Silicon anodes vs. solid-state batteriesAnalysts say silicon anodes theoretically offer 10 times the energy density as graphite, which are commonly used in battery anodes today. Silicon anodes, for example, are known to swell significantly during charging, which reduces the battery's longevity. Especially in the West, advances in the area of silicon anodes [are] seen as strategic opportunity to catch up with China. Nonetheless, analysts remain skeptical about when solid-state batteries will actually make it to market. "However, there are significant technical challenges going to 100% silicon anode such as silicon expansion affecting the longevity of the batteries and currently there are several routes to produce silicon anodes," he added.

Public electric vehicle charging infrastructure remains "critical" in driving further EV adoption, said analysts at investment bank TD Cowen. "A ubiquitous and reliable network of public EV charging infrastructure remains critical in driving further adoption to curtail CO2 emissions from the transportation sector," said TD Cowen. Here are some areas that will take up the bulk of that opportunity, as well as stocks that could benefit, according to TD Cowen. Passenger EV charging hardware The bank estimates that $91 billion in investment is required for publicly available U.S. EV charging hardware and installations for passenger vehicles, and another $14 billion for commercial vehicles by 2030. "Ultimately, we think the next wave of EV charging companies will have a keen focus on the fleet /medium/heavy-duty sector," it said.

A Renault wallbox charging station is used by a Renault Captur hybrid car at a dealership in Les Sorinieres, near Nantes, France, October 23, 2020. Chinese EV makers, including BYD (002594.SZ), Nio (9866.HK) and Xpeng (9868.HK) are all targeting Europe's EV market, where sales soared nearly 55% to about 820,000 vehicles in the first seven months of 2023, making up about 13% of all car sales. The arrival of Chinese EV makers in Europe has raised concerns they will undercut local carmakers and dominate EV sales. Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) will present its CLA compact class and BMW (BMWG.DE) its Neue Klasse, both of which target higher range and efficiency, while halving production costs. Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) CEO Oliver Blume told reporters that through its partnerships in China, the carmaker aims to cut battery cell costs by 50%.

A Renault wallbox charging station is used by a Renault Captur hybrid car at a dealership in Les Sorinieres, near Nantes, France, October 23, 2020. About 41% of exhibitors at this year's event are headquartered in Asia, with the number of Chinese companies having more than doubled, including players across batteries and EV production such as BYD, CATL and XPeng. "Europe needs to stop being naive from a macroeconomic point of view in the face of China," Gilles Le Borgne, Renault's (RENA.PA) engineering head, told journalists on Sunday, pointing to the country's control of the full battery supply chain. Chinese and German players, including top German carmakers and suppliers and China's LeapMotors and Horizon Robotics, will also speak at a Chinese EV conference set for Wednesday and Thursday for the first time outside China as part of the IAA. Electric vehicle sales jumped 60.6%, continuing a rise buoyed by subsidies in a number of European Union countries. Full EVs accounted for 13.6% of all new car sales, up from under 10% in July 2022. Diesel vehicles, which alone comprised more than 50% of new car sales as recently as 2015, accounted for just over 14% of sales in July. Europe's top car seller Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) posted a 17.9% increase in sales in July, the ACEA said, while BMW (BMWG.DE) and Renault (RENA.PA) saw sales rise 22.5% and 16.9% respectively. But Stellantis (STLAM.MI), which has struggled with logistics problems and car deliveries in Europe, posted a 6.1% drop in sales in July.

Spain's startup scene has evaded some of the collapse in VC funding that has rocked Europe in 2023. Smaller check sizes and a lack of "ego" has somewhat protected the ecosystem, investors say. Smaller valuations, check sizes, and a distinct lack of ego helped Spain's startup scene evade some of the shocking collapse in venture capital funding that has rocked Europe so far this year. Smaller rounds give Spain's startups an edge in the downturnWhat correction was felt was eased by the fact there is less "ego" in Spain's ecosystem, according to Max Bray, an investor at early-stage firm K Fund. As well as the birth of local growth funds, investors see corporations playing a role in closing the funding gap.

Bank of America doubled down on its buy rating for electric vehicle charging company Wallbox and expects its shares to rise by more than 60% over the next 12 months to $5.5 a share. The Barcelona-based company manufactures home electric vehicle chargers and public charging systems for the North American and European markets. The stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange and has declined by 70% over the past year. For example, the bank added that growth has slowed due to slower adoption of electric cars amid supply chain disruption. Bank of America estimates that Wallbox has begun manufacturing these units and will benefit from U.S. subsidies in the Inflation Reduction Act.
Here are three that made the list: Tesla: The favorite Kallo called electric vehicle maker Tesla his favorite pick in the sector. TSLA YTD mountain Tesla Rivian: The long-term play Competitor Rivian , meanwhile, is a smart long-term play, Kallo said. On the other hand, he lowered his price target and estimates for 2024 deliveries to reflect a more conservative ramp-up. RIVN YTD mountain Rivian Wallbox: The non-vehicle pick Wallbox , which makes charging stations and technology, is another stock Kallo deems worth holding. That $11 price target would still be 32.6% lower than where the stock ended 2021.
The biggest makers and network operators of EV charging stations include Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), ChargePoint Holdings Inc (CHPT.N), EVgo Inc (EVGO.O) and Electrify America. In Arizona, the state's Department of Transportation is leading efforts to build charging stations, and expects $76.5 million in federal charging funds over the next five years. The first, $1.25 billion round of the Biden buildout is focused squarely on the highway fast chargers, with later rounds including slower chargers for overnight charging, for instance. Its South Korean charger manufacturer, SK Signet Inc (260870.KN), is planning to open a Texas factory to produce up to 10,000 direct-current fast chargers annually by 2026. Shares of EVgo jumped nearly 10% on Feb. 15, when the U.S. government announced the new rules for chargers.
The continued adoption of electric vehicles in the United States will create more winners for investors than just automakers, according to UBS. We see EV adoption and the build out of the charging network as one of the pillars of this theme," the note said. The automaker has its own charging network, but recently agreed to make at least 7,500 of its chargers compatible with other EVs by the end of 2024. There are also companies that specialize in chargers that could benefit from the next wave of EV adoption, including ChargePoint and Blink Charging . The firm has buy ratings on Sempra and Exelon and said they have "high EV adoption."

ABB takes valid detour around hairy IPO markets
  + stars: | 2022-11-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The deal, which values ABB E-mobility’s equity at 2.5 billion Swiss francs, is a halfway house after original plans for an initial public offering were delayed by volatile markets. The deal values the unit at around 3 times 2023 sales, assuming far-from-impossible 50% revenue growth this year and next. The charging division gets long-term investors, a beefed-up board and greater independence, making an IPO easier when markets recover. ABB meanwhile continues to streamline its operations to focus on the core fast-growing areas of electrification and automation. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
The Inflation Reduction Act, recent share underperformance and an attractive valuation all make Wallbox a buy, Bank of America said Thursday. Analyst Alexander Virgo upgraded the Barcelona-based maker of home electric vehicle chargers to buy from neutral. "With the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act in the US, Wallbox is now well positioned to benefit from the US charging infrastructure expansion," Virgo wrote. Earlier this year, President Joe Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act. Virgo said Wallbox is lagging its EV charging peers by more than 10%, adding that the stock trades at an enterprise value-to-sales multiple of 1.4.

Spanish startups lured a record $4.1 billion from investors in 2021, according to PitchBook. The government hopes its new Startup Law will help birth an array of new unicorns. In 2016, Lucas Carné sold his fashion marketplace startup Privalia for around 500 million euros (around $495 million) in a landmark deal for the Spanish tech ecosystem. Privalia's sale to its enlarged French counterpart Ventee-Privee – since rebranded as VeePee – illustrated just how far the Spanish startup scene had changed in the space of 10 years. Spanish startups secured a record $4.1 billion in 2021 – more than double that of 2020 –, according to PitchBook data.
