TOKYO — Japan’s government and people cheered the record trophy haul for period drama “Shogun” at the Emmy Awards as yet another win for their history and culture, which are becoming increasingly popular with tourists and international audiences alike. The historical epic set in Imperial Japan claimed 19 awards, the most ever for a single drama season, including best drama and acting awards for leads Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. Another Japanese period piece, “Blue Eye Samurai,” won an Emmy for the best animated program. The Emmys triumph on Sunday reached Japan on a holiday on Monday, but that didn’t stop “Shogun” from becoming a top trending topic online. “The reason why Sanada is fighting alone so diligently is to give back to Japan,” a user named Rui wrote on X.

Glendale, California CNN —Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the “wildest ride in the wilderness,” sits at one edge of Disney World’s Magic Kingdom park, the most visited theme park in the world. “It’s probably the largest expansion ever at Magic Kingdom,” Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World site portfolio executive, said Tuesday during a rare media event previewing new Disney attraction designs and technology at its Walt Disney Imagineering facility in California. Disney’s 10-year investment planThe Magic Kingdom expansion is one part of a $60 billion investment Disney has said it’s planning for its parks, cruises and experiences over the next decade. CNN —An inspiration for Walt Disney’s imagination for the Sleeping Beauty castle, Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle is a go-to tourist destination for around 1.4 million people per year. However, in September, Manow’s two worlds collided as the 34-year-old became the first person to detach from a paraglider mid-air and fly past Neuschwanstein Castle wearing just a wingsuit. The German performed a 328-foot free fall before whistling by the castle, reaching a top speed of 124 mph. As well as taking various practice flights, the skydiver also built a special paragliding harness into his wingsuit to safely release himself. Max Manow flew past Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria in a wingsuit.

Walt Disney’s (DIS.N) chief executive plans to double the Magic Kingdom’s investment in theme parks and other experiences to $60 billion over the course of about 10 years. On the other, Disney’s dwindling cash and the increasing demands for it is cause for concern. One issue is that Disney’s free cash flow has plummeted. No wonder adding theme parks to the list is making shareholders skittish.

Barbie’s a boss but not a business model

NEW YORK, Sept 5 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O) boss David Zaslav is playing too much with Barbie. Mattel (MAT.O), the $8 billion company behind the brand, has increased its market value 20% since late May, growing three times as fast as the S&P 500 Index (.SPX). Lego partnered with Warner Bros in 2014 to produce a movie featuring its renowned plastic bricks. Unlike Disney and its superheroes, Warner Bros doesn’t own the blonde bombshell. Barbie may be this year’s boss, but she and her nostalgic ilk are unlikely to become business models.

AI’s deflationary winds will blow away profits

LONDON, June 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The prevailing expectation for artificial intelligence’s (AI’s) impact on humans is laden with doom. Yet the history of technological innovation suggests humans will see at least one tangible benefit from AI: lower prices for what they consume. One innovation that could give consumers an advantage over companies is AI agents. Streaming services like Netflix (NFLX.O) and Walt Disney’s (DIS.N) Disney+ could also suffer if AI agents take off. Junior lawyers, call centre operators and advertising copywriters, to name but a few, should probably be afraid, very afraid of AI’s looming threat.

So right about here, as the turtles start to move, then you see, O.K., there’s a little bit of dance starting to happen. And I took a page out of Walt Disney’s playbook, and I worked with the Alvin Ailey Company. He had worked with the Ballet Russe Company when he created ‘Fantasia.’ And I thought that was such a brilliant idea. And then we found all these sea creatures that actually lent themselves to dance naturally. These are all real sea creatures.

Now the cable cowboy’s Liberty Media (FWONA.O) empire is trotting out its trademark financial razzle-dazzle to try and wring additional value out of its assets. Malone, Liberty Media’s chairman, is as renowned for his dizzying array of specialized equity issues, spinoffs and splits as he is for the telecom and entertainment companies that have been subjected to the intricate machinations. It excludes broadcaster Discovery, spun off from Liberty Media in 2005, and international broadband provider Liberty Global (LBTYA.O), hived off a year earlier. A more logical starting point would be 2001, when Malone carved Liberty Media out of telecom giant AT&T (T.N). Likewise, Liberty Media’s accompanying shakeup of its tracking stocks stands to further spotlight the value of Formula One.

Disney’s Theme Parks Are Sore Spot for Investors, Too

Walt Disney’s theme-parks division, which includes Magic Kingdom in Florida, has posted record quarterly profits this year. Bob Chapek took heat over losses at Walt Disney Co.’s streaming business. But cracks were also showing at Disney’s crown jewel theme-parks division when Mr. Chapek lost his job as chief executive last week. Investors were spooked by shrinking margins at the parks division amid a softening economy, raising concerns about how long the parks can continue to produce the profits needed to help subsidize losses in streaming, now more than $8 billion since Disney’s flagship Disney+ service launched in late 2019.
