Washington CNN —The Biden administration said Friday that it has finalized tariff hikes on certain Chinese-made products that the president first announced in May. The administration’s increases come as Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have clashed over tariffs on the campaign trail. Trump implemented sweeping tariffs on about $300 billion of Chinese-made products when he was in office. “Today’s finalized tariff increases will target the harmful policies and practices of the People’s Republic of China that continue to impact American workers and businesses,” US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said in a press release. Taipei/London CNN —Beijing says it will take “all necessary actions” to protect its rights as US President Joe Biden announced huge tariffs on imports of electric vehicles and other goods from China. “China opposes the unilateral imposition of tariffs which violate (World Trade Organization) rules, and will take all necessary actions to protect its legitimate rights,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters Tuesday in a regular press briefing shortly before the widely anticipated White House announcement. In addition to Chinese EVs, the increase in US tariffs will apply to imports of steel and aluminum, legacy semiconductors, battery components, critical minerals, solar cells, cranes and medical products. The new tariff for solar components will be 50%, while the remainder of the targeted imports will attract tariffs of 25%. That same trade law also requires the effectiveness of such tariff programs to be evaluated every four years, and the Biden administration decision is the result of that study. “China can’t be the only country that produces clean technology for the world we need,” a senior administration official said. A British businessman who disappeared from public view in China in 2018 was sentenced to five years in prison in 2022, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday, in its first public acknowledgment of the case. For several years, the Dutch government has faced pressure from the United States to limit chip-related exports to China. ASML said when the rules were updated that due to “the length and complexity of the regulations, ASML will need to carefully assess any potential implications.”The updated export restrictions would affect between 10% and 15% of the firm’s sales to China, ASML Chief Executive Peter Wennink said during an earnings call in October. China reacted on Tuesday, by calling the US curbs “hegemonic” and “bullying.”These actions will “undermine the global semiconductor landscape,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said.
