New research based on the findings, published in several papers Wednesday in Nature and its sister journals, represents a “leap in understanding of the human body,” according to the Human Cell Atlas consortium. Regev compared scientific knowledge of cell biology before the Human Cell Atlas initiative with a “15th century map.”“Now, years later, the resolution of the map is a lot higher,” she said. The cell atlas aims to fill in a missing link between genes, diseases and treatment therapies. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Human Cell Atlas community used the available data to reveal that the nose, eyes and mouth were most vulnerable to infection. “It was only clear through the Human Cell Atlas data that those cells were … entry points before the virus continued into the internal organs.

A Wisconsin man who faked his own death and left his family three months ago after communicating with a woman in Uzbekistan has been in regular contact with the authorities and sent them a video this month, saying he was “safe” and “secure.”Mark A. Podoll, the Green Lake County sheriff, played the video of the man, Ryan Borgwardt, of Watertown, Wis., at a news conference on Thursday. In the 24-second clip, Mr. Borgwardt is seen recording himself in what looks like a spartan apartment with white walls and a gray door. “Good evening, it’s Ryan Borgwardt,” he says in a quiet voice. I am safe, secure, no problem. I hope this works.”Sheriff Podoll said the authorities did not know exactly where Mr. Borgwardt was, but knew it was someplace in Eastern Europe.

Four students were arrested on felony charges after buildings at the University of Rochester in New York were defaced with "wanted" posters targeting several Jewish faculty members, officials said. The four students were charged with felony criminal mischief and a fifth is being investigated, Quchee Collins, the university public safety chief, said in a news release Tuesday. "The posters identifying faculty, staff, and board members have instilled credible fear among those depicted, their families, and other members of our Jewish community," Mangelsdorf said in a message to the community. The university Department of Public Safety was made aware of the posters last week and immediately began removing them. The posters named certain university staff members and professors for alleged war crimes related to the conflict in Gaza, NBC affiliate WHEC of Rochester reported.

Giraffe populations are declining at such an alarming rate — from habitat loss, poaching, urbanization and climate change-fueled drought — that US wildlife officials announced a proposal on Wednesday to help protect several of the species. The US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed listing many giraffe species as either endangered or threatened. It’s the first time the long-necked mammals, native to Africa, would receive federal protections under the Endangered Species Act. Declaring a species “endangered” is the most severe level of threat under the law, indicating the species is at immediate risk of extinction. The US has become a significant market for giraffe parts and products, importing nearly 40,000 for at least a decade-long period, a 2018 report showed.

BYBLOS, Lebanon — The anguish in Lebanese archaeologist Nader Siklaoui’s voice is clear as he films Israeli missiles slamming down near ancient Roman columns he has spent much of his life protecting. But the conflict is also taking a devastating toll on Lebanon’s unique and ancient heritage, with airstrikes wiping out centuries-old villages and endangering fragile, millenia-old archaeological sites, like the celebrated Roman ruins of Baalbek, a United Nations world heritage site. First responders evacuate an injured person following an Israeli airstrike near Tyre, Lebanon, on Oct. 30. What can we do?” said Siklaoui, who oversees heritage sites in southern Lebanon, speaking to NBC News at the national museum in the capital Beirut. Israel’s military says it only targets Hezbollah, but accuses the group of embedding itself in and near civilian infrastructure, including heritage sites.

How different a commander in chief will Trump be?

On the face of it, there are sizable differences in foreign policy between Trump and President Joe Biden. In October, the Biden administration again helped to intercept a barrage of around 200 Iranian ballistic missiles, which also caused minimal damage to targets in Israel. Bringing US troops homeIn 2020, the Trump administration signed a US withdrawal agreement from Afghanistan with the Taliban. But after McMaster was pushed out of office in 2018, the Trump administration negotiated with the Taliban the withdrawal agreement of all US forces from Afghanistan. Nonetheless, the incoming Trump administration seems intent on resurrecting Schedule F, an executive order issued in the last months of the first Trump term.

Beneath the snowy slopes lay a prehistoric surprise: an ecosystem that predates the dinosaurs, revealed by melting snow before being stumbled upon by a hiker in the Italian Alps. Intrigued, she snapped photos and shared them with her friend, Elio Della Ferrera, a nature photographer. Della Ferrera then contacted Dal Sasso, at the museum in Milan, to learn more about the discovery. These environmental shifts contributed to the extinction of many species, which we may now encounter as fossils on a fortunate hike. “The past has much to teach us about what we risk doing to the world today,” the researchers warned.

Last week, Israeli soccer fans were attacked in the streets, Palestinian flags ripped off walls and antisemitic slurs yelled during riots. But the timeline of how tensions ignited in Amsterdam is different depending on which community you ask. “It’s really so, so manipulative… It only makes everything worse,” Jaïr Stranders, a local theater director and a board member of the Liberal Jewish Community of Amsterdam told CNN. Major tech companies have cracked down on fully remote work, including Amazon, Google, and Meta. Get into the office and soak up the knowledge within its walls, Google's former CEO says. Studies have also suggested that being fully remote decreases workers' productivity. Companies, including Amazon, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs, have ditched their remote work policies for full return-to-office mandates, with some even threatening to track performance or terminate those who don't comply. However, Google assured workers in October that it would not follow Amazon's expectations for staff to come into the office five days a week.

London CNN —King Charles III has marked his 76th birthday on Thursday by opening two food distribution hubs, as part of his Coronation Food Project that he launched a year ago in the hopes of bridging the gap between food poverty and food waste. Charles visited one of the new hubs in south London, which is hosting a “surplus food festival” where meals will be made using food that might otherwise have gone to waste. Since it was launched, the food project has worked with local charities FareShare and the Felix Project, and saved 940 tons of surplus food - the equivalent of 2.2 million meals. Charles speaks with staff at the new distribution center, designed to save and circulate surplus food and to support communities in need. King Charles treats his actual birthday in November like a normal working day, but the bonus of being the monarch means that he actually gets two.

Nadhmi al-Nasr, the long-time chief executive of the $500 billion NEOM mega-project at the heart of Saudi Arabia’s drive to diversify away from oil, has departed, NEOM said on Tuesday without giving a reason. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has poured hundreds of billions of dollars into development projects through the kingdom’s PIF sovereign wealth fund. Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter, is still heavily reliant on hydrocarbon revenues, and low oil prices and production have hit state coffers. He has been the head of the PIF’s Local Real Estate Division since 2018 and has a deep understanding of NEOM and its projects, NEOM said. Builders, meanwhile, are luring buyers with some perks but are barely budging on prices. That's partly because these companies have another place to turn: the rental market. Opportunistic investors — mostly small and midsize players, who own the vast majority of single-family rentals in the country — are happy to oblige. Builders have also started developing entire communities of single-family homes to be rented out rather than sold, a strategy known as build-for-rent. Their embrace of the rental market says more about the obstacles for buyers than for builders.
