An eighth-inning rally capped by sacrifice flies by second baseman Gavin Lux and outfielder Mookie Betts put the Dodgers in front. This title, the eighth in franchise history, can stand beside the Dodgers’ trophy from the pandemic-shortened season in 2020. The precedent feels preposterous until you consider the current Dodgers who will one day join them in the Hall of Fame. “Mark,” he told Freeman, “wants to win really bad.” That desire became clear to Ohtani when he met with the Dodgers. After Freeman launched his grand, Gibsonian walkoff in Game 1 against the Yankees, the Dodgers got the job done.

While Republicans don’t need to win Nevada to flip the Senate, the state could help dictate the size of a GOP majority. Rosen told NBC News before addressing the Culinary Union that voters have a “clear choice” in the Senate race. “I think Sam Brown is just too extreme, and I want to continue being that pragmatic problem solver, that bipartisan senator who gets results for Nevada,” Rosen said. “It’s a massively missed opportunity,” said one Nevada Republican operative who requested anonymity to speak candidly about party strategy. Asked if Harris should distinguish herself more from the president to win Nevada, Rosen said: “The race is about Kamala Harris versus Donald Trump.

In 2022, a 10-year national recovery plan was launched to stop the decline in numbers and improve the size, quality and connectivity of koala habitat in the listed areas. “I often think, ‘Am I sitting here, seeing the last of Queensland koalas filtering through, as I work with them?’”One of three subspecies, Queensland koalas are smaller and grayer than their southern cousins, and are the kind often seen in photos with celebrities and foreign dignitaries. “Aussies would be horrified to know that we are bulldozing koala habitat at the rate that we are,” she said. Review: This ‘House of Bernarda Alba’ Is on Fire
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Matt Wolf | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The ground is breathing fire, we’re told, in “The House of Bernarda Alba,” the Spanish classic by Federico García Lorca that opened Tuesday at the National Theater in London in a ferocious new version by Alice Birch. The show runs through Jan. 6. Directed by Rebecca Frecknall and starring Harriet Walter from “Succession” in the imperious title role, it really is scorching. Lorca’s play about a tough-as-nails matriarch and her five unmarried daughters in 1930s Andalusia is regularly revived in theaters in England, but I’ve never seen an ensemble so fully committed to the play, which races toward its tragic finish with genuinely shocking force. As Frecknall has demonstrated in work including that of Tennessee Williams and the Broadway-bound revival of “Cabaret,” she has a gift for reinvigorating familiar titles as though they were brand new.

The ad, however, was created by an enamel pin company making accessories inspired by horror and cult films. Demonic Pinfestation confirmed by email that it created the graphic to advertise an illustrated lobotomy pin, the central image in the promo circulated online, and shared separate images of the design. U.S. enamel pin business created the faux advertisement for lobotomy to promote its enamel pin product.

CNN —A Picasso masterpiece entitled “Femme à la montre” fetched more than $139 million on Wednesday, becoming the second most valuable work by the artist ever sold at auction. The 1932 oil painting took center-stage at a two-day event at Sotheby’s in New York, at the sale of late philanthropist Emily Fisher Landau’s private collection. She is pictured here in front of Fernand Léger's "Étude pour Les Constructeurs" in her home in Manhattan in 2002. In a statement announcing the sale in September, Julian Dawes, Sotheby’s head of Impressionist & Modern Art for the Americas, said: “Picasso’s ‘Femme à la Montre’ is a masterpiece by every measure. How Does a Best-Selling Author Name Her Characters?
  + stars: | 2023-09-07 | by ( Elisabeth Egan | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Suddenly she knew she wanted to write about him — or a character inspired by him — in her 21st book. The man was “utterly nondescript,” the suspense novelist said in a phone interview. “I could see that his apartment had no softness to it, nothing on the walls,” Jewell explained. “He’s Walter Fair.” She already had a few ideas brewing for the novel that would become her latest best seller, “None of This Is True.” But Walter Fair was, as she put it, “the key that opened the last door” to the rest of the story. A name won’t necessarily serve as a springboard to inspiration, but Jewell always puts a lot of stock in the christening of characters.

Lobotomies used to be a horrific way that doctors tried to treat patients with mental illness. Different doctors performed lobotomies differently, but one of the primary approaches was to drill a hole in the side of the skull to access the brain. Doctors thought that severing certain connections in the brain could help treat mental illness. By the 1950s, lobotomies were on their way out, but not before doctors performed over 40,000 of them in the US alone. A drill, shown on the right, is cranked by hand to help doctors access the patient's brain.

“Having a former vice president contest the president he served for their party’s nomination in contested primaries is like a 234-year flood,” said Joel K. Goldstein, a specialist on the vice presidency at the St. Louis University School of Law. The broken relationship between Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence is itself a historical anomaly, of course. “The reason why no other vice president appears to have run against his president is that he was selected by the president, and there is almost always a personal bond stemming from a sense of loyalty and gratitude,” said Richard Moe, who was the chief of staff to Vice President Walter F. Mondale. In 1800, Vice President Thomas Jefferson challenged President John Adams, defeating the incumbent’s bid for a second term. Adams and Jefferson had run against each other in 1796, with Adams prevailing and Jefferson becoming vice president because he was the runner-up.
