AdvertisementMen far outnumber women as news influencers on social media, per a new Pew Research Center study. That gender skew is showing up again in the latest platform for news: social media. That gender gap stands out for a few reasons:First, there's a much narrower gender divide (51% male and 46% female) among working US journalists, per a 2022 Pew survey. In Pew's analysis, there was a much smaller (and flipped) gender gap in the overall audience for news content on social media among young people. YouTube had the biggest gender gap, while TikTok's was minimalThe gender divide among news influencers was fairly consistent across all platforms in Pew's study.

Norah O’Donnell recently announced that she will be stepping down as anchor of “CBS Evening News” after the election, after five years at the helm. I knew viewers were seeing these stories because Norah was the driving force behind telling them. Like so many watching, I marveled at the incredible athleticism of these young women, as well as at their diversity. Equally exciting was the fact that this was the first Olympics in history where there were as many women as men competing. We’re also in the midst of a campaign that could result in the election of the first woman president, and first woman of color as president.

“CBS Evening News,” one of America’s longest-running newscasts, is getting a significant overhaul, one that will put the role of a singular and towering Walter Cronkite-like evening news anchor in the rearview mirror. Just two days after Norah O’Donnell announced that she would depart the show’s anchor chair this fall, CBS News executives said she would be replaced by John Dickerson, the network’s lead political analyst and the host of an evening CBS News streaming show, and Maurice DuBois, a longtime anchor for the CBS affiliate in New York. Additionally, the network named Lonnie Quinn, a local weatherman and Mr. DuBois’s colleague at WCBS-TV, the first-ever chief weathercaster for “Evening News.” Other veteran CBS journalists, like Jim Axelrod, Steve Hartman and Margaret Brennan, are expected to be regular presences on the show, as will other correspondents. Mr. DuBois and Mr. Quinn will continue in their local roles as well, the network said. In some ways, the program, with dedicated weather segments and a cast of frequently appearing correspondents, may resemble something closer to a morning show, or a local newscast.

Don’t Tell My Friends, But… is a seriesin which we asked Times columnistswhateveryone else is wrong about. On its face, there’s nothing necessarily political about the mantra that the customer is always right. But the idea that the customer is always right also contains a worldview, a kind of market fundamentalism that typifies much of the American right today. The problem starts when our decisions aren’t merely subjective — that is, when questions of truth, moral or factual, are involved. Students today, whose parents often pay fortunes for their education, are treated like valuable customers, not lowly apprentices.

Toby Melville | ReutersFARNBOROUGH, England — Massive airplane orders, hundreds deep in recent years, were absent from this year's biggest air show. One standout was Air Korea's order for up to 50 Boeing wide-body planes, including the 777X, which Boeing is working toward getting certified by regulators. As both manufacturers grapple with production strains, Air Korea CEO Walter Cho quipped during the Boeing order signing: "Whichever comes first will become our flagship, whoever's on time." Boeing has an overall backlog of close to 5,500 planes, while Airbus has more than 8,000 on order. Many airlines from United Airlines to Air India have also stocked up on new jet orders as travel rebounded in the pandemic.

The move allows Warner Bros. to retain some of its NBA broadcasting rights. However, the NBA may not want Warner Bros. as a media rights partner and could reject the company's matching rights, which could lead to a legal tussle.

I love “Seinfeld.” As for the actual comedian Jerry Seinfeld, however it’s…complicated. In most of his activities outside his eponymous classic sitcom (1989-1998), Seinfeld bemuses more than amuses me. This ambivalence only obliquely affects my opinion of “Unfrosted,” Seinfeld’s recently-released feature-length Netflix comedy. Still, I’ve always had the disquieting sense of Seinfeld somehow always Getting Away With Something when he pulls off this suave, impeccably creased act. Richard Leibner, a powerful agent whose firm brokered contracts for many of the biggest names in television news, including Dan Rather, Diane Sawyer, Anderson Cooper, Ed Bradley, Morley Safer and Steve Kroft, died on Tuesday at his home in Manhattan. His son Jonathan said the cause was kidney cancer. Mr. Leibner’s firm, N.S. Bienstock — named for one of its founders, Nathan Bienstock — represented hundreds of anchors, reporters, producers and others in network and local television news. The negotiation that grabbed the biggest headlines was for Mr. Rather, then one of the star correspondents of the CBS News program “60 Minutes.”Between late 1979 and early 1980, Mr. Leibner (pronounced LEEB-ner) parlayed interest in Mr. Rather as the evening anchor from all three network news divisions: ABC News, whose president, Roone Arledge, was trying to raise his third-place division’s profile; NBC News, where the evening anchor John Chancellor was hoping to change to a commentary role; and CBS News, where Walter Cronkite had been the evening anchor since 1962.

I wanted a way to incorporate my maiden name into my kids' names to preserve my family legacy. Our family has also had weekend-long family reunions every two years in hotels across the United States since 1976. In exchange, I gave my daughter two middle names, the first name I originally wanted to name her and my maiden name. The kids will continue the tradition of going to my family reunions and bonding with my extended family. While they may not often use their middle names, they'll understand why mommy was adamant about also passing down her maiden name.

If Biden drops from the presidential race, it would likely lead to a contested convention in August. AdvertisementFor years, Democratic President Joe Biden has been plagued with critiques about his old age and perceived cognitive skills. With no candidate having amassed a majority of the nation's delegates, the Democratic presidential nominee was decided at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where anti-war protesters angrily demonstrated outside. AdvertisementMost of the state delegates at the convention voted for Humphrey, leading him to win the Democratic Party's nomination. Unless Biden stuns the party and suddenly drops out, the current 81-year-old president is on a fast track to obtaining the Democratic presidential nomination.

I hope our study could settle the debate regarding whether we should limit red meat intake for health concerns or not.”Eating certain amounts of red meat has been linked with higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The authors studied 216,695 people who had participated in the Nurses’ Health Study, the Nurses’ Health Study II and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, all of which recruited participants from around 1976 to 1989. Eating the most processed or unprocessed red meat was linked with a 51% and 40% higher risk of type 2 diabetes, respectively. But multiple biological factors could have affected the relationship between red meat and type 2 diabetes, the authors said. “Consistently reported, dairy, legumes and nuts are the best foods with which to replace the red meat,” she added.
