Verizon misses quarterly revenue estimates on slow phone upgrades
  + stars: | 2024-07-22 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Verizon Communications missed quarterly revenue estimates on Monday due to slow phone upgrades in the United States, taking the shine off strong growth in wireless subscribers and sending shares of the telecom firm down 3.4% before the bell. Verizon reported second-quarter revenue of $32.8 billion, compared with analysts' average estimate of $33.06 billion, according to LSEG data. Verizon said it added 148,000 net monthly bill-paying wireless phone subscribers from April to June, above analysts' average estimate of 127,870 additions, according to Visible Alpha. It even raised the price of some older plans in March to prompt customers to switch to the new plans. The company's consumer business reported net losses of 8,000 wireless retail postpaid phone subscribers in the latest quarter, compared with 136,000 losses a year earlier.

The NBA is close to a series of rights deals that will generate an astonishing $76 billion over 11 years for the sports league. AdvertisementIf you like watching basketball, this will likely mean some change: Right now, national NBA rights are split between Disney's ESPN/ABC and Warner Bros Discovery's TNT; in the future, those will likely be split between Disney, Amazon, and Comcast, which intends to show some games on NBC and some on its Peacock streaming service. So you may need to sign up for some new streamers (just like NFL fans have had to do). This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.

REUTERS/Alyssa Pointer/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Nov 14 (Reuters) - A New York trial judge has narrowed Warner Bros Discovery's lawsuit against Paramount Global (PARA.O) over the rights to stream "South Park," the animated comedy featuring foul-mouthed children. She also dismissed a claim that Paramount failed to act in good faith, because that claim duplicated Warner's breach of contract claim. Warner sued in February, saying Paramount breached the agreement by providing only 14 new episodes, and diverted other new "South Park" content to its Paramount+ streaming service under a $900 million agreement with Parker and Stone. "South Park" was launched in August 1997 on Comedy Central, owned by Paramount. The case is WarnerMedia Direct LLC v Paramount Global et al, New York State Supreme Court, New York County, No.

REUTERS/Mike Blake/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 23 (Reuters) - Signups for Netflix (NFLX.O) in the United States remain elevated despite a fall from June's record high after the video-streaming pioneer's crackdown on shared passwords came into effect in May, according to data from research firm Antenna. Netflix had said last year it was going to limit account-sharing and was testing various approaches in some markets. This has led analysts to expect that about 50 million users will ultimately create their own accounts. Aug 3 (Reuters) - Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O) warned Thursday that uncertainty over the dual strikes by Hollywood writers and actors could impact the timing of its film slate and its ability to produce and deliver content. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents Warner Bros Discovery and the other major studios in negotiations, asked to meet on Friday with the writers' guild to discuss the possibility of resuming talks. Hollywood actors authorize strike as writers still out

LOS ANGELES, June 5 (Reuters) - Hollywood's actors union voted to authorize a strike if contract talks break down, turning up the heat on major film and television studios already grappling with a monthlong work stoppage by writers. No new negotiations are scheduled with the striking Writers Guild of America (WGA), which represents 11,500 film and TV writers. A strike by actors would lead to a broader shutdown across Hollywood and increase pressure on studios that need programming to feed their streaming services and the fall TV broadcast schedule. In the negotiations, actors are seeking higher pay and safeguards against unauthorized use of their images through artificial intelligence. SAG-AFTRA leaders said the industry had changed dramatically with the rise of streaming television and the emergence of new technology such as generative AI.

Feb 24 (Reuters) - Warner Bros Discovery's (WBD.O) shares fell on Friday as Wall Street sees more pain for the media giant that posted more than $2 billion in fourth-quarter losses and cut annual profit forecast as ad market weakness persists. The uncertainty of an ad market recovery in the current market condition, with a potential recession looming, is hounding large media and tech firms such as Paramount Global (PARA.O) and Google-parent Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) alike. "The biggest unknown continues to be in the ad sales environment," Gunnar Wiedenfels, chief financial officer of Warner Bros Discovery said. This implies a range of $11 billion to $11.5 billion, below its previous target of $12 billion. The company reported a wider-than-expected loss of 86 cents per share in the quarter due to restructuring charges related to its merger joining Discovery Inc and AT&T (T.N) spin-off Warner Media.
Feb 23 (Reuters) - Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O) Inc on Thursday posted a $2.1 billion loss in its fourth quarter, reflecting ongoing charges related to the restructuring of the merged media companies. Warner Bros Discovery reported a loss of 86 cents per share, versus expectations of a 21-cent-per-share loss. Warner Bros Discovery said the months-long merger-related restructuring, which resulted in thousands of layoffs and canceled film and television projects, is complete. Warner Bros Discovery also said it has paid down $7 billion in debt since April. Like other media companies, Warner Bros Discovery has yet to turn a profit on its HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming services, though the company has reduced losses from them.
Auto ads, usually among the most popular during the Super Bowl, were mostly absent this year in another sign of reduced spending by automakers grappling with a tough economy and shrinking consumer wallets. Data from research firm Edo showed that Warner Bros Discovery's (WBD.O) 45-second "The Flash" trailer with two Batmans - Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck - was 24 times more effective than the median Super Bowl LVII ad. The Super Bowl is one of the most lucrative hours for advertisers hoping to grab the attention of over a 100 million people watching the game. On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs secured a dramatic 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles to claim their second Super Bowl victory in four years. The average cost of a 30-second Super Bowl spot this year was about $7 million, an 84% surge from ten years ago, data from Statista showed.
Feb 9 (Reuters) - Over 100 puppies from around the United States and Caribbean have suited up for the 19th annual Puppy Bowl that will air opposite of the Super Bowl on Sunday. This year Warner Bros Discovery's (WBD.O) the Animal Planet network worked with 67 shelters from 34 states and the Caribbean island of Dominica. “They've got Tom Brady, we've got Tom Barky, they've got Jalen Hurts, we got Taillon Hurts. And of course they have Josh Allen, we have Josh Allen Hounds,” said Schachner. The Puppy Bowl will be simulcast across Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, TBS, Discovery+ and HBO Max beginning at 2 p.m.
Jan 31 (Reuters) - Warner Bros Discovery Inc (WBD.O) has reached deals with streaming services Roku Inc (ROKU.O) and Fox Corp's (FOXA.O) Tubi to license 2,000 hours of movies and TV series, as it becomes the latest media company to embrace free, ad-supported streaming TV. The streamers announced Tuesday they plan to use the content to launch Warner Bros-branded free, ad-supported TV (or FAST) channels. For the first nine months of 2022, Warner Bros Discovery's streaming business, which includes HBO Max, lost $1.38 billion. The studio is seeking to capitalize on a growing segment of the streaming universe, which industry executives see as complementing subscription streaming services. AMC Networks Inc (AMCX.O), Comcast Corp's (CMCSA.O) NBCUniversal and the National Hockey League have launched FAST channels over the last year.
