Latest 'deadline' looms in Man Utd takeover saga

LONDON, June 9 (Reuters) - Manchester United fans can be forgiven if they refrain from eagerly checking the news on Friday as the latest "deadline" looms in the meandering seven-month saga of the club's sale that is beginning to resemble the final series of TV's Succession. That comes two months after a "third and final offer" was said to have been tabled. Media reports in the UK suggested that the Glazers are seeking six billion pounds ($7.5 billion), which would be a world record for any sports club or franchise, but that neither bid is that high. Further bids followed, up to the Qatari's earlier this week, which is said to include clearing nearly a billion pounds of club debt and a commitment to a major redevelopment of Old Trafford. New York CNN —The Washington Post is not for sale, spokespeople for the newspaper and its owner Jeff Bezos told CNN on Monday. They denied a New York Post report, which cited unnamed sources, suggesting the billionaire could shed the newspaper to help fund a potential purchase of the Washington Commanders NFL team. Bezos visited the Post newsroom last week, meeting with staff and sitting in on editorial meetings. A source close to the situation said Bezos told the paper’s senior staff in private meetings that he had no plans to sell the paper. The Amazon (AMZN) founder, along with Jay-Z, is in talks on a potential joint bid on the Commanders, CNN previously reported.
Silver’s powerful statement fortified the NBA’s place as the “progressive” sports league and set in motion the age of athlete activism. To be fair, Washington Commanders fans will benefit if Snyder sells the team and someone less buffoonish and cruel (and incredibly shady) buys it. The NFL will also benefit if Snyder sells the team, as will the employees who alleged they have long suffered under his leadership. Heck, the world will benefit if Snyder sells the team, if just not to have to hear about him anymore. But let there be no doubt about it: If Snyder sells the team, no one on earth will benefit more than Daniel Snyder.
Jeff Bezos may be interested in buying the NFL's Washington Commanders, according to multiple reports. But the team isn't officially for sale and Bezos has been linked to four NFL teams since 2018. The Amazon founder is "looking into buying the Washington Commanders," with music mogul Jay-Z potentially joining Bezos as an investor, a person close to Bezos told People on Thursday. The Commanders are worth $5.6 billion, according to an estimate by Forbes from August, making the team the 6th-most valuable NFL franchise. For Jay-Z, team ownership would be nothing new: the hip-hop star was a part-owner of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets, though he sold his stake in 2013.
Brian Kemp said calls to change the Atlanta Braves' name are "woke cancel culture." The White House said Monday that it's "important" to talk about the offensive team name. Native American activists have been fighting to change sports mascots and team names for decades. Many Native American leaders and groups have said they find the action offensive. According to the Ferris State University Jim Crow Museum, team mascots, phrases, and other traditions that reference Native Americans reinforce harmful stereotypes to non-Native people.
