On Wednesday night, inside a cavernous event space on the Lower East Side, at the annual gala for the public art organization Creative Time, the actor Jeremy Strong said the news that striking actors and Hollywood studios had reached a tentative deal, “went around the room like wildfire.”“I just think it’s great news for the lights to be turned back on for everybody,” Mr. Strong said. “It means we can all get back to work,” said Julianne Moore, who added, “I miss my community. I miss getting up, and I’m just thinking about things, talking about things, working with other creative people.”“I miss, like, making something,” said Michelle Williams. Nearly 500 people attended the event. The crowd of actors, designers and art world fixtures, included the curator Antwaun Sargent, the designer and actor Waris Ahluwalia, the artist Taryn Simon, and Anne Pasternak, the director of the Brooklyn Museum, who was previously the president and artistic director of Creative Time.

CNN —Police in India say they have arrested alleged Sikh separatist leader Amritpal Singh, bringing to an end a massive months-long manhunt. The news was announced in a tweet on Punjab Police India’s official Twitter account. Singh is a leading ideologue within the Waris De Punjab group, an outlawed separatist movement that seeks to establish a sovereign state called Khalistan for followers of India’s minority Sikh religion. The manhunt has revived calls for an independent Sikh homeland in India’s Punjab state, stoked fears of violence, and revived painful memories of a bloody insurgency that killed thousands. In March, while police searched for Singh, Indian authorities blocked internet access for about 27 million people in the state of Punjab, one of the country’s most extensive blackouts in recent years.
Top Punjab police officer Sukhchain Gill told Reuters that Singh had set up a militia called Anandpur Khalsa Fauj. Singh has said striving for a separate country, that Sikhs call Khalistan, was not an anti-democratic and should not be taboo. Sikh militants complaining of unfair treatment on the part of the central government began agitating for a separate homeland in the 1970s. Singh had become popular through social media during drawn protests in 2020-21 by thousands of farmers from Punjab, many of them Sikh, against agricultural reforms. Sikh militants were blamed for the 1985 bombing of an Air India Boeing 747 flying from Canada to India in which all 329 people on board were killed.
LAHORE, Pakistan, Feb 11 (Reuters) - A mob in eastern Pakistan stormed a police station on Saturday and lynched a man under custody and accused of blasphemy, police said, in the latest incident of religion-linked violence in the Islamic republic. However, the mob stormed the station, located in the city of Nankana Sahib, took Waris out of the premises, beat him to death and attempted to set his body on fire, Waqas added. Blasphemy is also a crime under Pakistani law, which can carry the death sentence. A number of police officials have been suspended because of their inability to stop the mob, a statement from the police said. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident and ordered an inquiry, the government said.
NEW DELHI, Nov 18 (Reuters) - India on Friday proposed a new data privacy law that will allow companies to transfer some users' data abroad, while giving the federal government powers to exempt state agencies from the law in the interests of national security. The proposed law would be the latest regulation that could impact how tech giants such as Facebook and Google process and transfer data in India's fast-growing digital market. It comes after India in August withdrew a 2019 privacy bill that had alarmed companies by proposing stringent restrictions on cross-border data flows. The latest privacy bill, however, relaxed certain stringent norms on cross-border transfers proposed earlier, with the government saying it could specify countries to which entities managing data can transfer personal data of users. Supratim Chakraborty, a partner specializing in data privacy at law firm Khaitan & Co, said the proposal would bring relief for big technology companies that need to transfer user data abroad where they maintain their servers.

Eileen Waris, principal at Energize Ventures, said that SINAI had cut through a climate space which could be considered as "crowded" by early-stage companies. "I have no doubt they will make it to the next round of funding," she stated.
