Bob Kerrey, who had also been governor.

CNN —The FBI on Monday reported that violent crime dropped across the US last year, registering the steepest annual decline in murders in decades. But the report was almost entirely ignored by right-wing media outlets, which have pushed a false narrative that crime is surging under President Joe Biden. Overall crime fell by 3% and property crime fell by 2.4%. The routine release of FBI data comes just weeks before a high-stakes presidential election in which perceptions of crime and safety have become a key political flashpoint. The decision by right-wing media outlets to bury the report underscores the disconnect between public perception on the issue of crime and the reality of falling crime rates.

CNN —Ex-President Donald Trump responded to a second apparent assassination attempt that he blames on incendiary political rhetoric by inflaming the situation even more. He accused President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris of inviting assassins to target him when they warn that he is a threat to democracy. But Trump’s claims that Biden and Harris bear direct culpability underscore the extreme nature of his own political instincts. Biden and Trump had a telephone conversation, and the president conveyed his relief that his erstwhile rival was safe. And when he refused to concede that he lost the 2020 election, Trump called supporters to Washington, DC, and told them to “fight like hell” or they wouldn’t have a country anymore.

Unity, after all, has been a key message espoused by President Joe Biden. "I had all prepared an extremely tough speech, really good, all about the corrupt, horrible administration," Trump told the Post. Just over 26 minutes into his speech, Trump was praising his supporters and family when he veered abruptly back into attacks on his opponents. Trump portrays unity — while insulting his opponentsTrump, now officially the Republican nominee, began his speech in line with the unity message. "I look at unity, and it's obviously an opportunity to bring the country together," said Chris LaCivita, a senior campaign aide.

Thousands of Trump supporters in Milwaukee on Monday night hailed their leader, elevating him from MAGA superhero to saint-like status. For Trump’s millions of American fans, Monday night was a validation of their faith in God and the ex-president and the righteousness of his mission. A list of Black Republican and female Republican lawmakers gave speeches, offering a somewhat misleading perception that the GOP has a deep and diverse bench. One GOP source said speechwriters at the convention had thrown out all their pre-written material for the week’s top speakers and started again. The ex-president has a new chance at politics and life in the wake of his assassination attempt.

Many of the questions that predated Saturday evening’s assassination attempt have largely faded into the background as former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden and their respective allies rush to adapt their campaigns to the new landscape. “Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now,” Trump told the Washington Examiner of his convention speech following the assassination attempt. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” he said. The former president has, so far, been restrained in his response to the attempt on his life. Other members of his party have not, with some immediately suggesting – without evidence – that the alleged gunman was driven to act by heated campaign rhetoric.

The failed attempt to assassinate Trump is already impacting his Thursday speech. He says he'd planned an "extremely tough speech" focused on Biden but will now seek unity. "It is a chance to bring the country together," Trump said. AdvertisementIn the wake of a failed assassination attempt at a rally on Saturday, former President Donald Trump says he's torn up the speech he originally planned to deliver at the Republican National Convention. Trump is scheduled to deliver his speech in Milwaukee on Thursday, when he formally accepts the GOP nomination for President of the United States.

The uproar over the Trump assassination attempt may pause the intraparty rebellion against Biden for now, especially as he assumes his role as the leader of a nation in sudden crisis. In a nation that was already deeply divided, the core vote for both Trump and Biden was probably locked in. There can be no justification for an assassination attempt on a candidate — an assault on democracy. Many Republican politicians issued calls for calm and an easing of political rhetoric after the shooting — as did Democrats. And Johnson accompanied his calls for calm by implying that Democrats — in advancing their arguments against Trump — had somehow abetted the assassination attempt.

In that debate, Trump repeatedly attacked Biden and consistently spoke over him, as well as antagonized the moderators. Leading up to debate week, Trump has downplayed the importance of preparation. “It’s very hard to prepare,” Trump told the Washington Examiner. Comparatively, Trump posted 26 video clips from the upstart internet streamer Right Side Broadcasting Network, 11 videos from the pro-Trump cable channel Newsmax, and 5 from the far-right Real America’s Voice. My newsroom colleagues Jason Horowitz and Gaia Pianigiani have a lovely report this week about family-friendly policies in the Italian province of Alto Adige-South Tyrol, which has the highest birthrate of any region in an aging, depopulating Italy. Their story is a portrait not just of a particular policy matrix but also the culture that policy can help foster. Some of what Carney describes is a set of habits that’s beyond the reach of policy. (I don’t think there’s much the government can do to persuade parents to “Have Lower Ambitions for Your Kids,” to select one of his more striking chapter titles.) But some of the sense of overwhelmingness that comes with modern parenting seems like it could be mitigated, not just through a once-a-year benefit or tax credit, but also through small consistent signals of support: the family discount on groceries, the convenient in-home child care option, the open play space, the flexible work space.

Its parent company, Trump Media & Technology Group, merged with Digital World Acquisition Corp. and began trading under the ticker DJT on Tuesday. Most of the content on Truth Social is highly political, and my feed was littered with fellow "Truthsayers" spouting conspiracy theories. CNN —The Republican operative who accused American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp of sexual assault last year received a significant financial settlement in exchange for dropping his lawsuit against Schlapp, multiple sources familiar with the case told CNN. The $480,000 settlement was paid to Carlton Huffman through an insurance policy, according to a source familiar with the details. The original lawsuit filed by Huffman against Schlapp asked for more than $9 million in damages. Huffman told CNN that Schlapp made unwanted sexual advances, including groping and fondling his groin without consent, on the ride back from two Atlanta-area bars on October 19, 2022. A former official on the Walker campaign told CNN he does not believe the settlement exonerates Schlapp.

Three years later, there are considerable questions about what’s been accomplished with all that money. Conservatives who see Kendi as the living embodiment of the style of social justice activism they deride as “wokeness” are, naturally, gleeful. NEW YORK (AP) — The departure of Rupert Murdoch as the leader of Fox’s parent company and his News Corp. media holdings after decades at the helm is unlikely to have as much of an impact on conservative media overall as it would have a decade ago. “I think if Rupert Murdoch had stepped down in 2000 it would have had a much greater impact," said Howard Polskin, whose website The Righting.com monitors conservative media. One such system fills a space with a dense, dry fog to reduce visibility and disorient criminals. In particular, the system was so effective at curbing cigarette theft from UK convenience stores, the company said, that thieves began targeting stores without the tech. Large retailers including Target and Dick's Sporting Goods have blamed a rise in retail theft for taking a larger bite out of profits, as well as jeopardizing the safety of workers and customers. Industry groups estimate inventory shrink costs companies more than $100 billion, with external theft contributing about 37% of that figure.
