Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines, 43, was arrested at the county courthouse in Whitesburg Thursday on suspicion of fatally shooting District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, in Mullins’ chambers. The hearing itself will be conducted by a judge in a Carter County courthouse, about 100 miles from the crime scene, according to court officials, with the Letcher County courthouse having been closed for days because of the killing. Stines’ job made him responsible for security at county courthouses, including the personal security of judges, according to the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association. “This community is small in nature, and we’re all shook,” Kentucky State Police Trooper Matt Gayheart said at a Thursday evening news conference. “The Letcher County Courthouse is one of the last that you can walk into without a metal detector or security at the front door,” said Matt Butler, commonwealth’s attorney for Letcher County, in a video statement Friday. Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines has been arrested Thursday in connection with the fatal shooting of a district judge inside a courthouse, Kentucky State Police (KSP) said. “I know Kentucky State Police are investigating it, and I feel confident that they will hopefully provide some answers on why. In remembrance of Mullins, flags at all Kentucky Court of Justice facilities will be lowered to half-staff through Monday.

Nearly 78% of foreign-born men were in the labor force, compared to about 66% of native-born men. Foreign-born men had weekly earnings of $1,051, compared to $1,238 for native-born men, while foreign-born women had weekly earnings of $899, compared to $1,025 for their native-born counterparts. The foreign born were more likely to work in service, construction and maintenance jobs, among other occupations, which often pay less. Some 3.6% of the foreign born were unemployed last year – the same share as the native born. Just over 15% of foreign-born workers were White, and nearly 11% were Black.

Even today, it looks “like it’s from another planet,” said Palm Springs Art Museum CEO Adam Lerner. After years of negotiations and fine-tuning the logistics, the Foundation donated Aluminaire House to the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2020, which subsequently raised $2.6 million to cover the cost of its rebuilding and future care. An estimated 242,000 jobs were added last month, higher than the forecast of 200,000 and more than double the revised 119,000 added in January. The job growth was fairly broad-based, with industries such as leisure and hospitality, services, and financial activities seeing some of the larger gains. Pay growth for “job stayers” slowed to 7.2% in February, the slowest pace seen during the past 12 months. “We’re seeing robust hiring, which is good for the economy and workers, but pay growth is still quite elevated.
