At stake is one of the top two spots in the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) , whose June rebalance is based on market cap values as of Friday's close. The market caps of Microsoft, Apple and Nvidia were all within $100 billion of each other as of Thursday's close, according to a FactSet calculation. This type of big shift in an index fund is unusual, but not unprecedented. The fund tracks an index from S & P Dow Jones Indices that uses weighting caps to keep the index in bounds. Depending on how many shares of Nvidia are required, it might cause a short-term spike in the name," Bajaj said.

watch nowDespite a sluggish start to the year, a record number of product launches and a red-hot November have put 2023 back on pace to be a solid year for ETFs. Roughly $1 trillion has gone into money market funds this year, but some are questioning whether the solid year-end stock rally will attract some of those flows back into equities. "You saw that enormous cash pileup going into money markets, and ETF flows were muted. "We talked about the money market funds," he said. He pointed to strong inflows into high-yield ETFs such as the iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) and SPDR Bloomberg High Yield Bond ETF (JNK) and SPDR Bloomberg Short Term High Yield Bond ETF (SJNK) — along with dividend ETFs such as the Pacer U.S. Cash Cows 100 ETF (COWZ).

Options strategists believe market gyrations may stay subdued for some time - potentially smoothing the way for further gains in equities. The S&P 500 is up 19% year-to-date, following a 9% gain in November - its best monthly performance since July 2022. Since the VIX tends to move inversely to stocks, market participants watch it closely as an indicator of investor sentiment and positioning. Among the factors closely watched by market participants are the funds that take their signals from market volatility, selling when volatility picks up and buying when it subsides. History also shows that once volatility expectations become subdued, they can linger at low levels for a while.

The list of top-performing exchange-traded funds since Sept. 19 — the day before the Federal Reserve released new projections that showed fewer rate cuts in 2024 — is dominated by leveraged and leveraged inverse products. The performance and increased interest shows that the inverse funds are doing their jobs, but there are important caveats for investors to know. The universe of inverse and leveraged inverse funds has grown widely, including sector-specific funds and even some single-stock products. Of course, the leveraged inverse funds can suffer massive losses if the market rebounds. Ullal also pointed out that some inverse products are technically exchange traded notes, not ETFs, which can introduce some credit risk in a trade.

The JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI) attracted a surge of cash last year with its outperformance and yield above 10%, showing that funds that combined equity exposure with income-generating options strategies could find a foothold with investors. QYLG YTD mountain The QYLG ETF has been one of the top equity income ETFs so far this year. JEPI's sister fund, JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPQ) , is also a top performer with a return of more than 22% year to date. Another income-focused fund that is having a big year is the YieldMax TSLA Option Income Strategy ETF (TSLY) , which writes calls on the popular electric vehicle stock. Several ETF issuers are now launching similar products to JPMorgan's popular income fund, giving investors more options to find yield without leaving the equity market.
